Tombstone Tuesday: Zannie Koonce Creagh Hatch

Zilphia “Zannie” Koonce was the daughter of Francis Duval Koonce & Hannah Rebecca Rhodes.  She married twice that I can tell, once to a Creagh and 2nd to John R. Hatch.  Zannie is buried in Koonce Cemetery in Richlands, the latest addition to the Cemeteries page on this site.  This cemetery has members of the Howard, Koonce & Taylor families.

Find-A-Grave contributor Caroline, who took pictures of all the tombstones in the cemetery, was kind enough to allow them to be shared on this site.  According to census records, Zannie did not have any children, but did have stepchildren with John.

1860 Slave Census Added

Newly added to the Census page is the 1860 Slave Census.  This data was contributed by Onslow County researcher Richard Phillips who has done an amazing job transcribing and analyzing the data using Microsoft Excel.

The graphical representations really help provide an overall understanding of the slave population/holders in the district.

Update: November 2012 — Richard has requested his contributions be removed from the site, so they have been.

Ramp Jones (1873-1947)

In the NC State Archives’ Flickr Photostream is this picture of Old Captain Ramp Jones

This picture was taken around 1939 and Ramp died January 11, 1947.  He was a sea captain of merchant ships and died in Stump Sound Townshihp.  He was the son of Harden Jones & Alphena Bloodgood.  His wife was named Minnie.  A larger version of the picture can be seen here.

Google Custom Search Added

A separate “Search” page has now been added to the site in order to allow you to search across all of the Onslow County resources.  The Search uses Google’s Custom Search application in order to create the search box and results pages.  Since this is Google, you can use all the same Google commands/operators/abbreviations that you are used to using.

A great advanatage of Google Search is that I can indicate which pages to search; so not only does this search use this site as a basis, but it will also search the Onslow County resources on the USGenWeb Archives Project website.

It may take a few more days before Google has the site completely indexed so until that time, your search results may not be completely representative of all the cotent availabe.  You can find the search page here. Check back next week!

Welcome to the New Onslow County Site

Welcome to the new Onslow County, NCGenWeb site.  I am your new county coordinator, Taneya, and I am delighted to be working on enhancing the site.  My interest in the county stems from my Koonce ancestors, who were slaves of the white Koonce family of Jones County.  However, I have an interest in everyone with the Koonce surname, and the white Koonce family had cousins in Onslow County.

I do not live in North Carolina, so am not able to help with local research, but I will try my best to assist you as best I can should you have any questions.

With the new site design, almost all URLs are changing, so please update your bookmarks.  You can check back often for updates by visiting or subscribing to this new blog.   To learn more about me, you can visit my personal genealogy blog at
