Mildred Josephine “Jo” Smith, 86, of Old Fort passed away Monday September 29, 2008 at Mountain Ridge Wellness Center in Black Mountain. She was born in Buncombe County to the late Millard “Pink” Painter and Allie Laughter Painter. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Olan Smith; 2 sisters, Georgia Dalton Smith & Colleen Gilliand; 3 sisters-in-law, Katheryn Painter, Beulah Sowers, & Mae Lytle.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Carolyn Bradley (Michael), Judy Watring (Michael), 1 son Johnny Smith (Lynn) all of Old Fort; 3 brothers, Milbern Painter (Truby) of Old Fort, Malcom Painter of Glenwood, Donald Painter of Marietta, GA; 4 sisters, Movieleen Ledford (Carroll) of Glenwood, Aleen England, Rita Mills (Jim), Betty Mills (Haskell) all of Marion; 7 grandchildren, Melissa Bradley (Jeff), Cindy Bradley, Jason Watring (Brandy), Brandon Smith (Kristy), Bryan Smith; 5 great grandchildren, Dylan Watring, Brianna Watring, Brandon Cox, Sierra Cox, Casey Cox; a special friend Roger Mulkey.
Services will be held Wednesday October 1, 2008 at 3:00 pm at Kirksey Funeral Chapel in Old Fort with Rev. Marty Connor & Rev. Kenny Shultz officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 pm prior to the service. Burial will be in Cherry Springs Memorial Park. Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort is assisting the family.
