Oberia “Obie” Seay Read Edwards, 84, of Asheville, passed away Friday, November 7, 2008 at Four Seasons Hospice in Flat Rock, NC.  She was born in Haywood County to the late Hayes Seay and Gertrude Mull Seay.  Oberia was raised in Bryson City, NC and graduated from Swain County High School in 1943.  She loved Marion and lived here from 1968 until 1997.  She was a Deputy Clerk of Court for McDowell County until her retirement in 1991.  She loved crossword puzzles and the mountains.

She was a devout Christian and read the Bible all the way through two times a year for over 30 years.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband Richard H. Read, Sr, her second husband Tench Edwards; 2 sisters, Hazel Seay Welch and Evelyn Seay Beatty; and 1 brother Buddy Seay.

She is survived by 2 sons, Dick Read and wife Betsy of Goldsboro, and Jeff Edwards of Arden; 2 brothers, Jack Seay and wife Doris and Arnold Seay and wife Christine both of Marion; 2 sisters, Thelma Parker and husband Glenn of Marion, and Lenna Milam and husband Robert of Forest City; a grandson Tony Read and wife Amy of Wilmington; 3 great grandchildren, Jack Read, Ava Read, Lydia Read; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Sunday November 9, 2009 at 11:00 AM in the Kirksey-McCall Memorial Chapel in Marion.  The family received friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the service.  Burial was in West Court Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to Clare-Bridge of Asheville for their love and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association.  Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion will be assisting the family.

Obituary of Donna (Gail) McMahan Edwards ~ 2008

Mrs. Donna (Gail) McMahan Edwards, age 64 of Marion passed away on Tuesday September 23, 2008 at her residence.  A native of McDowell County, Donna was born on August 16, 1944 to the late Robert McMahan and Hassie Shuford McMahan.  She was a member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church and was retired from the Marion Police Department following 24 years of service.  Donna loved, and was loved by everyone who knew her.  She will be missed. The Marion Police Department will serve as Honor Guards and pallbearers.  A brother Kenneth Lee McMahan preceded her in death.

Surviving are her husband of over 45 years, Howard Glenn Edwards; a son Christopher Joel Edwards of Marion; a sister Oleta Edwards of Marion; three special grandchildren, David Ellison, Christina Carter and Rebecca Blue; and four special great grandchildren, Cameron Ellison, Adriana Blizzard, Terri Blue and Elizabeth Blue.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday September 25, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church with Revs. Jerry Allen and Harold Webb officiating.

John Clark Early, 89, of Greensboro, lovingly known as the Candy Man, passed away on December 13, 2008 at Moses Cone Hospital.  Funeral service was held on Wednesday December 17, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Lawndale Baptist Church with interment to follow at Westminster Gardens Cemetery.  He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Gwendolyn Early; and one brother.

His immediate survivors are his wife Grace of the home; daughters, Phyllis and Jim Willard of Jamestown; Susan and Joe DePeri of Greensboro; Linda Phillips of Greensboro; Scotti Lanier of Oak Ridge; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.  He was patriotic and loyal to his country having served in World War II.  He was a member of the American Legion in Greensboro, and Masonic Lodge 656 of Greensboro.  He was a charter member of Lawndale Baptist Church and a faithful supporter of his Church as exemplified by his involvement in the Senior Adult Choir, his Sunday School Class, and serving as a Greeter on Sunday mornings.  His greatest loves were God, Country, and Family.  He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Friends may visit on Tuesday December 16, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Lawndale Baptist Church.  The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Stanley Tennant, MD and Lori Cannon, NP; and the staff at Greensboro cardiology and the Palliative Care Unit at Moses Cone Hospital.  On line condolences may be made to

Tim (Joel) Duncan, age 41, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday September 20, 2008.  A native of McDowell County, he was born September 5, 1967 to Joe James Duncan and Ruby Smith Duncan.  Mr. Duncan was chairman of the Deacon board at New Horizon Baptist Fellowship.  A wonderful son, husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, Sunday School Teacher, Law Enforcement Instructor and especially a wonderful disciple of Jesus.  How can we go on without you?  Only through Jesus.

In addition to his parents Mr. Duncan leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife Jamie Burleson Duncan and two daughters Paige Elizabeth and Brianna Jo Duncan of the home; Mother-in-law Nora Johnson; two sisters: Tammy Duncan Willis and husband Ray of Marion and Traci Duncan Silver and husband Jeff of Belmont; three nieces Brittany Willis, Mandi Silver and Fiance’ Chris Waldrop and Kelsey Silver; a nephew Joshua Willis and a host of friends.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday September 23, at 11:00 AM at New Horizon Fellowship with Revs. Phil Murdock and Norman Hansley officiating.  The family received friends on Monday September 22, 2008 from 4:00-6:00 P at Westmoreland Funeral Home.  Burial was in Mt. Obituary of Teresa Lynn Foxx Duncan ~ 1999

Teresa Lynn Foxx Duncan, 42 of Marion died Saturday April 24, 1999 in Memorial Mission Hospital of Asheville.  Born to Alvin B. and Estella Autrey Foxx, she was previously employed as a Dental Assistant with Dr. David DuBose and Gary Grindstaff of Marion.  She was also a member of the Marion Lion’s Club and attended Garden Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving is her husband Ted W. Duncan; several aunts and uncles and many special friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday April 27, 1999 at Garden Creek Baptist Church.  The Rev. Allen McKinney officiated and burial was in McDowell Memorial Park.  Westmoreland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Louise Turner Duncan, age 85 of Marion passed away on Saturday January 31, 2009 at The McDowell Hospital.  A native of McDowell County, she was born on June 24, 1923 to the late Edward M. Turner and Bessie Hawkins Turner.  Her family and friends will warmly remember her for her kindness to all and her loving and giving spirit.  Many people knew her as a “Mother and Granny” to them and are saddened by this loss.  Two children, Mary Anne Wilson and Billy Wayne Parker, and a brother-in-law John Casey, preceded her in death.

Surviving are eight children, Peggy Casey of Rock Hill, SC, Truman Duncan and wife Grace of Marion, Robert Parker and wife Nancy of Rock Hill, SC, Butch Parker of Marion, Roger Parker and wife Patricia of Rock Hill, SC, Paul Miller and wife Patricia of Marion, Joe Miller and wife Rhonda of Marion and Donna Miller-Shuffler and her husband John of Florida, and Jamie Parker, who she raised as a daughter; a son-in-law Jerry Wilson; her twin sister Lucille Holland of Marion; twenty-eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog Cricket.

A funeral service was held on Monday February 2, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Revs. Chris Clayton and William Shuffler officiating.  The family received friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial was in the Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.  An online register is available under OBITUARIES at

Duncan, Leona Fox (2008)

Obituary of Leona Fox Duncan ~ 2008

Mrs. Leona Fox Duncan, age 100, known by all as “Mamaw”, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2008 at The McDowell Hospital.  She was born August 24, 1908 in Alexander County and was a daughter of the late Lee Carriagan Fox and Rosa Oliver Fox.  Mrs. Duncan was a charter member and oldest member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church.  She retired from Cross Cotton Mill after 52 years of service.  She was the first McDowell County Citizen to receive a plaque for reaching 100 years of age.  In addition, she was personally called by President George W. Bush on her birthday.  She will be remembered as the tender and loving matriarch of the family.  Preceding Mrs. Duncan in death was her husband Elmer Duncan and two children, Billy Duncan and Rosa Jane Bruner.

Left to cherish Mrs. Duncan’s memory are three children: Doris Romine, Dorothy Biddix, Betty Stevens and husband Paul, all of Marion; eleven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, twenty great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

A funeral service was held Sunday October 19, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Cross Memorial Baptist Church with Revs. Doug Prevette, Rick Wood and Ralph Reep officiating.  The family received friends on Saturday October 18, 2008 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at Westmoreland Funeral Home.  Interment was in Cross Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to The Family c/o 60 Stones Throw Path Marion, NC 28752.
