North Carolina State Archives Microfilm C.044.40001
Part 1

(transcribed and abstracted by Deloris Williams)

(Please note that some of the dates in these deeds do not seem to be in order with what is in the document, they were apparently alternating in using the New Style and Old Styles of the calendar for dating in some cases;  I am transcribing the dates and spellings as they are written; note that I have also used only the first letter of the words in describing directions, N/S/E/W.  Names are listed first with grantor, second is grantee. Keep in mind that for most of the deeds between private parties, the grantee was obligated to continue the payment of the yearly rent to John, Earl Granville as per the original land grants, in addition to the sale price quoted in the following abstracts. For those interested in the Robert Jones, Junr. listed in many of these deeds.   All of the entries were recorded by William Eaton, as Public Register, and the Clerk of the Court was Daniel Weldon, except as noted in individual entries.  Remember that early Granville Co. covered a much larger area than it does today, so you may want to look at some of the early maps on our Links page to get a better idea of the locations of the areas referred to in these deeds. As further info, Granville Co. was formed from Edgecombe Co. in 1746 creating St. John's Parish; in 1761, the western part of Granville became Granville Parish, while the Eastern part remained St. John's Parish; in 1764, all of St. John's Parish became Bute Co., later Warren & Franklin Counties.
