(Research by Deloris Williams)

Son of Dudley Sneed (1755-1806)

SAMUEL M. SNEED (born ca 1795, died ca 1822 Pike County, Georgia)

He was married to REBECCA H. _____, who was born Apr 1793 in NC or GA (census varies) -died Oct. 1865 Spalding County, Georgia, buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Spalding, GA. She remarried January 2, 1828 Pike Co, GA to WILLIAM J. ELLIS (May 29, 1805-Feb. 11, 1886 Spalding Co, GA). In 1850, WILLIAM J. & REBECCA ELLIS were in Henry Co, GA, and they were in Spalding Co, GA in 1860.

The Children of SAMUEL M. SNEED and REBECCA were:

DR. DUDLEY SNEED (born 1819- died Oct 9, 1848)

He was married to SARAH ANN CULBERSON, with whom he had one child, MARY DUDLEY SNEED (born Dec 2, 1848-died Oct 21, 1909 Atlanta, GA); she married THOMAS NATHANIEL HALL on June 9, 1868 in Troup Co, GA.  SARAH and MARY, along with THOMAS N. HALL, are buried in Hillview Cemetery in LaGrange, Georgia.

The Christian Index. (Washington, Ga.) November 02, 1848

Died, of congestive fever, at Lagrange, on the 9th of Oct., 1848, DR. DUDLEY SNEED, in the 29th year of his age. DR. SNEED had been for several years a member of the Baptist church in Lagrange, and by a life of humble, fervent piety, had much endeared himself to his brethren. His punctuality at the house of God, his earnest prayers for the salvation of souls, and for the prosperity of Zion, as well as his amiable and consistent deportment in all the relations of life, will long dwell in the kind and pleasant recollections of surviving friends. He lived the christian's life; he died the christian's death. A short time before he breathed his last, he made a satisfactory expression to a friend, of his confidence in the Saviour; and soon after sung aloud a portion of one of Zion's songs. Farewell my brother; thou art now, I trust, chanting in higher strains the praises of Immanuel.

SARAH ANN CULBERSON (born Sept 11, 1821-died Aug 25, 1893 Atlanta, GA)

THE ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 26 Aug 1893.
DEATH OF MRS. SNEED
An Aged Christian Lady Passes Away Yesterday Afternoon.

Late yesterday afternoon MRS. SARAH A. SNEED, one of the oldest and most respected residents of this city, died at the home of her son-in-law, MR. T. N. HALL, No. 35 Houston Street.
MRS. SNEED was in the seventy-second year of her age. For several months prior to her death she was a confirmed invalid, having been stricken with paralysis about a year and a half ago. She was patient and resigned, however, throughout her sufferings and manifested a brave and trustful Christian spirit.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, of this city, for a number of years, and was a leading communicant of that denomination. Her character was one of beautiful and unselfish devotion and she endeavored to live each day as if it was her last on earth. Her disposition was such that she was at all times surrounded by a multitude of friends and these in her last hours did all they could to render her passing away both tranquill and happy.
MRS. SNEED was the widow of the late DR. SNEED, of LaGrange, GA, one of the leading practitioners of that section. She came to Atlanta immediately after the death of her husband and has been residing in this city for about fifteen years. The funeral will occur from the late residence this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The remains will be taken to LaGrange, GA., for interment tomorrow morning.

MARY DUDLEY SNEED (Dec.1848- Oct.21, 1909 Atlanta, GA)
daughter of DR. DUDLEY SNEED.

The La Grange Reporter. (La Grange, Ga.), October 29, 1909

DEATH OF MRS. HALL

MRS. MARY HALL died last Thursday morning at her residence on Peachtree street in Atlanta. The body was brought to LaGrange Friday at noon and laid to rest in Hill View cemetery, services being conducted by DR. A. B. VAUGHAN. MRS. HALL was the daughter of DR. DUDLEY SNEED, a Carolinian, who afterwards moved to LaGrange, and the grandaughter of the late JAMES CULBERSON, a pioneer citizen of Troup county, in whose household she reared, her father dying while she was an infant. Her girlfriend was spent in LaGrange, where she afterwards attended the Southern Female College. She was a brilliant leader of beautiful women that graced the social life of LaGrange just after the civil war. She was married to MR. T.F. HALL in 1867 and moved to Atlanta in 1869.
She was a consistent member of the First Baptist church of Atlanta, and was a woman of unusual strength of character. A devoted wife and mother, she leaves a home saddened by her loss. Two children survive her, MISS ANNIE MAY HALL, of Atlanta, and MR. THOMAS N. HALL, of Birmingham.

LEROY SNEED vs THOMAS HUGHES

No. 70.—LEROY SNEED, plaintiff in error, vs. THOMAS HUGHES,
Defendant in error.

[1.] If G., the holder of a promissory note, transfer the same by delivery to H., knowing that an endorsement upon it is not genuine, and concealing the fact from H., this act is in fraud of H.; and G. is liable to repay what he received for the note to H., upon failure of the latter to recover from the endorser. '

[2.] In such a case, G. is not a competent witness in an action by H. against the endorser to prove the endorsement genuine; for being directly liable "to H. in the event of its being held otherwise, he is immediately interested" in the result. His interest is not balanced by a liability to the endorser for the tort, if by a false oath he should secure a recovery against him.

Assumpsit in Baker Superior Court. Tried before Judge PERKINS, October Term 1853.
This action was against LEROY SNEED, as the endorser upon a promissory note, made by DUDLEY SNEED, JR., and payable to E. P. SNEED or bearer. The endorser pleaded non est factum; and on the trial of this issue, it appeared that LEROY SNEED transferred the note to JAMES R. GEORGE; and that GEORGE transferred it, with the endorsement upon it, to HUGHES, the plaintiff in the action.
After some evidence introduced by both parties, the plaintiff below tendered the depositions of JAMES R. GEORGE, to whom the note was transferred by LEROY SNEAD, to prove the genuineness of the endorsement.
Counsel for SNEED objected, on the ground that GEORGE was interested. The Court overruled the objection, and this decision is assigned as error.

The entire decision can be read here:

Notes:
E.P. SNEED was LEROY SNEED's wife, EMMA P. CHAPMAN, who he married January 9, 1844 in Monroe Co., Georgia.
JAMES R. GEORGE was LEROY's brother-in-law, the husband of his sister, ELIZABETH ANN SNEED.

A Listing of the Dudley Sneeds who have been confused with one another

There are many trees which have confused all of the DUDLEY SNEEDs from the Granville County families. Part of the confusion may have come from the actual probate files, as those of you who have looked at them will notice that the file of DUDLEY M. SNEED,  actually is the file of 3 different people, all of the papers thrown in together. In addition to DUDLEY M. SNEED, it contains papers from DUDLEY SNEED (1755-1806), and those of JEMIMA MITCHELL-SNEED. Following is a brief description of the correct DUDLEY SNEEDs.
The first, of course, is DUDLEY SNEED, born ca 1755, the son of SAMUEL SNEED & JANE DUDLEY.  He & his children are the subject of these 2 pages, so I will just say to read the documentation I have already included in Part 1
DUDLEY SNEED (ca 1798 - June 1827 Person Co, NC) was the son of THOMAS SNEED (1772-1825) & NANCY ANN PARKER (1774-1811 Person Co, NC; daughter of JONATHAN PARKER JR. & SARAH PRYOR).  DUDLEY was married Nov. 13, 1825 in Orange Co, NC to JACOBINA PARKER, b. ca 1805, the daughter of JOHN PARKER & MARY MILNER. A Marriage Bond for the couple, dated September 7, 1790, Bondsman, JOHN MILNER, was filed in Franklin County, NC. MARY MILNER-PARKER was the daughter of PATEWELL MILNER and JACOBINA WILSON. JACOBINA PARKER's sister, MARTHA PARKER, married SAMUEL GOOCH, a grandson of SAMUEL SNEED & JANE DUDLEY. The sisters were named among the heirs, along with NANCY PARKER, MARY PARKER, and JOHN PARKER, a minor in the 1833 distribution of funds in the Estate of PEYTON W. MILNER (PATEWELL MILNER), who died in 1789 Franklin County; SAMUEL GOOCH was attorney for the Heirs of ELIJAH/ELISHA PARKER; of note, the will of PATEWELL MILNER, written in 1788 Franklin Co., names his wife as JACOBINA, along with children JOHN, ALLEN, WILSON, JAMES, MARTHA, MARY, BATHSHEBA, JENNETT, and BENJAMIN WELLS MILNER.  DUDLEY didn't leave a will, but there was a sizeable estate that went to his widow JACOBINA, his brother JONATHAN P. SNEED, his sister, SALLY and her husband at the time, THOMAS V. HARGIS; by 1841, SALLY had remarried and was called SALLY WALK in her brother JONATHAN's will. DUDLEY & JACOBINA didn't have any children.
DUDLEY SNEED (1800-1863 Lee County, Georgia). The son of DUDLEY SNEED (1755-1806) is discussed in detail in Part 1 of this article
DUDLEY M. SNEED (1804- Sep 19, 1830 Burke Co, NC). The son of PHILIP SNEED (ca 1754-bef 1824) & JEMIMA ANN MITCHELL (ca 1765-1832)
He's the one that many have misidentified as either the son of SAMUEL & JANE, or as having married JACOBINA PARKER. He was neither of those men. He wasn't married and he left a will. DUDLEY was apparently involved in the gold mining business, since he was killed in a mine in the community of Brindle in  Burke County, NC (not Georgia) during a time when there were many active mines in North Carolina and there were many speculators interested in investing in gold mines. DUDLEY's death was recorded in the newspapers, which also gave his age:   The Raleigh Register, Oct 21, 1830, Thursday, Page 3:
DIED.

At Brindle's mine, in Burke County, on the 19th ultimo, MR. DUDLEY M. SNEED, of Granville County, aged about 26 years.

DUDLEY was in the 1830 Burke Co. Census, and he left a will in that County, in which he gave his property to his brother, and his brother's children. He appointed WILLIAM M. SNEED as his executor. WILLIAM was a lawyer and he was his 1st cousin, the son of STEPHEN SNEED & MARY WILLIAMS of Granville County.  DUDLEY only had one brother, JOSEPH P. SNEED, who had moved to Maury County, Tennessee by the time of his brother's death.   DUDLEY's will is transcribed here

DUDLEY SNEED (1819-Oct 9, 1848 LaGrange, Troup Co, Georgia) also known as Dr. DUDLEY SNEED, since he was a physician, was the son of SAMUEL M. SNEED and REBECCA H. _____, is the subject detailed above
