Pauline Elizabeth Dover, 77 of Marion passed away Monday September 15, 2008 at her residence.  She was born in McDowell County to the late Hughie R. Presnell and Mary Hutchins Presnell.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister Carrie Dalton and 3 brothers, Charlie Presnell, Ken Presnell, and Frank Presnell.

She is survived by her husband Robert L. Dover of the home; a son Robert L Dover, Jr. and grandson Austin Dover of Marion; 2 daughters, Paula Pittman and husband Kermit of Spruce Pine, and Debra Edwards and husband Daniel of Marion; a brother Bud Presnell and wife Linda of Rocky Pass; a sister Betty Thomas and husband Freddie of Nebo.

Services will be held Wednesday September 17, 2008 at 6:30 pm in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Matthew Mills officiating.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 6:30 prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.  Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the family.

Glenda Ray L. Dockery, 59, of Marion went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday February, 18, 2009 at Memorial Mission after years of declining health.  She was a native of McDowell County and a homemaker.  She was also a loving mother, sister, and friend.  She was a member of Hicks Memorial Baptist Church.  Mrs. Dockery was the daughter of the late Lewis Ervin and Lula Arrowood Causby Ray.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband Ronald Dockery.

She is survived by her loving children; a daughter Cindy Ledford of Marion; a son Ellis Ledford of Marion; a brother Dr. James F. Causby and wife June of Candler, NC; three nephews, Cory & wife Kristle Causby and children Laurel and Bryce of Waynesville, NC, John and wife Amber Causby and children Peyton & Asher of Brevard, NC, Kent Causby of Smithfield, NC; two aunts, Maebell Arrowood & Jacquiline Pilkenton both of Marion, NC, and a number of cousins, family and friends she loved so dearly.

Services were held at 10:30 AM Saturday February 21, 2009 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Larry Cable officiating.  The family received friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday February 20, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial followed the service in Bethel Baptist Cemetery.  Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the Dockery family.

Jimmie Florence Dickson, 92, wife of the late Dr. Bryan A. Dickson of Marion died Sunday April 25, 1999 in the McDowell Hospital.  Born to the late James P. and Minnie Parkman Florence, she was a graduate of the University of Georgia.  She taught school at Cross Mill Elementary School and was a former member of the Marion City School Board.  Following her professional career, she was a homemaker.  She was active in the blood donor program for the Red Cross and was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marion, where she was very active in the Women of the Church.

Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law Charles B. and Harriett Dickson of Marion, VA; a sister Estelle Florence Anderson of Augusta, GA; two granddaughters, Caroline Angstadt of Rural Retreat, VA and Elizabeth McCurry of Asheville; and two great granddaughters, Cassandra and Christina Angstadt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock on Wednesday April 28, 1999 at First Presbyterian Church of Marion.  The Rev. Dr. Larry Sizemore will officiate and burial will be in McDowell Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to Women of Presbyterian Church First Presbyterian Church of Marion 124 West Fort Street Marion, NC 28752 or to the charity of your choice.  Westmoreland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dawson, James Patrick (2008)

Obituary of James Patrick Dawson ~ 2008

Mr. James Patrick Dawson, age 82 of Old Fort passed away Thursday October 30, 2008.  Mr. Dawson was born in Burlington, NJ on March 17, 1926 and was a son of the late James Dawson and Eve Mary Wright Dawson.  He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, a U.S. Navy Veteran and was former owner-operator of the NAPA store in Black Mountain.  Prior to this he was the owner of Dot’s Dario in Pleasant Gardens.

Surviving Mr. Dawson are his wife Rose Covert Dawson of the home; four daughters: Linda Terraferma and husband Jerry of Ft. Lauderdale, Karen Genualdi and husband Andrew of Summit, NJ, Mary Jayne Dawson and Kimberly Dawson, both of Charlotte and seven grandchildren.  Mr. Dawson was a loving, sentimental husband, a caring and loving father and grandfather, a friend to all, who loved to build birdhouses and enjoyed all sports.

Funeral services were held Saturday November 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church with The Most Reverend William Curlin, D.D. officiating.  The family received friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Interment was in McDowell Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Our Lady Of The Angels Catholic Church 258 N. Garden St. Marion, NC 28752.  An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.

Mr. Steve “Easy” Davis, age 38 of Marion passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday January 27, 2009 at his residence.  Born in McDowell County on April 1, 1970, he was the only son of Jack and Janice Killough Davis of Marion.  A longtime employee of Tom Johnson’s Camping Center, he attended Maranatha Baptist Church.  Fishing and hunting were his most favorite pastimes.  His family and friends will remember him for his easy-going nature and friendly disposition.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife Christina Mae Davis; three children, Steven, Briana and Tre’, all of Marion; a sister Trisha Styles of Marion; and his paternal grandmother Clara Walker of Spencer.

A service to celebrate his passing into his heavenly reward was held on Friday January 30, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Dean Silver officiating.  The family received friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial was in the Davistown Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Old Fort.  An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.

Carolyn Dianne McMahan Davis of Marion passed away Saturday August 30, 2008 at The McDowell Hospital.  She was born in McDowell County to the late Robert Donald McMahan and Patricia Ann Godfrey.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her mother-in-law Patricia Davis.

She is survived by her husband Keith Davis; 2 sons, Cody Ivers of Glenwood and Todd Ollis of Marion; 1 daughter Heather Conner and husband Jeremy of Marion; father-in-law Jerry Davis; an uncle Joe McMahan; 4 sisters, Rita McKinney, Donnna Sue McMahan, Jennifer Crouch, and Dawn McMahan; 2 brothers, Eric and Jimmy Heffernan; and sister-in-law Tracy Guice.

A Memorial service was held by the family on Thursday at Mountain Creek Independent Baptist Church at 4:00 PM with Rev. Billy Conner and Rev. Donald Honeycutt offciating.  The family received friends from 3:00 to 4:00 at the church.

Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the family.

Dameron, Nancy Gordon (2009)

Obituary of Nancy Gordon Dameron ~ 2009

Nancy Gordon Dameron, 94, died on Tuesday January 20, 2009 at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community.  Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday January 24, 2009 at St. Giles Episcopal Church at Deerfield with The Rev. Morgan Gardner and The Rev. Haywood Holderness officiating. Interment followed at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion.

Nancy Gordon was born on November 27, 1914 in Scotland Neck to the Rev. William Jones Gordon and Anna Clark Gordon.  The family moved to Spray, NC (now Eden), where her father was rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.  Nancy was graduated from St. Mary’s Junior College, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority — and from John’s Hopkins University School of Nursing.  She was married in 1939 to Emerson Penn (“Sandy”) Dameron.  They lived in Greensboro until moving in 1940 to Marion – and in 1990 to Deerfield.

During the family’s life in Marion, Nancy served on the Altar Guild at St. John’s Episcopal Church and as an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary.  In the 22 years when she had at least one child in the McDowell County Schools, she was a volunteer leader in many aspects of public education.  Nancy used her nursing skills through her work with the American Red Cross as a bloodmobile volunteer, and with Marion General Hospital Auxiliary.  She helped re-open the McDowell Public Library, which had been closed due to budget cuts.  She also served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.  She is beloved by her children for sewing their clothing from scratch, her zeal for gardening, her cooking and delivering thoughtful culinary gifts, her eternal carpooling, her humanitarianism, and her love of the Episcopal Church.  Especially, she was devoted to her husband Sandy.  For her volunteer efforts, Nancy was honored by the governor as a recipient of a State of North Carolina Volunteer Award.  Nancy is predeceased by her parents; her husband Sandy; her sister Almeria Gordon; and her brother the Rt. Rev. William Gordon Jr.

Surviving also are four children, Anna (Nan) Dameron of Hillsborough, Mary Holderness and husband Haywood of Durham, Elizabeth (Betsy) Poindexter and husband Albert of Summerfield, Penn Dameron and wife Vicki of Union Mills; and four sisters, Laura Gordon Williams of Black Mountain, Jocelyn Gordon of Eden, Mary Gordon of Kingsport, Tenn., and Grace Gordon Pless and husband Cecil of Asheville.  Nancy’s grandchildren include Anna Dollar and husband Bob of Concord, Elizabeth Burns and husband Derek of Hillsborough, Dail Holderness and wife Laurie of Raleigh, Penn Holderness and wife Kim of Raleigh, Janet Bateman and husband Robert of Greensboro, Emerson Dameron, III of Glendale, CA, Silas Dameron and wife Vickie of Chicago.  She has two step-grandchildren, Leah Greene of Spindale and Curtis Morgan of Union Mills.  There are six great-grandchildren, Brandon and Eric Dollar, Owen and Anna Grace Burns, Lola and Ella Holderness; and one step-great-grandchild Lilly Greene.

Roxie Duncan Chrisawn, age 100 of Marion passed away Friday November 28, 2008 at Sunrise Rehab & Care Center.  Mrs. Chrisawn was born on Monroe County to the late John and Sally Branch Duncan.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Claude Chrisawn; a son Bruce Chrisawn; a sister Belle Chrisawn; & 2 brothers, Bill and Floyd Duncan.

Mrs. Chrisawn is survived by 2 daughters, Wilma Moore of Columbia, SC and Gladys Thomas of Burnsville, NC; 4 grandchildren, Freddie Smith, Gery Thomas, Joe Smith and Penny Chrisawn; 2 great grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas, Craig Thomas; 1 great-great grandchild Bailey Jo Zimmer.Services were held Monday at 11:00 AM at West Marion Baptist Church.  The family received friends 30 minutes prior to the service.  Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion will be assisting the family.
