Jewel Lee White, 91 of Marion died April 21, 1999 at the McDowell Hospital. Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph White, he was a retired self-employed brick mason.

Surviving is his wife Nellie White of Marion; a daughter Linda White Shelton of Acworth, GA; a brother Joe Junior White of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association NC Affiliate Region 1 50 S. French Broad St. Asheville, NC 28801. Westmoreland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bertie Suttlemyre White, age 92 of Old Fort passed away Sunday August 24, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville. Mrs. White was born in McDowell County on June 9, 1916 and was the daughter of the late A.L. Suttlemyre and Katherine Stepp Suttlemyre. She was a member of Old Fort United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Her family will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother. Preceding Mrs. White in death was her husband Chaney M. White.

Surviving Mrs. White are one daughter Gay White of Old Fort; and one granddaughter Celeste White.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday August 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Old Fort Methodist Church with Rev. Ronald Allcorn officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in McDowell Memorial Park.

Mr. Kenneth L. “Kenny” Waters, age 59 of the Dysartsville community passed away on Thursday January 15, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born in Burke County on June 18, 1949 to the late Benjamin C. Waters and Lula Morrison Waters. Kenny was retired from Rutherford Electric Co-op following over 37 years of service. He will be remembered by his family and friends as an avid hunter and gun enthusiast. He was a friend to many and all who knew and loved him will agree that he was a man who… loved to talk!

Surviving are his loving wife Anita; three children, Greg Ward of Morganton, Misty Callahan and her husband Woody of Dysartsville and Alex Hawkins of Marion; two brothers, Lem Waters of Morganton and Jerry Waters of Marion; a sister Carolyn Woodcock of Warner-Robins, GA; eight grandchildren, Zach, Jake and Eli Ward, Jonathan, Caleb and Tanner Callahan, and Tara and Ashley Hawkins; and his mother-in-law Betty Modzel.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday January 20, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Joe Frobose officiating. Bobby Lee Waycaster, 68 of Marion passed away Sunday November 23, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Mitchell County to the late Raymond Gilbert Waycaster and Faye Bradshaw Waycaster. He had lived in McDowell County most of his life and was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and taught the men’s Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of the 1958 class of Pleasant Gardens High School.

He is survived by his son Mark Russell Waycaster and wife Mary of Anaheim, CA; 2 brothers, John Waycaster of Marion and James Waycaster and wife Elizabeth of Rutherfordton, NC; 1 sister Judy Reynolds and husband Bob of Marion.

Services were held (at) the McCall Memorial Chapel in Marion on Wednesday November 19, 2008 (sic) at 1:00 PM with Rev. Chester West officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Collis Cemetery in Yancey County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, SC or The Mt. Mitchell Shriner’s Club in Marion, NC. Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion will be assisting the family.

Calvin Edward Vess, 84, of Old Fort passed away Saturday November 15, 2008 at his residence. He was born in McDowell County to the late Eskimo and Estelle Patterson Vess. He was self-employed as a carpenter. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was a member of the VFW. He attended Cox’s Creek Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, James and Ollis Vess.

He is survived by his wife Ruby Vess of the home; five children, Judy Noblitt and husband Paul, Glenda Thomas and husband Jerry, both of Fort Myers, FL, Chuck Vess and wife Cheryl of Marion, Stanley Vess and wife Cathy of Old Fort, Stewart Vess and wife Gina of Durham; three brothers, Harold Vess, Floyd Vess and wife Georgie, Lloyd Vess and wife Wilma, and one sister Virginia Sword and husband “Shorty,” all of Old Fort; five grandchildren, Mark Thomas, Michelle Vess, Kristy Tabisula, Shannon Vess and Kristin Higgins; and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday November 17, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Davistown Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends 30 minutes prior to the graveside service at the cemetery. Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort will be assisting the family.

Bill Vess, Jr., age 52 of Marion passed away Tuesday March 24, 2009 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of McDowell County Bill was born June 24, 1956 and is a son of William Louis Vess, Sr. of Marion and the late Shirley Lee Wellborn.

Surviving Mr. Vess in addition to his father are two children: Jamie Clark and Khristal Blankenship of Morganton; five grandchildren, Maci, Connor, Raja, Ana and Madden; brother David Vess of Marion and sister Sandy Wainscott of Marion.

A memorial service will be held Friday March 27 2009 at 4:00 pm in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Barry Gouge officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Sarah “Frankie” Frances Turner, 66, of Waxhaw, NC, formerly of Old Fort, passed away Friday, November 28, 2008 at her sister’s residence in Mooresville, NC. She was born April 2, 1942 in Union County, NC to the late Roy Hazel Helms and Pearl “Peg” Elizabeth Griffin Helms. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband Donald Lee “DL” Turner, Jr. and three sons, David Jackson, Shawn Turner and Johnny Culley.

Surviving are three sons, Tony Jackson, Gene Jackson and Dale Culley; three daughters, Mazie Perdue, Linda Limback and Elizabeth Ann Kittridge; one brother Boyce Helms; one sister Joyce McGee; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a very special best friend Shirley Mann.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday December 3, 2008 at Kirksey Chapel in Old Fort. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region 1420 East Seventh Street Charlotte, NC 28204.

Sandy Tyo Turner, age 59 of Marion passed away on Thursday October 2, 2008 at  The McDowell Hospital. A native of McDowell County, Sandy was born on October 20, 1948 to the late Otis Archie Tyo and Garnet Malcolm Tyo of Marion. Her family will remember her as a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and sister. Her love of gardening with her father continued even after his passing and she was quite talented at growing vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed writing poetry.

Surviving in addition to her mother are three children, Kimberly Pritchard, Kevin Elliott and Tonia Bartlett and her husband Fabian, all of Marion; a sister Naomi Hollifield and her husband Leroy of Marion; two brothers, Archie Tyo and his wife Joanne of Cornelius and Tunis Tyo of Texas; four grandchildren, Christopher Pritchard of Michigan and Kayla, Amber and Matthew Bartlett, all of Marion; and eight nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harold Wesley Treadway, age 78 of Marion passed away August 15, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Madison County, born December 13, 1929. He was a veteran of the US Army and formerly worked for Norton-Ramsey Truck Lines.
