Obituary of Garland Wesley Smith ~ 2008

Mr. Garland Wesley Smith, age 101, slipped away peacefully into the arms of his Savior, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Autumn Care of Marion. A native of McDowell County, Mr. Smith was born March 21, 1907 and was a son of the late James Robert Smith and Katherine Hunter Smith. He was a member of Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Smith retired from Drexel Heritage Furnishings after which he was employed by Pleasant Gardens Machine Shop for several years. His life will stand as a testament to his Christianity. He will be sorely missed by his family, his church family and his family of caregivers at Autumn Care. Preceding Mr. Smith in death was his wife of 75 years, Julia Davis Smith, a special daughter Lea Sartain, four brothers, Roy, Clyde, Clarence and Cecil and a sister Edna Davis.
Left to cherish Mr. Smith’s memory are four children: Donald W. Smith, Jeanette Queen, Lila Mae Boone and Lucille Coates, all of Marion; brother James E. Smith of Marion; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Thursday August 28, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Revs. Harold Webb and Milton Hollifield officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Liberty Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Freewill Baptist Church 4089 Hwy 70 West Marion, N. C. 28752. An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.
