Obituary of Richard I. Sluzinski ~ 2009
Transcribed by Joseph Cook
Richard I. Sluzinski, age 82 died at his (Lucas Hill Farm), in Marion, North Carolina February 21, 2009 after a short illness. He was born in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, the youngest of 13 children of Joseph and Sophia Sluzinski and is survived by his wife Nancy and distant relatives.
He served in the Army in World War II and returned home to begin farming, working with two generations of Windsor Locks children. A 1991 comment by Roger Eddy stated “. . . Scores and scores of times over the past 35 years I have watched Richie Sluzinski moving at dawn across his vast inland of sweet corn, the largest unfenced field left in Connecticut, directing his legions of youthful pickers like a Roman General. The young boys and girls who worked for him and his wife will never forget the experience.’’ Richard and Nancy “retired” to North Carolina in 1995 and once again grew “Peaches and Cream” corn to the delight of the community. He will also be remembered for the numerous farm trips he shared with the Head Start children over the years.
A service will be held at the Westmoreland Funeral Home on February 26, 2009 at 9:00 o’clock AM with Father Frank Seabo officiating.
