John Edward Williams, 67, of Marion, NC, went to be with the Lord on Thursday February 26, 2009 at McDowell Hospital. He was born, December 10, 1941, in McDowell County, NC to Daniel Lee Williams of Marion and to the late Connie Wilkerson Williams.

In addition to his Father, left behind to cherish his memory are one brother, four sisters and several nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and other friends.

Services were held at 3:00 PM on Sunday March 1, 2009 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion. Burial followed at McDowell Cemetery. Aiden Ryder Williams, age 7 months, went to be with Jesus on Monday February 16, 2009 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Aiden was born on June 20, 2008 to Jonathan Williams and Danielle Stevenson.

In addition to his parents, Aiden is survived by his paternal grandmother Holly Trumble, paternal grandfather Bobby Gregory; maternal grandmother LaDonne Turner and husband Kevin; maternal grandfather Tommy Stevenson and wife Dana; a sister Ainsley Williams; family and friends too numerous to list.

A celebration of Aiden’s life was held at 2:00 PM on Saturday February 21, 2009 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Dwayne Turner and Rev. Mike Church officiating. The family received friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 at the funeral home. Burial was in Bethel Freewill Baptist church cemetery.

Glenda Bernice Skipper Whiting, age 61 of Marion passed away Monday November 24, 2008. Glenda was born in Rutherford County on May 18, 1947 and was the daughter of the late Garner Cleveland Skipper and Harriet Susan Hill Skipper. She was a caring LPN and a loving mother and grandmother who will be remembered with a warm smile.

Surviving Mrs. Whiting are two children: Michelle Eckenrod and her husband Mark and Anthony Whiting and his wife Jill, all of Marion and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday December 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in Westmoreland Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. John Michael Whiteley, age 59 of Marion passed away unexpectedly Tuesday March 3, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oteen. A native of Baltimore, MD, he was born on August 1, 1949 to the late William Thomas Whiteley, Sr. and Margaret Sexton Whiteley Webb of Marion. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during the Vietnam War. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. A brother William Thomas “Bill” Whiteley preceded him in death.

Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Julie Whiteley Harrison and Jennifer Whiteley, both of Rutherford County; his step-father Claude Webb; three sisters, Lynne Steppe of Old Fort, Patti Briggs of Nebo and Claudia Rumfelt of Marion; one grandson Lucas Harrison; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service with military honors by the U. S. Army was held on Saturday March 7, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Philip Steppe officiating. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Whiteley Memorial Fund at PO Box 216 Nebo, NC 28761.

Jewel Lee White, 91 of Marion died April 21, 1999 at the McDowell Hospital. Born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph White, he was a retired self-employed brick mason.

Surviving is his wife Nellie White of Marion; a daughter Linda White Shelton of Acworth, GA; a brother Joe Junior White of South Carolina; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association NC Affiliate Region 1 50 S. French Broad St. Asheville, NC 28801. Westmoreland Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bertie Suttlemyre White, age 92 of Old Fort passed away Sunday August 24, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Asheville. Mrs. White was born in McDowell County on June 9, 1916 and was the daughter of the late A.L. Suttlemyre and Katherine Stepp Suttlemyre. She was a member of Old Fort United Methodist Church and a homemaker. Her family will remember her as a loving mother and grandmother. Preceding Mrs. White in death was her husband Chaney M. White.

Surviving Mrs. White are one daughter Gay White of Old Fort; and one granddaughter Celeste White.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday August 27, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Old Fort Methodist Church with Rev. Ronald Allcorn officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in McDowell Memorial Park.

Mr. Kenneth L. “Kenny” Waters, age 59 of the Dysartsville community passed away on Thursday January 15, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born in Burke County on June 18, 1949 to the late Benjamin C. Waters and Lula Morrison Waters. Kenny was retired from Rutherford Electric Co-op following over 37 years of service. He will be remembered by his family and friends as an avid hunter and gun enthusiast. He was a friend to many and all who knew and loved him will agree that he was a man who… loved to talk!

Surviving are his loving wife Anita; three children, Greg Ward of Morganton, Misty Callahan and her husband Woody of Dysartsville and Alex Hawkins of Marion; two brothers, Lem Waters of Morganton and Jerry Waters of Marion; a sister Carolyn Woodcock of Warner-Robins, GA; eight grandchildren, Zach, Jake and Eli Ward, Jonathan, Caleb and Tanner Callahan, and Tara and Ashley Hawkins; and his mother-in-law Betty Modzel.

Bobby Lee Waycaster, 68 of Marion passed away Sunday November 23, 2008 at his residence. He was born in Mitchell County to the late Raymond Gilbert Waycaster and Faye Bradshaw Waycaster. He had lived in McDowell County most of his life and was a self-employed contractor. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church and taught the men’s Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of the 1958 class of Pleasant Gardens High School.

He is survived by his son Mark Russell Waycaster and wife Mary of Anaheim, CA; 2 brothers, John Waycaster of Marion and James Waycaster and wife Elizabeth of Rutherfordton, NC; 1 sister Judy Reynolds and husband Bob of Marion.

Services were held (at) the McCall Memorial Chapel in Marion on Wednesday November 19, 2008 (sic) at 1:00 PM with Rev. Chester West officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service. Burial was in Collis Cemetery in Yancey County. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, SC or The Mt. Mitchell Shriner’s Club in Marion, NC. Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion will be assisting the family.
