Luke Phillip Boone, age 71, surrounded by his family and friends, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday January 24, 2009.  Phillip was born in McDowell County on December 19, 1937 to the late Frank Edward and Tuie Roxanne Bradburn Boone.  Phillip retired from Harris Teeter and later from J.B.’s Galaxy.  His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Phillip performed as a quartet member with The Singing Deacons for many years.

Mr. Boone leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Mary Rumfelt Boone of the home; three children: Rebecca B. Hall and her husband Tommy of Marion, Phillip David Boone and wife Deborah of Glenwood and Rev. Jeff Boone and wife Kim of Nebo; four sisters: Virginia Carter White, Ruth Brown Peacock, Judy Curry and Wilma Davis; three brothers: Charles, Danny and Roger Boone; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday January 27, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Eastside Baptist Church with the Revs. Robbie Waddle and Eric Grindstaff officiating.  The family received friends from 2:00-3:00 PM one hour prior to the service at the church.  Interment was in McDowell Memorial Park.  Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.  An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.

Blankenship, Belle Walker (2009)

Mrs. Belle Walker Blankenship, age 90 of Dysartsville passed away Friday January 30, 2009 at Cleveland Pines Nursing Home in Shelby, NC.  A native of McDowell County, Belle was born May 12, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Furman Duck Walker and Sarah Pyatt Walker.  She was the oldest member of Dysartsville Baptist Church.  She loved to quilt and was very talented in this area.  Her husband Eliga Blankenship and a son Davie Hoyle Blankenship preceded her in death.

Surviving Mrs. Blankenship are three children: Lorene Buchanan of Dysartsville, Eddie Blankenship and wife Lisa of Shelby and Audrey Hudson of Athens, GA; one brother Frank Walker of Gastonia; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter.

A funeral service was held Sunday February 1, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Revs. Aaron Vess, Bobby Gettys and Walker Toney officiating.  The family received friends one hour prior to the service from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times were at the home of Eddie Blankenship 3113 Pokeville Road Shelby, NC.  Interment was in Dysartsville Baptist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dysartsville Baptist Church Building Fund 24 Club House Road Nebo, NC 28761.  An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.

Ethel Zina Morgan Black, 95, of Marion, NC, passed away Wednesday March 11, 2009 at St. Joseph Campus in Asheville, NC.  She was born, October 3, 1913 to the late Flemming Morgan and Elizabeth Mosteller Morgan.  Ms. Black was a devout Christian.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband Glenn Black; one brother Floyd Morgan; and one sister Clara Harris.

Surviving are one son Ray Morgan and wife Louise of Marion; one brother Gene Morgan and wife of Marion; three sisters, Eva Shirlen, Esther Lawing and Gurthie Hunter all of Marion; two grandchildren, Bill Morgan of Rutherfordton and Brenda Vaughn and husband Bobby Joe of Marion; seven step-grandchildren, Vanessa Bartlett and husband Rick, Anita Smith and husband Avery, Robert Kirby, Teresa Pal and husband Chris, Bryan Kirby, Donald Kirby and wife Tammy and Kim Braswell; thirty great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and several special friends.

Services were held at 11:00 AM on Saturday March 14, 2009 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion with Rev. Jimmy Upton, Rev. Douglas Carpenter and Rev. Randy Stevens officiating.  Burial followed at Nealsville Church of God Cemetery.

Benge, Douglas Allen (2009)

Obituary of Douglas Allen Benge ~ 2009

Douglas Allen Benge, 59, of Marion went to be with the Lord on Tuesday March 3, 2009 while at the Charles George V.A. Medical Center in Asheville, NC.  A native of McDowell County, he was born June 10, 1949 to Josephine Bertha Bledsoe Lewis and the late Clarence Salford Benge, Doug graduated from Glenwood High School in 1967 and enlisted in the US Army that same year.  He served for 17 years, including one tour of duty in Vietnam and attained the rank of SSG.

Doug is survived by his daughter Keisha Benge and three grandsons, Kyle, Gavin, and Ian; four brothers: Mickey Benge and wife Jeanette of Hartwell, GA, Robin Benge and wife Cheryl of Nebo, Jerry Benge and wife Debbie of Marion, and Terry Benge of Nebo; two sisters: Penny Fox and husband Ronnie of Morganton, Ann Minnish of Marion; three nieces and three nephews, six great nieces and five great nephews.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday March 17, 2009 at 6:00 PM in the Westmoreland Chapel with Pastor Robbie Waddle officiating.  The family received friends from 5:00-6:00 PM one hour prior to the service in the Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Douglas Allen Benge’s memory to the American Cancer Association 120 Executive Park Asheville, NC 28801, or to Hospice of McDowell County 575 Airport Road Marion, NC 28752.   Military Honors were provided by the US Army from Ft. Frances Melton Beach of Old Fort, 87, entered her Heavenly home on February 15, 2009 at the John Keever Solace Center.  Mrs. Beach was born in McDowell County to the late Mills Melton and Bessie Gibson Melton.  She was a homemaker and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband B.F. Beach; two brothers Walter Melton and Lawrence Melton; and one sister Ruby Davis.

She is survived by two daughters, Martha Dunham, husband Jerry of Old Fort; and Janice Patton, husband Burton of Old Fort, three grandchildren Amy Sherrill, husband David of Old Fort, Charles Dunham Jr., wife Amy of Old Fort and Jason Dunham, wife Amanda of Marion; five great-grandchildren, Megan Ricketts, Brittany Ricketts, Adrianna Dunham, Emma Dunham and Aiden Dunham.

Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday February 18, 2009 at Kirksey Funeral Chapel in Old Fort with the Rev. Rick Griffin officiating.  Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Cemetery.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Memorials may be made to the John F. Mrs. Rachel Everhart Baker, age 76 of Dysartsville passed away on Thursday February 19, 2009 at The McDowell Hospital.  A native of Davidson County, Rachel was born on October 30, 1932 to the late William Everhart and Nettie Cope Everhart.  Her family will remember her as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Her husband Harry Baker and a daughter Teresa Cox preceded her in death.

Deeply saddened by this loss are her remaining four children, Ellis Gene Murph and his wife Abby of Lexington, and Gary Murph and his fiancée Cathy, Perry Murph and Terri Sumlin and her husband Kim, all of Dysartsville; brothers and sisters, Billie Earwood and her husband Sammy, Wayne Everhart and his wife Norma Jean and Pat Gibson and her husband Bubba; five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on Friday February 20, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Laurel Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Todd Herold and Rev. Ronnie Gentry officiating.  The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial was in the church cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.  Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Maude Cain Avery, age 88 of Nebo went to meet her Lord Tuesday February 17, 2009.  A native of Mitchell County, she was born to the late Martha Yelton Cain and Chesley Cain.  In addition to her mother and father she was preceded in death by husbands Charlie Rector Weeks, Marshall Slagle and Wallace Avery and two sons, Charles Weeks and James Weeks.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters: Arlene Terry, Betty W. Mace and husband Arnold, Emma Lou Smith and husband Junior, Josie Rockett and friend Bill Surratt, Anna Moore and husband Clay; a son Hershel Dean Weeks; thirty seven grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 26, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Gentry officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  A very special thank you goes to Sunrise Rehab and Care Center and to The Marion Fire Dept. where grandson James Mace and wife Julie are members.  Also a note of gratitude to Westmoreland Funeral Home for all their assistance during this time of sorrow.  In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Volunteer Association of the Marion Fire Dept. Walter Allen Arrowood, 79, of Marion, passed away Tuesday January 20, 2009 at McDowell Hospital.

He was born March 22, 1929 in McDowell County, NC to the late John Levi Arrowood and Gettie Dixon Arrowood.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Hazel Ann Morgan Arrowood of the home; one son Allen Arrowood of Marion; two daughters, Kathy Coffey and husband Danny and Annettia Brooks and husband Berton all of Marion; two sisters, Sylvia Medford and Ella Mae Clark both of Marion; four granddaughters, Shirley, Andrea, Anet & Becky; three great granddaughters, Breann, Zoie & Maggie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held at 11:00 AM on Friday January 23, 2009 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion with Rev. Jimmy Upton and Rev.
