Subject: [NCWARREN] Roll Call--Duke, Dukes

I'm looking for information on James Duke, Benjamin Duke, and Robert Duke, who were in Granville County and then Warren when it was formed and then in both counties as well as others.  They came to North Carolina from Isle of Wight County, VA., and were all sons of John Duke II and Bridget (Smith?).
Other sons were William and John, known as William of Brunswick and John Duke the Elder to Duke/s researchers.  I have plenty of information on William and John, and some on Robert, but not while he was in Granville/Warren.  Land transactions show the presence of all these men except for James and Benjamin.

They were in Granville County beginning about 1730 and then in Warren, where they remained until they died except for Robert, who went to Northampton County.  They died in Warren County between about 1751 and 1800.  Many of their descendants remained in Warren County and may still be there.

I am especially interested in James and Benjamin, as I have no information about them at all, other than a couple of brief appearances in some scattered records.

I am also looking for a descendant of any of these men, Henry, who was born about 1775.  DNA tests put him in this family, descendants of John Duke of Isle of Wight County, VA.

Hi Barbara

I descend from Bennett Harris born ca 1787, died by Dec 1853 sale, Warren Co NC.  Bennett married Lucy Dowtin, daughter of John Dowtin, a Rev War patriot recognized  by the NSDAR.

I believe that some of Bennett Harris family went west as we have been unable to determine for sure who he was the son of but my cousin who wrote THE FAMILIES OF WARREN, FRANKILN, and GRANVILLE COUNTIES  believed that he either descended from Robert Harris and Anne Fulgham thru his son Robert  Harris Jr who married Anne Williamson, daughter of Joseph Williamson or from  Edward Harris born ca 1663.  Robert Harris who married Anne Fulgham was the brother of Edward Harris.

Thomas Harris  ca 1636 > Robert Harris born ca 1674 & Anne Fulgham> Robert Harris Jr  born ca 1719> Edmunds Harris died 1820 Warren Co> Bennett Harris
OR
Thomas Harris ca 1636> Edward Harris born  ca 1663 & Mary Turner>West Harris born 8-13-1716 died Salisbury 5-14-1795> unknown> Bennett Harris

Since you have the Harris surname & descend from Robert Harris and Anne Fulgham, would you possibly be familiar with my Bennett Harris and his parents?

Searching for the following Warren County families:

Harriett Harris (1827- Bef 1900) - Slave of James Young Harriss (parents James Henry Harriss and Mary Smilley).  Had children Alfred (wife Hester Nicholson-Brown), Richard Dick Harris (wife Mariah Watson).  After Emancipation, Hester is found with Albert Robinson with children Thomas, Billy, Dock, Mary, Sue, Abe, S (male), Jim and Cyrus Robinson in the home.
The Robinson line is of particular interest.

Ary Nicholson (1826-abt 1905) - Slave of Adkins Nicholson (parents John Jordan Nicholson and Sally Rivers Shearin).  Had children Hester Nicholson-Brown (husband Alfred J Harris), John Balthrop (wives Alice Baskerville and Betty Champion), Sallie D. Balthrop (husband Martin Boyd), Isabella Robinson (husband Dudley Plummer), Parmelia Robinson (husband Burwell Somerville), Wade D Robinson (wife Bettie Brown), and she raised her niece Fancy Foote (husband Plummer Brown).   Fathers of the above children are Washington Brown, Dennis Balthrop and Abram/Abner Robinson as revealed through various records.  I am very interested in uncovering these men's slave owners.

I would like to connect with anyone having a connection to any of the above family lines.

Subject: Re: [NCWARREN] Roll Call - PETTEWAY, GEE

PETTEWAY, John (1825-abt. 1913) and Julian (1830 - aft. 1900)

Looking for ancestors of John and Julian Petteway (brothers) who were first documented with the Petteway surname on the 1867 Voter Registration List in Matagorda County Texas on the farm of James B. Hawkins, formerly of NC.  Both, John and Julian were listed as born in NC and as having lived in Texas, Matagorda County, and the precinct (Hawkinsville, Texas) for 22 years. Based on census records and the birth of James B. Hawkins' first child  born in Texas whose birth was abt. 1846/1847, James B. came at the same time.

Additionally,  John and Julian (first names only) were listed on a Slave Manifest, November 1846, from New Orleans to Galveston, Texas with James B. Hawkins as "owner".  The information: age, height and color, matches information known by the families and descriptions on WWI Registration information and the 1880 Census for Matagorda County Texas.

The only Petteway (Pettiway, Petaway, etc) in Warren County was John Pettiway who died in 1790, long before John and Julian were born -- my ggrandfather John was born abt. 1825 and Julian abt. 1830.  As far as we know, John Petteway, my relative, did not return to NC.  He died in Texas ~ 1913.   His brother Julian was found on the 1900 Census for Warren County--Fork Township, along with one of John's daughters, Nettie (Antoinette) who married Andrew Perry in Warren County in 1896.  Because Julian "returned" to Warren County, we think there was a connection to Warren County. Oral history indicates than Julian left Texas with Nettie when she was 8 years old, which would have been about 1883 or so.  He died in Warren County sometime after 1900.

So, we would like to know if there are any records that would indicate who were the parents or at least the mother of John and Julian.  Were they and their mother bought by the Hawkins or could they have been owned by the Alstons who were the parents of James B. Hawkins' wife, Ariella Alston Hawkins, daughter of Willis Alston and Sallie Madeline Potts.

GEE, Carey (1823 - ) died sometime after 1895, but before 1900 in Matagorda County, Texas.

Carey was born in NC and according to the 1867 Voter Registration List, he had been in Texas for 35 years, which would make his arrival in Texas about 1832, which was earlier than James B. Hawkins, whose ranch Carey was found in 1867.

As an aside and interestingly enough, I can find no connection between the Pettways of Gees Bend and my Gee or Petteway relatives

Their children took the surname Russell and those found are: Oliver, Haywood, Junius, James H., Badger, Desmus, Oscar and Gabriel Russell, Jr.  Not sure why they chose their mother's surname however both farms and/or plantations where in close proximity to each other and in Warren County. Also many were affiliated with Burchett Chapel and resting in the cemetery there.

Any leads on anyone researching this line or descendants from any of the branches would be quite helpful !

Shearin and Susan Myrick were not married until 1858..... 7 years later.  I've heard it whispered over the years that her father was actually an "Ira Egerton"....but no proof.

Nancy Lilly Neal was the daughter of Thomas S. Neal and Nancy Thompson who were married in 1822 in Warren Co., NC.

During your research on the Lynch surname, have you encountered Phillip and/or Fannie Lynch?

II. Also looking for the names of the other children of my 4th g-gf James P. Powell (b. ca.1788 Warren Co., NC – d. 1853 Rodney, Jefferson Co., MS) – son of Cpl. John Powell and Mary Whitehurst. James P. Powell married in 1815 to Priscilla Sledge – daughter of James Sledge and Rebecca Person. James P. Powell may have had other wives as well (possibly Delilah Taylor).
Known children were:
(1) John J. Powell (ca.1822-1865) (my 3rd g-gf) who married Mary Jane Warner in Tensas Parish, LA. (Y-DNA and atDNA supports this).

Powell, and his father James P. Powell to Rankin, MS then Jefferson, MS. Would love to know death/burial info for him.
Other likely children of James P. Powell:
(3) James E. Powell (b. ca.1823 Warren Co., NC – d. 1865 Civil War, POW Prison Camp, Elmira, NY). Migrated to Tensas Parish, LA and was witness to John J. Powell’s wedding there in 1861). Was captured with John J. Powell by Union soldiers in Tensas Parish, LA. Both were transported to POW Prison Camp in Elmira, NY where they both died of pneumonia in 1865 – James E. in Jan. and John J. in February.
(4) Thomas H. Powell (b. ca. 1831 Warren Co., NC – d. ? MS). Migrated to Rankin Co., MS same time as his father and brothers (btwn 1840 & 1850) but was living there in 1850 in the Cooper household at age 19, not in the house of his father. He appears in the Oct 1865 Succession papers of my 3rd g-gf John J. Powell in Tensas Parish, LA in which he is appointed along with John J. Powell’s wife Mary Jane Warner as Under-Tutor and Tutrix respectively of John and Mary Jane’s two children, namely (1) my 2nd g-gf John Thomas “Thomas J.” Powell (5 Dec 1861 Tensas, LA – 13 Apr 1899 New Orleans) who married Sarah Virginia Alford and had issue (four); (2) Martha Elizabeth “Mattie” Powell who married Richard Lang Sutton and had issue (two).
