Obituary of John Michael Whiteley ~ 2009

John Michael Whiteley, age 59 of Marion passed away unexpectedly Tuesday March 3, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Oteen. A native of Baltimore, MD, he was born on August 1, 1949 to the late William Thomas Whiteley, Sr. and Margaret Sexton Whiteley Webb of Marion. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during the Vietnam War. Fishing was one of his favorite pastimes. A brother William Thomas “Bill” Whiteley preceded him in death.
Surviving in addition to his mother are two daughters, Julie Whiteley Harrison and Jennifer Whiteley, both of Rutherford County; his step-father Claude Webb; three sisters, Lynne Steppe of Old Fort, Patti Briggs of Nebo and Claudia Rumfelt of Marion; one grandson Lucas Harrison; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service with military honors by the U. S. Army was held on Saturday March 7, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Philip Steppe officiating. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
