Donald W. “Don” Thoma, Sr. formerly of New Jersey died Thursday December 25, 2008. Mr. Thoma was a resident of Glenwood for 32 years and a former member of the Central Baptist Church in Woodbury, NJ. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired businessman and farmer. For 60 years, he was a member of Florance Lodge #87 AF & AM and a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory. For 62 years he was a member of the Friendship Fire Co., where he served as Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief. He was a member of the N.J. State Fireman’s Assoc. and also served as City Fire Marshal for a number of years. After moving to Glenwood he became a member of the fire department. His wife of 52 years, the late Hilda M. Burnette Thoma died in 1995.
Surviving are his daughter Sandra G. Thoma; three sons, Donald W. Thoma, Jr., Douglas R. Thoma, and Eben D. Thoma; grandchildren, Tracey L. York, Sarah C. Vess, Jacob A. and Samuel L. Thoma, Summer I. Thoma; two great grandchildren, Colin M. Vess and Ava V. Vess; one brother Ferd G. Thoma of Wenonah, NJ.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday December 27, 2008 in Piney Mountain Cemetery, Weaverville with Rev. Jim Brewer officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Burnette Cemetery Fund 72 Murphy Hill Rd. Weaverville, NC 28787.
