A Card
Mr Cornelius Myers would most respectfully announce to the citizens of Wilmington and vicinity that he has taken the store on north side of Market st, formerly occupied by S M West, which he is fitting up and will shortly open, with a new and splendid assortment of Hats and Caps, which he will sell very cheap for cash.
N. B. Being himself a practical Hatter, and having had several years experience in manufacturing - he feels confident that he can suit the taste of all those who will favor him with their patronage.
Wilmington, Oct 7th, 1844

Fifty Dollars Reward
Eloped from the subscriber, on the 1st instant, a negro man, named Bill, 26 years of age, about 5 feet 4 or 6 inches high, dark complextion, has an impediment in his speech, and a downward look when spoken to.
The said negro had on, when he left, a homespun suit, (a round-about and pants,) and cap, but other clothes with him.
It is thought he will attempt to pass as a freeman, under an assumed name, as William Hays, or Simmons. He is known to visit his old haunts in the neighborhood of his wife, who is owned by Mr Jos. Dunn, Duplin Co, and he no doubt ranges at times in the southern part of Wayne county, where he is, or has been, at work.
The above reward will be given for the apprehension and delivery of said negro to me, at Mr G W Bannerma's (sic) residence, Bladen county, or lodged in jail so I may get him again.

V R Peirson
Merchant Tailor
Wilmington NC
Has just returned from New York with a large and well selected stock of Fall and Winter Goods, now opening to which he solicits the attention and favor of a call from the public. Having had long experience in his business as Merchant Tailor, he flatters himself that his stock, selected by himself, and now opening, cannot be surpassed by any similar establishment in Wilmington or elsewhere.
The following are some of the goods now opening, viz:
Superfine French & English Black, Blue, Brown, Olive, and Invisible Green Broad Cloths, Pilot and Beaver Cloths, Plain and Fancy French and English Cassemeres of superior qualities, Sattinets of various colors and qualities, Kentucky Jeans, Vestings, of the very latest styles and patrons, consisting in part of rich French and English plain and cut silk Velvets, Toilnettes, Marseilles, Merinoes, etc. Also a full and general assortment of Gentlemen's Under Garments such as Linen and Cotton shirts, Under Shirts and Drawers of Silk, Merino, Buckskin and Cottonett; Hoisery of various qualities and descriptions, extra fancy, fancy and plain Silk, Satin and Mohair Scarfs, Cravats, Ties and Handkerchiefs, Suspenders of various qualities. Black, white, and colored kid, plain, figured and colored silk, silk and woollen, thibbet, and cotton Gloves. Also a full assortment of Hats:
Beaver and Moleskin, of the latest style and fashion, round and square crowned sporting Hats: blue and black cloth and glazed Silk Caps; Silk and Gingham Umbrellas. Indeed every article in his line, too numerous to mention as Merchant Tailor, to which as before observed, he solicits a call from the public, also a share of public patronage, and feels, as he ever shall, grateful for former favors conferred upon him.
In addition to the above, the subscriber has always on hand a large and general assortment of Ready Made Clothing, which will be sold at prices as low, and on as good terms, as can be purchased at any other establishment in Wilmington.
Mr H S Kelly has also recently returned from New York, where he spent two months during the summer for personally gaining and acquiring all the latest styles and systems of cutting, in which line, as Cutter, he has not his superior. He will continue to have charge of the Tailoring department. When in N. York I selected some of the best workmen that could be obtained, who have arrived. With the many advantages the subscriber has, the flatters himself that all work entrusted to his care will give entire satisfaction; should any article, when made, prove otherwise, the party is at liberty to return it on his hands.

In Salisbury, on the 19th ult. after a short illness, Mary Ann, wife of John W Ellis, Esq, aged 21 years; only child of Philo White, former editor of this paper. The intelligence of this interesting young lady's death, struck through my heart like a dagger of ice. A few weeks ago she stood a bride at the altar. But yesterday I saw her in the pride of youth and beauty by the side of her young husband, the very image of health and joyousness, with fair prospects of a long and happy life. But now that health-glowing cheek is pale in death, those beaming eyes are quenched forever, the shroud and winding sheet have displaced the bridal attire, and the name which so lately woke warm in the heart emotions of love and joy and pride is hushed or breathed softly as a name no longer of earth. We mourn not for the spotless of soul - for the innocent and pure, for we trust that angels hovering around have wooed a sister spirit from earth. But there is one over whom we shed the anguished tear, one who has painfully realized that love and death dwell in the same world. May that Providence which "tempereth the wind to the shorn lamb" so sanctify this affliction, that his wrung soul may be led to him who is alone able to afford consolation to woes for which earth has no comforter. - Ral. In this place on 7th inst. Wm S Page, of Bowdoinham (Me) 1st officer of brig Baltic, of Baltimore.
On the 30th of Nov at his residence in this county, after a long and painful illness, Mr John R Moore.
Few men have ever passed away from among the living more generally esteemed; strictly honest in all his dealing, and punctual in his engagements he united a benevolent and charitable disposition by which he was enabled to practice a commendable course of conduct with all those who came within his sphere of intercourse. No man was better beloved in his neighborhood; for he practiced virtue, benevolent, hospitality and charity. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and died exulting in the triumphs of the faith of Christ. "Whom to know aright is life everlasting." He has left a widow and five children to mourn his loss; but his loss is felt by his neighbours, friends and acquaintances, with a poignancy that cannot be described. When we record the death of such men, it is pleasing to have our hearts revived by this cheering scriptural promise, that all the faithful abide with our Heavenly Parent at whose right hand there are pleasures forever more.
