Col. Clarence Kaplan, U.S. Army, Retired, (90), passed away peacefully, Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at his Wilmington home. Col. Kaplan was the son of the late Wassel and Stella Kaplan. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife; Jean F. Kaplan. He is survived by two sons; Russell Kaplan and wife Elizabeth of Damascus, MD, Robert Kaplan and wife Jeanne of Leesburg, VA. Col. Kaplan was in service to his country for over thirty-seven years, and retired in Wilmington over twenty years ago.
The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Coble ard-Smith Oleander Chapel. There will be a graveside service with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

BOLIVIA -- Mr. Elijah G. (E.G.) Maggard, age 80, of Green Lewis Road, Bolivia, died Wednesday July 30, 2008.
Mr. Maggard was born in Hyden, Kentucky on March 29, 1928, and was the son of the late Robert Lee Maggard and Grace Nichols Maggard. He was preceded in death by his son, John Allen Maggard Sr. Mr. Maggard was a member of Mt. Carmel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Faye Maggard; his daughter, Barbara Maggard Robbins and husband Keith of Winnabow; stepson, Carl Dean Hewett and wife Wendy of Supply; grandchildren, Brandi Grace Maggard and John Allen Maggard Jr.; stepgrandchildren, Amanda Fowler and Bradley Hewett; stepgreat-grandchildren,
Moriah and Hannah Fowler; two brothers, Buddy Maggard of Bolivia and Wendell Maggard of TN; two sisters, Judy Caison of Bolivia and Juanita Maggard of Winnabow.
Funeral services will be held Saturday August 2, 2008, at 3pm at the chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service, Southport with Reverend Gary Hewett officiating. Burial will follow in the David R. Mercer Cemetery, Bolivia.

BOILING SPRING LAKES -- Deborah Denise Benson Worden, age 56, of Boiling Spring Lakes, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Deborah was born in Rowan County, NC, on December 21, 1951, and was the daughter of Robert F. Benson Sr. of Mocksville, NC, and the late Nell Allen Benson. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Gregory Benson. She was employed with ADM in Southport.
Survivors in addition to her father include her son, Seth Worden and wife Darlene of Supply; a grandson, Jacob Allen Worden; a brother, Robert F. Benson Jr. and wife indy of Mocksville; a sister, Bobbi Lynn Mullis and husband Tony of Mocksville; a sister-in-law, Kim Benson of Lexington.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 Friday evening at Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral Service. No other services will follow.

Sadie Ethel Sanders Akins, 91, of Holly Ridge died Friday August 1, 2008 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. A private graveside service will be held Wednesday August 6, 2008 at Topsail Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hampstead with Rev. Jesse Staton officiating. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Burros of Holly Ridge; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Akins; two sons, Bill Akins Jr. and Ray Akins.

Valerie Ann Burns of Leland , NC was unexpectedly taken from her family on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008.
Valerie was born in Hudson, NY and was the daughter of the late John Raymond Burns and Betty Ann Burns (Myshasko) of Hampstead, NC.
She is survived by two daughters Carri and Casey Burns of Wilmington, NC; her mother Betty of Hampstead; two sisters, Kim Akin of Plattsburgh, NY and Nan Burns of North Carolina; one granddaughter, Jacqulyne Burns; five nephews; John, Gary, Aaron, Chris and Shaun Akin of Plattsburgh, NY and brother in law, Jeff Berry of North Carolina.
After relocating from New York to North Carolina, with her hard work and dedication, she successfully established a thriving window cleaning business that she loved. Valerie enjoyed family nights, trips to the North Carolina mountains, where she panned for gold; crocheting; watching the NFL, especially the Dallas Cowboys, "The Boys."
She enjoyed capturing life's moments on her camera, buying little unexpected gifts for her family and late night snacks. She also enjoyed her vegetable garden where she would sit for hours and "watch it grow" and drinking "her" coffee. She also loved spending her time with her granddaughter "Jack-O-Lantern." She was proud of the fact that she had just taught her granddaughter how to ride her bike without training wheels for the very first time. She enjoyed the simple things in life.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm, on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
Services will be held in Hudson, New York by the McDonald Funeral Home, 886 Columbia St.

Howard Angus Hetzler, 90, of Lima, formerly of Tipp City, OH died August 1, 2008 at The Ridge at Shawnee in Lima, OH where he had resided for almost 8 years.
He was born May 30, 1918 in Shelby County, OH to Roy & Mary (Valentine) Hetzler who preceded him in death. On June 5, 1945 he married Elaine Carpenter Mack who died November 11, 1979. Mr. Hetzler retired as a purchasing agent from Tipp Machine and Tool and was a barber in Tipp City for several years before that. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ since putting on His Lord in baptism in 1978. He loved to sing and participated in several quartets. He also was a song leader for the church.
He loved sports, and when he was younger he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was gifted artistically. He used that gift to build furniture and cane chairs. He and his wife also enjoyed attending auctions and buying antiques, which they would bring home and refinish. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. Survivors include his daughter, Christy (Clyde) McCall of Lima, OH; a son, Terry Hetzler of St. Mary's, OH; a step-son, George Mack of Miami, OK; 7 grandchildren: Michael, Shannon, and Terry Hetzler; Jason (Heather) Thornton of Tulsa, OK, Jeremy (Jessica) Thornton of Broken Arrow, OK, Aaron McCall of Guadalajara, Mexico and Adam Clayton (Lindsay) Thornton of Lima, OH; step-grandchildren: Teresa Lynn Katzenbach, Penny Harris, C. Diane Gray, James Gregory and Charles Gregory; Clyde McCall, Jr. and Stacy McCall Loving. Also surviving are great-grandchildren: Eli, Julia, Elizabeth Kate, Elizabeth Mia, & Emma. He was preceded in death by an infant sister; a step-daughter, Marilyn Mack Pruett; and a great-granddaughter Jessica Thornton.
Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday, August 8, 2008 at Maple Hill Cemetery, S. Hyatt St., Tipp City, OH. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5-8 PM at the Frings & Bayliff Funeral Home, 327 S. Main St., Tipp City, OH 45371.

James Curtis Holdford, 86, of Wilmington, NC passed peacefully from this life on earth to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2008. Jim was born on November 23, 1921 in James Walker Memorial Hospital to James Alexander and Pearl Irene Walker Holdford. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Wells Holdford; son, James Robert Holdford of Wilmington, NC; sister, Hazel H. Lee; several nieces and nephews that he loved and appreciated very much. His friends were also cherished by their long association of many years.
Jim (Curtis) spent several years of earlier life in combat situations - World War II, Korea Peace Keeper, and Vietnam. He was reported missing in action in 1942, but had been rescued and served with the Marine Raiders on the Solomon Islands. He received numerous awards and medals during 27 years of honorable Military Service. Jim retired, rank of CW-4, United States Army, on July 31, 1969. Upon returning to civilian life, he attended school and after graduation began working for the health care industry.
In July 1986, he started his third career as a volunteer with New Hanover County Department of Aging and Senior Center and other county agencies. Jim especially enjoyed the camaraderie of other volunteers, staff personnel and persons served. He continued these enjoyable duties for 19 years.
The family of James Curtis greatly appreciates the attention and medical care given to him by the doctors, nurses and staff in their office and at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the compassionate care of the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. The support of our friends and neighbors will always be honored and remembered by his survivors.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Coble-Ward Smith, officiated by Pastor Donnie Lovette and Chaplain Sweetie Francis. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Wayne Brantley Pridgen, 62, of Wilmington, died Thursday, July 31, 2008.
Wayne was born November 27, 1945, in Washington, D.C., son of the late Brantley "B.C." Claxton Pridgen and Frances "Fran" Johnson Pridgen. His wife, Bonnie Grissom Pridgen, preceded him in death.
Mr. Pridgen was loved by all, and he was very proud of his children. In the early 70's, he established Wayne Electric Company, and still owned and operated that business at the time of his death. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
He is survived by three sons, Wayne Brantley Pridgen, II and wife, Tonya, Clayton Lee Pridgen, and Jason Stewart Pridgen, all of Wilmington; three grandchildren; two brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be 10am Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at Oakdale Cemetery, with Rev. May Craven officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Shirley Helms Shepard, 90, died Friday August 1, 2008 at home after a lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held at Ogden Baptist Church on Sunday August 3, 2008 at 3pm. A second memorial service will be held at Wingate Baptist Church in Wingate, N.C. at a later date.
She was born February 11, 1918 in Union County, N.C. the daughter of the late O. Talmadge and Mary Bivens Helms. She was the widow of Clarence Lorin Shepard, former owner of Mason's Marina.
She is survived by two daughters, Jeannie S. Register and Betty S. Arlart (Jim), both of Wilmington, N.C., two sisters, Kate Kelly of Davidson, N.C. and Jean Myers (Harry) of Monroe, N.C. three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a special brother and sister-in-law, Ricky and Brenda Shepard.

Dorothy Mae "Dot" Stuart, 77, of Wilmington, NC, was promoted to Glory Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Mariner Health Care. She was born on April 23, 1931 in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of the late Norman Stuart, Sr. and Thelma Louise Revelle Stuart. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Norman Stuart, Jr.
Dot was a member of numerous clubs and organizations in the Wilmington area. She was a member of the Salvation Army since 1946, a member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, a former resident of Solomon Towers, a volunteer with New Hanover Hospital and New Hanover County Agricultural Extension Office, and the Homemakers Club.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Katherine "Kit" Hobbs and husband Eddie of Kenansville, NC, Norma Lee Chestnutt and husband Danny, Jamie Mae Kreuger and husband Steve, all of Wilmington, NC; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and a sister, Doris Midgett of Sneads Ferry, NC.
A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Monday, August 4, 2008 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel by Majors Butch and Carolyn Mallard. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
The family wishes to express a special note of thanks to the residents, staff, volunteers, and friends of Mariner Health Care, which was her home for the past four years.

Jackson Johnson Taylor, 89, of Mechanicsville, VA died Thursday, July 31, 2008.
Born at "Shrub Hill," his family's farm in Winnabow, NC, on Nov. 20, 1918, he was the son of Edwin Wellington Taylor and Alice Jackson Johnson Taylor. He graduated from Bolivia High School in 1935 and received his B.S. degree in physics from the University of Richmond in 1942. During World War II, he served aboard the Duxbury Bay as Lieutenant JG, USNR, Fleet Air Wing One, receiving two Battle Stars in the Okinawa campaign. In 1948, he completed his M.S. degree at Cornell University and began his 38-year career as Professor of Physics at the University of Richmond, serving as Chairman of the Physics Department for 21 years. Admired by hundreds of students as an inspired and outstanding teacher, he was named a UR Distinguished Educator in 1976. Professor Taylor was an officer and member of numerous professional science associations.
A lifelong Presbyterian, Mr. Taylor was ordained as Deacon at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Winnabow at the age of 17 and subsequently served as Elder or Clerk of Session at three churches in Richmond and on various presbytery and synod committees. Since 2002, Mr. Taylor had been an active member of the Covenant
Woods community in Mechanicsville, VA. He returned often to his childhood home in Brunswick County, where he enjoyed family gatherings in Winnabow and Oak Island.
Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Beaman Taylor, daughters Ellen T. Sisson, New Canaan, CT, Frances T. Anton (James), Durham, NC, Nancy T. Bodge (Kevin), Atlantic Beach, FL, step-son, Thomas C. Hesch (Susan), Richmond, grandchildren, Jack, Mary and Frances Sisson, John and Peter Anton, Charlie, Edwin and Alice Bodge, and Phoebe, Greyson and Zander Hesch, sister, Helen F. Taylor, of Winnabow, NC and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his first wife Mary Ellen Trimmer Taylor, his sister Julia White and his brothers Edwin and Charles Taylor of Winnabow. A memorial service will be held at Fairfield Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville on Monday, August 4. Burial in Richmond, VA will be private.

Mary T. Zinn known as Teri to her friends and Grammy to her grandchildren passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on July 31, 2008 at Cape Fear Medical Center.
She was born on January 2, 1927, the daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Aieta. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, her son, Robert Johnson, her sister Antoinette Lombardo and her brother Philip Aieta.
Teri recently relocated from Bellingham, WA. to be close to family in Wilmington, N.C. Prior to moving to Bellingham, she spent a number of years in Clearwater and Dunedin, FL where she spent much of her time volunteering for church and civic duties. She is survived by her son Warren Johnson of Bullard, TX, sister Catherine Stanavage of Union City, TN, stepsons John Zinn of West Hartford, CT and Robert Zinn of Hamden,
CT, and nine grandchildren.

Carolyn Orr Blake, age 66, of Currie, died peacefully on Sunday, August 3, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. Mrs. Blake was born April 21, 1942, in Pender County to Mildred and J. W. Orr, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis K. Blake; son, Michael P. Jackson and father, J. W. Orr, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Canady (Paul) and Lisa Wells (Whren); grandsons, Mason Canady and JonMichael and Jay Peedin; mother, Mildred Malpass Orr; sister, Peggy Armstrong (Buzz) and several nieces and nephews.  Family was very important to Carolyn as she cared for her parents until she became too consumed with her own illness. She also had a love for singing, music and crafts. Being very involved with her church, Carolyn served her church well with gladness in many capacities.
The family will receive visitors 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Blake residence.
Mrs. Blake will lie in state for viewing on Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at New Beginnings Community Church (formerly Myrtle Grove P.F.W.B. Church). Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at New Beginnings Community Church (formerly Myrtle Grove P.F.W.B. Church) with The Rev. Ray Davis officiating. Mr. James "Jim" Henry Carico, 83, died Friday, August 1, 2008, at The Brian Center in Lexington.
He was born January 6, 1925, in Gaston County, the son of the late Monroe and Belvie Carico.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mildred Smith Carico; his son, David E. Carico, and his sisters, Myrtle Leonhardt and Martha Isenhour.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Gloria Mills and husband, Robert of Wilmington; his son, Kenneth Carico and wife, Geni of Trinity; four grandchildren, Shannon C. Byrd, Kristen C. Varner and husband, Kevin, David Carico and Sean Mills; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Byrd, Adam Byrd, Aaron Byrd, Morgan Carico, Kayla Varner and Kira Varner; one sister, Virgie Absher of Bessemer City and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a Veteran of WWII serving with the 87th Army Division in the Central European Campaign. He was a Bronze Star recipient. He worked as a carpenter retiring from the Forsyth County School System.
When asked about him being a carpenter he would tell you that there was only one carpenter, and that was Jesus Christ and without him our lives meant nothing.

Ralph Daniel Drew Sr. born October 2nd, 1912, in Rose Hill, NC; preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth, son Ralph Drew Jr, and grandson Mark Drew. Survived by son Glenn W Drew and wife Maureen of Wilmington, son Gary M Drew, also of Wilmington and daughter-in-law Shirley Drew, wife to deceased son, Ralph D Drew Jr. Grandchildren are Greg, and family of New Jersey, Robyn Kardos and husband Joseph and family of Wilmington, Sean Drew of Vail Colorado, Holly Drew and Emily Drew of Connecticut.
There are also three great-grandchildren. He is survived by an older sister, Mildred Teachey, still living in Rose Hill, and a brother, Graham Drew of Wilmington.
He had a long and productive life and operated his own country store for more than 40 years in Porters Neck. He was a lifelong member of the Shriners' and an avid gardener and reader.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 6th starting at 10:00am at Andrews Mortuary in Hampstead. Family will receive friends prior to a memorial service in the Mortuary. Private internment will follow at Barlow Vista Baptist Church Cemetery, Hampstead, NC. No flowers. Memorials may be made either to Hospice or the Shriners.

James Curtis Holdford, 86, of Wilmington, NC, passed peacefully from this life on earth to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 1, 2008. Jim was born on November 23, 1921, in James Walker Memorial Hospital to James Alexander and Pearl Irene Walker Holdford.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Wells Holdford; son, James Robert Holdford of Wilmington, NC; sister, Hazel H. Lee; several nieces and nephews that he loved and appreciated very much. His friends were also cherished by their long association of many years.
Jim (Curtis) spent several years of earlier life in combat situations - World War II, Korea Peace Keeper, and Vietnam. He was reported missing in action in 1942, but had been rescued and served with the Marine Raiders on the Solomon Islands. He received numerous awards and medals during 27 years of honorable Military Service.
Jim retired, rank of CW-4 United States Army on July 31, 1969. Upon returning to civilian life, he attended school and after graduation began working for the health care industry.
In July 1986, he started his third career as a volunteer with New Hanover County Department of Aging and Senior Center and other county agencies. Jim especially enjoyed the camaraderie of other volunteers, staff personnel and persons served. He continued these enjoyable duties for 19 years.
The family of James Curtis greatly appreciates the attention and medical care given to him by the doctors, nurses and staff in their office and at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the compassionate care of the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. The support of our friends and neighbors will always be honored and remembered by his survivors.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home, 3915 Oleander Drive. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Coble-Ward Smith, officiated by Pastor Donnie Lovette and Chaplain Sweetie Francis. Violet May Ott (Vi), 91, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of Johnstown, PA, went to be with her Lord and husband of 65 years on Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Davis Health Center in Wilmington, NC.
Violet was born May 19, 1917, in Johnstown, PA and was the daughter of the late Merle Gaston and Edna Gaston. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Wilmot G. (Bud) Ott and brother Kenneth Gaston.
She is survived by her son Larry, married to Linda Nelson of Wilmington, NC;and brother Richard M. Gaston, Sr. of Osterburg, PA; grandchildren Craig Ott, Chester, VA, and Pamela McGraw wife of Michael McGraw, Chester, VA; and Lisa Sigmon of Hickory, NC; great-grandchildren, Chad and Steven McGraw and Anna and Joshua Sigmon; also three nephews, five nieces and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.
Violet retired from Penn Traffic Co. in Johnstown where she was the Manager of the Stationary Department and a member of their Quarter Century Club. She was a Charter member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Johnstown; former Past Worthy Matron of Anna L. Windolph Chapter No. 495 Order of Eastern Star. She is a current member of the Lutheran Church of Reconciliation in Wilmington.

BURGAW -- Dale Lee Thompson Sr., age 75, of Burgaw, died Sunday August 3, 2008, at Pender Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 13, 1932, in Traer, Iowa, son of the late Alexander and Mary Thompson. Mr. Thompson served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps retiring after twenty years as a Staff Sergeant. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Beasley Thompson; a son Dale L. Thompson Jr. of Rocky Point; two daughters, Terri Dirkse and husband Dave of Winter Haven Fl. Kathy Batchelor and husband Allen of Castle Hayne; seven grandchildren, Dale Lee, Josh, Matt and Johnathon Thompson, Kyle Venters, Rob Batchelor and wife Kele, Lisa Clemmons and husband Lavelle; two great-grandchildren; a brother Glen Thompson of Iowa; two sisters, Ethel Brooks of Powell MO., and Bernice Thompson of Monet MO.; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday August 5, 2008 at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Reverend Phillip Jones will officiate. Burial will follow. Lula Wilkins Anast, 85, of Wilmington, passed away on August 2, 2008.
Born in Danville, VA, in 1922, her parents were the late Rufus William Wilkins and Hattie Hundley Wilkins. Lula and her late husband, Nick, owned and operated restaurants in Danville, VA, and Greensboro, NC, for thirty years. Lula worked for Cape Fear Hospital in Wilmington as Food Service Director for 19 years.
Lula is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Nickie) Shiver and husband, Rick; and grandchildren, Matthew Shiver and wife, Laurel, and Joshua Shiver, all of Wilmington; and four legged babies, cats Peaches and Miss Gotrocks.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday in Oleander Memorial Gardens, officiated by Rev. Bill Carne.

Emma Sue Hawes Crocker of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, died Monday, August 4, 2008 at The University of Chapel Hill's Medical Cardiac Transplant Unit, Chapel Hill North Carolina at the age of 62.
She was born August 22, 1945 to the late Dr. C.F. Hawes and Mary Emma Hawes in Rose Hill, North Carolina. Emma Sue was also preceded in death by her brother, C.F. Hawes, Jr. of Rose Hill, North Carolina. She is survived by her husband, Newland Kay Crocker of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina and two sons, Charles Newland Crocker of Wilmington, North Carolina and his wife, Ashleigh, and Dr. William Daniel Crocker of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and his wife, George-Ann. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Emma Blythe Crocker, a brother, Mr. David Hillis Hawes of Raleigh, North Carolina, and his family, a sister, Ms. Bettie Hawes Meyer of Rose Hill, North Carolina, and her family, and the family of C.F. Hawes, Jr.

Lucie F. Harrell, went to be with her Heavenly Father on August 5, 2008 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer since May 3, 2005. Her loving husband and family were by her side every step of the way.
She was born in Greensboro, NC on August 5, 1939, the daughter of the late Claude H. Fryar, M.D. and Lucie H. Fryar.
Mrs. Harrell was a member of her beloved Wesleyan Chapel United Methodist Church, a 1957 Graduate of New Hanover High School and received a Secretarial Degree from East Carolina College. She retired after 30 years of service in State and local governments, which began with the N.C. State Ports Authority, City of Wilmington,
and New Hanover County where she worked for 23 years as Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners. She enjoyed her work and during the years formed many close friends. She served on the Board of Directors of the N.C. Association of County Clerks for several years and was its President in 1986-87. She was the first recipient of the Howard Holly Outstanding Clerk of the Year Award for the State of North Carolina in 1987. During her tenure as Clerk, she worked as a advocate for the elderly in nursing homes and served as a member of the Elder Rights Planning Committee for the Raising Older Adult Rights Project, an initiative of the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services in 1997-98, and received special recognition from Elderhaus, Wilmington's Adult Day Care Center, in 2000 for her professionalism. On August 4th, 2008 the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution that Conference Room 601 of the New Hanover County Government Center be named in honor of Lucie F. Harrell in special recognition of her exemplary dedication to New Hanover County and its people.
She is survived by her husband, J. Don Harrell, beloved son Randall B. Smith of Raleigh, NC, as well as three wonderful sisters, Ida F. Singleton and husband, Oliver of Ellijay GA, Frances F. DeVane of Wilmington, NC, and Elizabeth (Betty) F. Kurtz and husband, Roland of Thomasville, GA; nieces, Beth Justice and husband, Robbie and Ashley DeVane all of Wilmington, NC, and Debbie Leonard and husband, Bill of Tallahassee, FL; nephews James R. White, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Jacksonville Beach, FL and John Kurtz of Clearwater, FL.

Ronald Nelson Heath, 66, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of New Bern, died peacefully at his residence, Tuesday, August 5, 2008 after an extended illness.
Nelson was born August 1, 1942, son of the late Arthur Clarence Heath and Cora Mercer Heath.
Nelson graduated from New Bern High School. He was employed with Craven Foundry and later employed for twenty-seven years with Merritt-Holland Gas Company (Linde Gases of the Southeast), as an Inventory Purchasing Manager. Mr. Heath had also been employed by Lowes Home Improvement and most recently by Corning Incorporated, until his illness required him to retire.
In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by two brothers, Jonie Lee Heath and Leslie Bryan Heath. Nelson was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Judy Corbett Heath; two daughters, Rhonda Heath Coltraine and husband Tommy of New Bern, and Pamela Heath Gray and husband Dennis of Vanceboro; and a granddaughter, Erin Ashley Gray of Vanceboro.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Road, Wilmington, NC with the Rev. Jimmy Mercer officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour.

TRENTON -- Verna Belle Lowery, 96 of 3853 Highway 58 North, Trenton died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston after a brief illness. She was born April 22, 1912 to the late John Raymond and Cattie Gilbert Lowery and grew up in the Chinquapin Community in Jones County. She graduated from Trenton High School and was also a graduate of ECTC (now ECU) with a degree in Home Economics and Science. She taught Vocational Home Economics at Dover and Williamston High Schools, after which she joined the North Carolina Agriculture Extension Service. She first served as associate agent in Pitt County and then as extension agent in New Hanover County for 22 years.
Miss Lowery is survived by two sisters, Louise L. Williams of Kinston, and Rena L. Manning of Greenville, one brother, Woodrow Wilson "Skin" Lowery, Sr. of Trenton, many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Garner Funeral Home in Kinston with Reverends Carolyn Roy, Tim Nichols and Ray Brooks officiating.
Burial will take place in Trenton City Cemetery in Trenton. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Garner Funeral Home and other times at her home.
Throughout her entire life Miss Lowery was an active member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church until sickness slowed her down. She taught the Addie Heart Sunday School Class for many years, was chairperson of the Council of Ministry, and was president of the United Methodist Women. Also, she served on the Board of Trustees, was chairperson of the Building Committee when Shady Grove Church was remodeled, and was very active in landscaping the church grounds. In 1978 she received a Life membership in the local United Methodist Women and was named Woman of the Year by this same organization. Miss Lowery was Church Historian and she wrote the history of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in 1984.
During Miss Lowery's professional career, she was active in county, district, state and national organizations of the Agriculture Extension Service, serving in various capacities as state president of the N.C. Extension Agent Association and as the representative of the association at national meetings in Chicago, Illinois, Fort Worth, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota. In addition, she was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the State Employees Association of NC and the National Association of Extension Home Economics.
Over the years, Miss Lowery received numerous recognitions and awards. In 1956 she was featured in the "Wilmington Star-News" for her leadership as an extension agent not only in New Hanover County but also at the district, state and national levels. In 1957 she was President of the North Carolina Home Agent Association. In 1958 she received the Distinguished Service Award -- the highest honor the national association bestows on a member. In 1962 she was named an Honorary Admiral of the "USS North Carolina Battleship."
In speaking of Miss Lowery when she retired from extension in 1973 in Wilmington, Mrs. C.M. Foster wrote in her book, "I Had to Climb That Tree," "... she was quiet, modest, nselfish and never personally sought the limelight -- rather she worked hard to give others an opportunity to excel. She would accept any responsibility -- one of those people who give of themselves. Along the way, she touched the lives of countless individuals and left much of herself behind."

Margaret Cathleen Paulson, of Wilmington, died Monday, August 04, 2008 at Liberty Commons.
Mrs. Paulson attended Ogden Baptist Church.
She was born in Meadowlands, MN, March 7, 1921 the daughter of the late Charles Frederick and Lydia Marie Maki Palmer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence B. Paulson.
Mrs. Paulson was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Newman and husband Gary of Hampstead, NC, her son, Bruce Paulson of Wilmington, and her granddaughter, Nicole Newman of Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Friday, August 8, 2008 at Andrews Hampstead Chapel with Dr. Don Cashwell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Vincent Rzany, 77, of Wilmington, passed away Monday, August 4, 2008 at Cape Fear Hospital.
His son, Raymond Rzany, preceded him in death.
Vincent is survived by his wife of 56 years, Loretta Rzany; one son Richard Rzany and wife Cathy; two daughters, Barbara Turney and husband Steve and Gina Savino and husband Steve; one sister, Anna Rzany and seven grandchildren. Carolyn Staut, (nee Clifford), of Egg Harbor Township, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 5, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband Harry, her parents Roland and Josephine Clifford, her sister Ruth Humphries, grandsons William and Timothy Atack, and her son-in-law David Atack.
Carolyn and her husband opened two family businesses in the 1950's: The Float, an ice cream store and restaurant, and Staut's Arco. She was a school board member for Egg Harbor Township during the 1950's and 1960's. For many years she served as Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for Friendship Bible Church.
She was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church in English Creek. Carolyn was a retired school bus driver for the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and doing needlework and was known as the "Cross Lady" because she made thousands of pocket crosses to give away as a testimony for her Lord. She always enjoyed visits from her family and friends. Carolyn considered herself rich and truly blessed because of her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she dearly loved and prayed for daily.
Carolyn is survived by her daughters, Martha "Mar Jo" Atack of Egg Harbor Township and Marian and husband Joseph Ingemi, III of Egg Harbor Township. She is also survived by grandsons Robert Atack of Egg Harbor Township; James and wife Kathy Atack of Oak Island, North Carolina; Joseph and wife Maree Ingemi, IV of Egg Harbor Township; Jeff and wife Tina Ingemi of Marshfield, Maine and Joshua Ingemi of Mays Landing.
In addition, Carolyn is survived by great-grandchildren Heather, Michele, Samantha, Brielle, Sara, Robert, Christopher and Brian Atack and Hannah, Danielle "DD", Jasmine and Joshua "JJ" Ingemi. She is also survived by her brother Alvah and wife Dorothy Clifford of Janesville, Wisconsin; her best friend and "sister" Dora Getty of Egg Harbor Township and several nieces and nephews. Carolyn will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 12 noon at Asbury United Methodist Church in English Creek, NJ. Friends may call from 11am until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Asbury United Methodist Church or Scullville Bible Church in Egg Harbor Township. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Evelyn Conaway Marker, of Salem, Oregon, died July 7, 2008, in Salem.
Born August 29, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Eva M. Conaway of Wilmington, N.C. She graduated from New Hanover High School, a member of the National Honor Society, class of 1937.
Evelyn was the oldest of nine children. She was preceded in death by her two sons. She is survived by two brothers: James E. Conaway (wife Dorothy) of Fayetteville, N.C., and Donald P. Conaway (wife Doris) of Wilmington; one sister, Eva C. Johnston of Wilmington, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren. The family held private burial services on August 1, 2008, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wilmington, N.C.

SOUTHPORT -- Robert Julian Vig, 68 of St. James Plantation, NC lost his battle with brain cancer and passed peacefully from this life on earth to be with his Lord and Savior on August 6, 2008.
Bob is survived by his best friend and wife of 46 years, Emly Ann Vig; sister Phlayne Olson (Gerald), brother Michael Vig (Linda) and brother, Joseph Vig (Patti). Beloved father to David Vig (Encarni), Dr. Daniel Vig (Amy), and Kathy Fohr. Adored grandfather to Michael, Joseph, Nikole, Zachary and Ellie. Bob is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was born January 2, 1940 in Morris, MN to the late Julian and Martha Vig and raised in Veblen, SD. He attended South Dakota State University, where he met his wife, Emly and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He and Emly moved to Wisconsin to begin a 32-year career with Vilter Mfg. They raised their family in Big Bend, WI, in a small town atmosphere. Bob was active in the Lion's Club and at church. He also
enjoyed shooting pool, hunting, camping, canoeing, and playing golf. In 1994 they moved to Cary, NC for a new job opportunity with Morris & Assoc. They adapted quickly to their new southern home and made many new friends while keeping their old friendships as well. Bob worked in industrial refrigeration for 45 years and was well respected worldwide for his expertise and honesty. The couple moved to St. James in 2006 to live out their retirement years where together they enjoyed golfing, fishing, and boating.
The family of Robert greatly appreciates the attention and compassionate care given to him by the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Coastal Companions. They are forever grateful for the outstanding medical care he received from Duke University Medical Center/Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Rex Hospital, Dosher Hospital, Hanover Medical Specialists, and South Atlantic Radiation Oncology. The excellent care of his doctors will never be forgotten - Robert Lacin, Kenneth Zeitler, David Reardon, Terry Pieper, William McNulty, and Martin Meyerson. The generosity and compassion displayed by their family, church members, friends and neighbors will always be remembered and deeply cherished.

She was born in Brazil, Indiana on April 30, 1919, the daughter of the late Joseph Clifford Ervin and Emma Wetnight Ervin. Prior to moving to Rocky Mount, Mrs. Mitscher had lived for many years in Lawrenceville, IL and also in Wilmington, NC.
Mrs. Mitscher was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Wilmington, NC. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Carl Frederick Mitscher in 2004.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Clara S. Carter ; son, J. Brent Carter of Raleigh and two grandsons, Jared Carter and Joey Riccio. He is also survived by three sisters, Doris Carter of Calabash, Frances Brown of Supply and Shirley Carter of Calabash. Joe leaves behind close family members, wonderful friends and many
constituents in the North Carolina educational community.
Joseph B. Carter was born on March 4, 1931 on a small farm close to Calabash, NC. His life was patterned after deep religious beliefs and he always exemplified Christian values in the treatment of everyone around him. Joe graduated from Appalachian State University in 1957 with his Bachelors Degree of Science. He continued his
education at NC State University in 1957 obtaining his Masters Degree and Doctorate in Education. He served his country in the North Carolina National Guard and retired Sergeant Major. Joe was the founding President of Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC from 1979 to 1986. He received the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine award in October 1982. Joe committed his entire career to the advancement of education in North Carolina as a school teacher, government employee and community college leader.
Beyond his unwavering commitment to family, Joe enjoyed the bounty of the ocean and spent many days on the water, fishing, oystering and setting his nets. He loved to fix anything and always had the knowledge to tackle any project from home building to mechanical restorations. His resourcefulness only complemented his many talents
and no matter what the challenge, he rose to the occasion. His spirit will live on foreverthrough the family and friends he leaves behind.
Funeral services will be held Monday August 11, 2008 at 3:00 pm at the Brunswick Community College Odell Williamson Auditorium with Reverend Dennis Williams officiating.

Betty B. Foster, 72, of the Bayshore community of Wilmington, NC went to her heavenly home on Friday August 8, 2008 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter after a courageous battle with non-smoking lung cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Raymond L Bishop, Sr. and Lona Mae Maness, beloved sister, Peggy B. Williams and a brother Raymond L. Bishop, Jr. (Sonny)
Surviving are her husband of 54 years Jerry W. Foster and cherished daughter Amee F. Stewart and husband Greg of Sophia NC., half sister Joyce L. Dunn, special niece Pam Robbins and husband Dan of Raleigh, NC, brother-in-law Vance Williams of Wilmington and nephew David Bishop of Florida.

Mrs. Beatrice Irene Johnson, 77, died August 8, 2008 in Wilmington, NC. Mrs. Johnson was born on August 29, 1930, near Goldsboro, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Heber Smith and Lois Worrell Smith Davis.
Mrs. Johnson grew up in Hood Swamp, NC and came to Wilmington as a teenager. She married James T. Johnson on October 26, 1947 in Conway, South Carolina.
During their marriage Irene enjoyed working with "J.T." and his father Ernest Johnson at the Johnson Trim Shop on 306 Castle Street. Mrs. Johnson will be remembered as a devoted, caring and loving mother. She enjoyed family gatherings and the sharing of her special home made corn bread. As time brought changes, she began working for Krispy Kreme, where she eventually met her long time friend Otto Skipper. Together they operated the "Corner Grocery" at 3rd and Castle Street.
Mrs. Johnson leaves behind her special friend and great companion, her beautiful Pomeranian "Susie." Mrs. Johnson is survived by a daughter, Jackie J. Kendall and husband Tom, two sons, James T. Johnson Jr. and wife Tanya, Ty Johnson and wife Kristi. Three granddaughters, Tonya Hartsell, Traci Beattie, Tammi Gregory, two grandsons, Kameron Johnson and his mother Lisa, Jamie Johnson and six great-granddaughters.

Bernard Emmitt King, of Wilmington, died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at his residence.
He was born in Jacksonville, FL, June 7, 1915, the son of the late Luby Harper and Pearl Walton King. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Winifred Capps King.
Mr. King was retired from Bell South after many years. He is survived by his four children; Bernard E. King, Jr and wife Patty of Laurinburg, NC, Carol Elizabeth King, Teresa King Smith and husband David, and Sherry King, all of Wilmington, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, and a sister, Faye K. Fennell of Jacksonville, FL.

Clayton George Lewis, 68, of Winnabow, NC, died Thursday, August 7, 2008, at his residence.
He was born in Dixon, NC, September 27, 1939, son of the late George Howard Lewis and Kitty Mae Covil Lewis.
Mr. Lewis was a Vietnam Veteran having served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason, and attended Town Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving is his wife, Carole Dubberly Lewis; children, Crystal Floyd of Greensboro, NC, Darryl Lewis and wife Jeanie of Williamsburg, VA, Steve Lewis of Lexington, NC, and Wendy Champion and husband David of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Mandy Barden and husband Ryan, Trey Floyd, Chad Floyd, Austin Lewis, Kelci Lewis, Noah Lewis, Josh Champion, and Zack Champion; one great-grandchild, Ashton Barden; a brother, Gordon Lewis and wife Phyllis; and a host of loved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Stacy Lewis and John Troy Lewis.

Franklin D. R. Lewis, affectionately known as "Buddy", died Friday, August 8, 2008 in Richmond, VA.
He was born in Pender County, NC on May 5, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents David Jasper Lewis and Eva Horrell Lewis, six siblings, and a grand daughter, baby girl Aliston.
He was a veteran of the US Air Force and has been a operations manager in the distribution and warehousing industry for more than 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, travel, and home improvement projects.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Lee Lewis of Powhatan, VA; son, Jonathan D. Lewis and wife Kimberly Lewis of Wilmington; daughter, Dallas R. Davis and husband Mark A. Davis of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Autumn B. Lewis and Lagan R. Lewis, treasured friend and nephew, James A. Cain of Kure Beach, NC, brothers and sisters, Virginia Gantt, Elsie Miles, Mavis Gore, Jackie Esmiol and husband Danny, Buck Lewis, Billy Lewis, and Debbie Watson and husband Eddie.

Makayla Marie Read, 5, of Wilmington, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.
Makayla was born April 8, 2003, the daughter of Mitchell and Kelly Read. From birth her struggle with Cockayne Syndrome showed her strength and courage and taught us lessons that we will hold forever in our hearts.
Makayla was a special little girl who touched the heart of everyone who met her. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sister Kylie, her grandparents, Paul and Madelyn Read, and Tim and Ann Curtis; her uncles and aunts, Brenden Read, Michael and Melissa Baldemor, Andrew and Amy Beth Knowlton, Alesia Read, and Matt Curtis; and her cousins, Devyn, Brody, Kelsea, James Paul, Zachary, Sophia, Alexis, and William.
A funeral mass will be offered by Monsignor Matt Hendrick on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 11 AM, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Wilmington.

Patricia was born in New Hanover County to the late Myrtle Reynolds and Wilbur Powell.

WILSON - Ann Barkley Ellis, 85, died Sunday, August 10, 2008.
She was preceded in death by husband, Archie K. Ellis in November 2007.
Ann was an avid golfer and enjoyed following the activities of her grandchildren. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the YMCA and had served on the board of the Wilson Country Club and Greenfield School.
The funeral will be Wednesday, 11:00 AM, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. William Nickels. A time of visiting and sharing will be at the church immediately following the funeral.
She is survived by her daughter, Gina Ellis Minton (Wes) of Raleigh; son, Arch K. Ellis, Jr. (Adair) of Wilmington; grandchildren, Ellis Edwards "Ward" Minton, Elizabeth Barkley Minton, A.K. Diane Haskins, age 57, of Wilmington died Sunday August 10, 2008.
She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 24, 1951. Her father, Vincent A. Schilens, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Dale Haskins; three children, Heather Gallagher of Youngstown, Ohio, Ian Haskins of Wilmington and Hayley Haskins of Wilmington. Grandchildren, Devan, Conner, and Shaun Gallagher. Her mother, Kathleen Schilens of Ohio; and her siblings, Donna, Vincent, Timothy, Kathy and Teresa.
Diane was a Registered Nurse specializing in geriatric care. She was most recently the Director of Risk Management with Liberty Health Care Systems in Wilmington. Prior to moving to Wilmington she served as Vice President, Administrator and Director of Nursing for Avalon Health Care in Pennsylvania.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6 to8 pm Tuesday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.
Celebration of life ceremony will be held 10 am Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 S. College Rd., Wilmington. Burial will be in Oleander Memorial Gardens.

Layton Marcus "Sweet Lips" McGugan, 84, of Wilmington passed away on August 10, 2008. Born in Smithfield in 1923, his parents were the late Layton McGugan and Anne Marie Gue'. Marcus was a WWII veteran and a recipient of the Silver Star. A resident of Wilmington since 1962, Marcus retired from the NC State Department of Revenue. Winter Park Baptist Church was the church home where he was an avid attendee and choir member for 45 years. He played trombone in high school and later in life acquired his name "Sweet Lips" from the Dixieland Jazz Band of the Lower Cape Fear where he performed for approximately 25 to 30 years. Marcus was also an avid golfer.
Marcus is survived by his wife of sixty years, Willa C. McGugan; daughters, Marcia Kay McGugan and Teresa (Terry) Lynn McGugan; brother, William B. McGugan and wife, Emily, of Fayetteville, NC; sister, Anne Marie Downing of Raleigh, NC. In addition to his parents, Marcus was predeceased by three brothers, John Gue' McGugan, Lanier McGugan and Joseph McGugan.

KINSTON - Born in Raleigh, NC October 7, 1929, Betsey Mewborn lived most of her life in Kinston, NC. She married Thomas R. "Dick" Mewborn in 1953. She died in Wilmington at her daughter's home after a long illness. Betsey was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Mewborn.
She is survived by a son, Thomas R. Mewborn Jr. of Fairfax, VA, a daughter, Catherine Lang Mewborn of Wilmington, NC, a grandson, Thomas Noah Mewborn, and two granddaughters, Caitlin Melissa Mewborn and Jessica Elisabeth Mewborn.
Betsey was a graduate of Grainger High School and Converse College. She was a master embroiderer in the Embroiderer's Guild of New Bern. Betsey also served as the moderator of the Presbyterian Women's Organization.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston from 5:30 until 7:30. A memorial service will be held Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Kinston at 11:00 AM following a private graveside service. A reception will be held at the Kinston Country Club following the service. Maurice Anthony DeSisto "Tony", 86, of Wilmington, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center.
Tony was born September 19, 1921, in Waltham, MA, son of the late Pasquale DeSisto and Beatrice Nora Benotti DeSisto. A brother, Joseph DeSisto, and a sister, Marianne Muscato, preceded him in death.
Mr. DeSisto was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. Tony graduated from Waltham High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and was a Disabled American Veteran.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Mazzacone DeSisto; brother, Albert DeSisto (Anna) of Sun City, CA; sister, Alice Morreale (Joseph) of Marlboro, MA; sister-in-law, Lucy M. Nelson-Muoio (Alfred) of Wilmington, NC; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7pm to 9pm Friday, August 15, 2008, at Andrews Valley Chapel.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be 11am Saturday, August 16, 2008, at St. Mark Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Matthew Hendrick officiating.

Mrs. Mary Ann Entrekin, aged 88, of Supply, died Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at Brunswick Community Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 PM, Friday, August 15th, 2008 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Mrs. Entrekin was born January 23, 1920 in Jefferson County, Alabama, a daughter of the late Michael Carl and Beulah Hinds Cox.

FLORA ELLEN SMALL LEE, 69, of Winnabow, NC, died Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
Born on January 8, 1939 in Horry County, SC, she was the daughter of the late Manning and Ima Miller Small.
Mrs. Lee is survived by her husband Thomas A. Lee of Winnabow; three sons, Ricky Lee (Linda) of North Myrtle Beach, Ronnie Lee, Timothy Lee (Frances), both of Wilmington, NC; two daughters, Kay Conlon (David) of Queensburgh, NY, Tammy Lee Henry of Myrtle Beach; one brother, Robert Small (Judy) of Nichols, SC; two
sisters, Doris Small Rowe (Bill) of Wilmington, NC, Frances Small McCulty of Laguna Niquel, CA, nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Jean Marie Thomas, 60 died Sunday, August 3, 2008 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Wilmington.
She was born November 21, 1947 in Dalton, PA to Edward and Eloise Thomas and was a resident of Scranton most of her life. Jean attended Lackawanna Trail High School where she was on the flag team. She was most recently employed at Fleet and Bank of America in Moosic.
Jean was a loving mother and grandmother with a magnificent sense of humor. She loved to make crafts and particularly crochet. Jean loved reading, the beach, enjoyed cooking for everyone and dragging her family to museums, historical sights and battlegrounds.
She is survived by her mother Eloise Thomas of Leland, NC, son Gerard Brier and wife Wendy of Blossvale, NY, daughter Jennifer Brier of Hampstead, NC, brothers Edward Thomas of Middleboro, MA and James Thomas of Leland, NC, grandchildren Melissa Rodriquez, Nathan King, Brittany King and Kai Knight.
A celebration of Jean's life will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 16, 2008 at Unity Christ Church of Wilmington.

On Friday, August 8, 2008 Gladys Vernal Russell 86, of Herndon Virginia (formerly of Oakland CA) passed away at her daughter's home. She was the beloved wife of the late Percy Russell of Oakland, CA. She was the devoted mother of the late Wilver (Willie) D. Stargell, Pittsburgh Pirates' MVP and Hall of Famer, and Sandrus Collier of Herndon, VA. Also survived by grandchildren Claiborne Collier V of Herndon VA, Kelli Stargell, Wilver Stargell Jr, Dawn Stargell Moore of Atlanta GA, Precious Stargell of Kansas, Wendy Stargell of Claremont, CA, and step -grand children Christian Collier and Murshell Mabry of the San Francisco Bay area. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great grand children, and wonderful friends. Funerals will be held in

Ralph Douglas Walton, Sr., age 88, of Jacksonville, FL, died peacefully August 7, 2008 after a brief illness He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Margaret P. Sandlin, daughter, Ann Passavanti (Don), son, R. Douglas Jr (Linda), all of Jacksonville, FL, grandchildren, Philip Rosenberger III of Newcastle Australia, Margaret
Norcott (Guy) of Sandy Springs GA, great-grandchildren, Amelia and Noella Norcott, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Stephen. He was born on August 5, 1920 in Garland, North Carolina. He grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina where he attended school. He served in the U.S. Army in the European
Theatre during World War II. He moved his family to Jacksonville in 1960 when the Atlantic Coast Line railroad (now CSX) moved here. He retired in 1982 after 42 years of service. After his retirement he and Margaret enjoyed many wonderful summers at their vacation home in the North Carolina mountains.
As a devoted member of the Arlington United Methodist Church, he greatly enjoyed church activities and being in the Methodist Mens Club. He faced a number of medical issues during the last twenty-five years and he will always be remembered for his sweet spirit and determination to make the best of any situation that came his way. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements are being handled by Arlington Park Funeral Home, 920 Lone Star Rd., Jacksonville, FL. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 12, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Arlington United Methodist Church at 1400 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL.

Larry James Dempsey (63), beloved father, dear friend, and caring partner, was united with God on August 13, 2008. He was born in Buffalo, NY on July 1, 1945 and lived in Gasport, NY with his family until he joined the United States Marine Corps to serve his country. He was stationed at Paris Island, SC. He later moved to Wilmington, NC where he spent the remainder of his life on the coast. Dad later served as a member of the NC National Guard. He retired from Dupont but continued to work even after retirement. Dad was an extremely hard worker who enjoyed nature, people, and being active. He was known for his good nature and generosity!
He is survived by his loving daughters, Kristen and Lora Dempsey, both of Wilmington, NC; his beloved fiance and partner of 11 years, Linda Drevyn; his brothers Raymond (Skip) and wife Susan Dempsey of Social Circle, Ga. and Jack Dempsey of San Monteo, CA; sisters Nella and husband Ronnie Porter of Gasport, NY, Joan and husband Howard Flatt of Rankin, FL, Pat Farrington of Warwick, NY, Melody McGee of Gasport, NY; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews. Larry was preceeded in death by his parents George and Eleanor Dempsey and his sister Diane Rizzo. Larry will be gravely missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Mr. Fred G. Floyd, Jr., 75, passed away early Thursday, August 14, 2008. He was the son of the late Fred, Sr. and Stella Giles Floyd. Mr. Floyd is survived by his loving wife Sonja Barrett Floyd, two sons; Fred G. Floyd, III, and John Floyd, both of Plymouth, NC, one daughter; Pam Troutman, and husband Ronnie, of Salisbury, NC,
two grandchildren; Courtney Floyd and Lukas Troutman.
Mr. Floyd was an Army veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite. Bushrod Washington "Rod" Nash, Jr., 78, of Carolina Beach, was called to his heavenly home Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Rod was born December 17, 1929 in Goldsboro, NC, eldest son of the late Julia Prince Nash and Bushrod Washington Nash. His wife, Betty Jean Watkins Nash, and youngest brother, James William Nash, of Southport, NC, preceded him in death.
The family relocated to coastal NC in 1941, and Rod spent his childhood among the surf and sands of Carolina Beach. He was a member of the 1948 graduating class of New Hanover High School where he participated in the Naval Reserves and Army ROTC. Rod served in the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Korean Conflict and
was awarded the Bronze Star with five oak leaf clusters for his tour of duty. Following the Korean War, Rod attended North Carolina State University and returned to his beloved Wilmington to enjoy a career if Architectural Design and Drafting with Ballard, McKim and Sawyer until his retirement in 1985. Rod enjoyed traveling, Civil War
history, boating, and fishing, was an avid hunter, and collected armory and Civil War artifacts. He will be fondly remembered by his fellow huntsmen at his favorite hangout, the Black River Hunt Club, and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
He is survived by his brother, David M. Nash, of Carolina Beach; his rekindled childhood love, Margaret Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews, with whom he spent many special and beautiful days.

Edith Justice Ritter, 85, of Wilmington, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, August 13, 2008.
Edith was born in Jacksonville, NC on July 31, 1923 and was the last survivor of seven siblings. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Percy J. Bradshaw.
Edith was a loving and caring woman who had many joys in life. She was skilled in many crafts including sewing, quilting and making dresses and dolls. She enjoyed working in her yard and watching the hummingbirds. Edith loved taking walks along Greenfield Lake and being with others. She had an out-going personality and never
slowed down. After moving to Wilmington, Edith worked with the Coastline Rail Road and retired from the New Hanover County School System.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Ritter; two children, Terry Bradshaw and his wife Peg, of Central Valley, NY and Denise White and her husband Biff, of Wilmington; two step-children, Cheryl McCammon, of Albuquerque, NM and Denise Owens (Randy) of San Antonio, TX; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Bradshaw; multiple step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 1-2pm, Saturday, August, 16, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 2pm at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Kenney was born August 4, 1960, in Wilmington, NC, son of Robert Howard Whitman and Ruby Jean Bowen Whitman. His sister, Vickie Jo Whitman, preceded him in death.
Mr. Whitman was a 1979 graduate of John T. Hoggard High School, and served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who loved the ocean and playing billiards. Kenney was a good family man who loved his sons. He was a loving father, son, brother, and friend.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Jason Whitman and wife, Jennifer, of Roxboro, NC, and Alex Whitman of Kings Mountain, NC; grandson, Cameron Whitman; sister, Carla Whitman Stephens of Fayetteville, NC; brother, Scott Whitman of Wilmington, NC; former spouse, Kim Whitman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara A. Worden, 80, of Winnabow, NC, died Friday, August 15, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born in Minneapolis, MN, on June 22, 1928, the daughter of the late Edward John and Estelle Beatrice Carufel Bidwell. Surviving is her husband James M. Worden; a brother, Robert J. Bidwell (Phyllis); a sister, Mary Jean Laughlin; nine nieces and nephews; sixteen grand nieces and nephews.

Fowler, Emma Irene (Mintz) - Age 73, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Monday, August 11, 2008 at McLaren Regional Medical Center, Flint, Michigan.
Emma was born in Columbus County, North Carolina on June 5, 1935, the daughter of William and Emeline (Dale) Mintz. She was preceded in death by husband, J.P., a son, James Monroe and four sisters.
Surviving are four daughters, Geraldine (Wayne) Chandler, of Durand, Michigan, Marie (Jay) Myers of Flint, Michigan, Linda (Eric) Pregel of St. Cloud, Florida and Anita (Larry) Donathan of Leland, North Carolina. Four sons, Bruce (Bess) Fowler, of Leland, North Carolina, Mike (Ginan) Fowler, of Flint, Michigan, Mitch (Sue) Fowler, of Flint, Michigan and Eric (Shelly) Fowler, Flint TWP. Michigan and 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A brother, Roy (Maxine) Mintz and a sister, Bertha Robinson.
Pall Bearers will be her grandsons: Jeremy Miller, James Tuttle, Mikey Fowler, Travis Myers Jesse Donathan and Cletus Chandler. Visitation 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Coble-Ward Smith Funeral Home, Oleander Dr. Wilmington, NC. Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 18, 2008. Whiteville -- Mrs. Evelyn M. Register, 75, of Whiteville died Thursday, August 14, 2008 in Premier Living Nursing Home at Lake Waccamaw. She was born September 9, 1932 the daughter of the late Hamilton Eugene McCumbee and Gladys Helen Register McCumbee. Her husband, Lester Register recently preceded her in death. She was formerly employed with Whiteville Apparel and Timmie Corp. She was also a certified nursing assistant. Evelyn was a mother and grandmother to many.
Graveside service will be conducted 2:00 pm Sunday, August 17, 2008 at Peacock's Columbus Memorial Park by Rev. Kerry Peeler and Rev. Chip Hannah. Interment will be in Peacock's Columbus Memorial Park.

Charles Stephen Stokley, Sr. went home to be with the Lord August 15, 2008. He was born in Wilmington, NC on September 5, 1930. The son of the late Charlie James Stokley and the late Dorothy Coker Stokley Carter, he graduated from New Hanover High School in 1950. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command. His career included employment as a firefighter with the Wilmington Fire Department, retail advertising manager with the Wilmington Star News, sales representative with Old Dominion Freight Lines and Thurston Motor Lines, and as a machine operator with General Electric. His talents also included woodworking design and construction. He was a member of Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church since 1977. His family includes his wife of fifty-two years, Helen Jacobs Stokley, daughter Beth Stokley Sonnenberg and husband Dan, sons Chuck Stokley and wife Nancy, Kevin Stokley and wife Wendy, and grandchildren Stephen Umstead, Amy Umstead Herring and husband Josh, Mandy Umstead, Jason Stokley, Stephen and James Sonnenberg, and Stephanie and Jessica Stokley. Visitation will be Sunday from 6-8 p.m. at the residence. A service will be held at Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Bellevue Cemetery. Junius Watson Morrison of Warsaw died Friday morning, August 15, 2008 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Junius was born June 21, 1953 in Ronceverte, WV and was the son of The Rev. Joseph G. Morrison of Wilmington and the late Carolyn C. Morrison. Junius was predeceased by a brother, Jackson Davis Morrison.
In addition to his father he is survived by his brother, Dr. Joseph G. Morrison IV and wife, Traudy, of Acworth, Ga.; and his sister, Ann M. Keir and husband, Danny, of Wilmington.
He is also survived by seven nephews and nieces and seven great nephews and great nieces.
Junius was a graduate UNCW and held a Masters Degree from Radford University. Graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18, at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery with The Rev. Ralph Evans officiating. Erma Frances Dukes Pickett, age 59, of Rocky Point died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at her home.
She was born February 6, 1949 in Craven County, the daughter of the late George Daniel and Mary Virginia Jefferson Dukes. She was predeceased by her husband, Warren Garris in 1973.
Mrs. Pickett was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Frances was a loving wife, mama, grandma, sister and friend who was loved by all and will be greatly missed.

Southport -- Nellie (Nell) Spencer of 504 North Atlantic Avenue in Southport died on August 14, 2008. Born on August 20, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Luther Patrick Goss and Esther Grissom Goss of Durham. She was the widow of F.W. Spencer and was predeceased by her oldest son, Frederick W. Spencer.
Mrs. Spencer is survived by sons, Jerry W. Spencer and wife Kathy of Concord, NC and L. Thomas Spencer and wife Mary of Mars Hill, NC; daughter in-law, Sandy Spencer of Southport, 11 grandchildren: Jerry W. Spencer Jr., Austin L. Spencer, Steven F. Spencer, Jon F. Spencer, Bryant P. Spencer, Michael R. Spencer, and Francis (Frank) Spencer, Diane S. Blake, Wendy Spencer, and Matt and Chris Olay; and 5 great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kaitlyn and Hampton Spencer, Graham Carter, Darby Cox. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Stella (Patty) S. Jones, and stepson, Daniel W. Spencer. In addition, for more than 40 years "Mema" provided caring and nurturing day-care in her home for many children of the Southport area and those much-loved children also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday August 18, 2008 at 11 am at Antioch Baptist Church, 1700 Midway Road, Bolivia, NC with Reverend Monroe Cooke officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Spencer's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Kenansville -- Sara Martin Hines, 84, died peacefully on the morning of August 16, 2008 at her home in Kenansville, NC. Sara was born on September 26, 1923, the daughter of Samuel W. and Annie S. Martin in Mt. Olive, NC. She grew up in Mt. Olive, where she attended high school and was valedictorian of her class.
Sara married James (Jay) H. Hines on April 10, 1948. Sara was a dedicated wife and mother, whose focus was doing good for others and the family. Sara was a devout Christian and was actively involved in the Mt. Olive and Warsaw Presbyterian Churches. She was recognized as an honorary life member of the Warsaw Presbyterian Women of the Church for her service to the Lord as a Sunday School Superintendent, Bible Study Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and President of the Women of the Church. Her life influenced so many other lives by bringing joy, comfort and companionship to those in need.
Sara is predeceased by her brothers, David S. Martin and Samuel W. Martin, Jr.
Sara is survived by her husband, James H. Hines of the home; children, James H. Hines, Jr. and wife, Brenda of Apex, NC and Thomas M. Hines and wife, Evalyn of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Robert T. Hines and wife, Kate of Holly Springs, NC and Joy Hines Bouquin and husband, Todd of Apex, NC; and five great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Warsaw Presbyterian Church, 203 East Hill Street, Warsaw, NC. Visitation will immediately follow the service at the church. The family will have a private burial.

HIGH POINT -- Robert Lee "Bob" Honbarrier, Jr., age 81, of 1528 Thornhill Drive, died early Sunday morning, August 17, 2008, at Pennyburn at Maryfield, where he had been a resident for the past eight years and was known as the "King" and self proclaimed "Mayor" of Maryfield.
A resident of High Point most of his life, Bob was born June 1, 1927, in Denton a son of the late Robert Lee "Bob" Honbarrier and the late Daisy Daniel Honbarrier.
After graduating from High Point Central High School, he joined the U S Army and served in Korea. Following military service he received his degree from High Point College (now High Point University). Bob first worked with Piedmont Airlines, in Winston-Salem, where he met and later married Irene Bowers. He left Piedmont and returned to High Point to join the family business, Colonial Motor Freight Lines, retiring in 1983. A Mason and Scottish Rite Shriner, Bob was a member of Acacia Masonic lodge # 674 AF&AM, recently receiving his fifty year
pin. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a past member of the High Point Civitian Club and a past member of the Exchange Club of High Point. A sister, Francis Honbarrier Davis preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife of fifty five years, Irene Bowers Honbarrier of the home; two sons, Reginald G. "Reggie" Honbarrier and his wife Mary of Wilmington and Roger B. Honbarrier and his wife Mary Scott of Wake Forest; two grandchildren, Britt Honbarrier Rimmele and her husband Ryan of Hoboken, New Jersey and Robert Scott Honbarrier of Wake Forest; two sisters, Roxie Honbarrier Workman of Charlotte and Carolyn Honbarrier White and her husband Jack of High Point; two brothers, Archie L. Honbarrier and his wife Louise of High Point and Billy Honbarrier of Baltimore, Maryland.
A funeral service, celebrating Bob's life, will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Tim Cannon and Rev. David Goehring officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 pm until 8 pm at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

A devoted husband and son, a patient, generous father who never failed the people he loved, Tom was a true Southern gentleman. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, July 4, 1922, he grew up in Winston-Salem.
After two years in the infantry during WWII, he returned to graduate from the University of North Carolina in 1947. He joined the newly formed Coca Cola Export Corporation in July 1947, retiring as Assistant Treasurer of the Coca Cola Corporation and Senior Vice President and Treasurer of the Coca Cola Finance Corporation in 1984. During his years at Coke, Tom worked in Hawaii, Manila, Japan, New York, Nassau, Buenos Aires and Atlanta. After retirement, he taught at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
At the time of his death he lived at Fearrington Village in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
He will be missed and remembered by Jean Curtin Jewett, his wife of 61 years; his six children: Kelleher, Curt (Maria), Robert (Amy), Susan (Marsha), Leslie (Patrick) and David (Paula); and nine grandchildren (Valerie Jewett, Beth Toriello, Tom and Joe Jewett, Patty, Danny, Andrew, Sarah, and Emma Paddon): "Love has no ending."
A service will be held at 11:00 on August 30 in the Chapel of the Cross on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Friends and family are invited to the service and to join the family at home afterwards.

Richard (Richie) Gene Reynolds, 42, of Wilmington, NC, died unexpectedly late Friday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Supply, NC.
Born in New Hanover County on November 10, 1965, Richie was employed with International Paper of Riegelwood, NC and had served in the US Army. He owned and operated Rising Son Lawn Care of Wilmington.
Surviving are his parents, Sue Albertson with whom he made his home, and Bill Albertson, Jr. of Leland; his son, Justin Dale Reynolds and two daughters, Julie Dell Reynolds and Heather Sue Reynolds, all of Wilmington; a brother, Mitchell West and wife Renee of Augusta, GA; two sisters, Suanne Reynolds Hudson and husband Scott and Wendy Albertson Bradshaw and husband Neal, all of Wilmington; several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2PM Tuesday at the Pine Valley Church of God. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home

Mr. Monroe Butler, 97, went home to be with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, on Saturday, August 16, 2008. He was born in Dillon County, SC, July 4, 1911, the son of the late Sam and Lidya Butler.
He is survived by his son, James M. Butler of Fuquay-Varina, NC. Mr. Butler was a Navy veteran of WWII. He was an active member of Ogden Baptist Church since July 4, 1971.

MOULTRIE, GA- Emma Batts Green, 89, formerly of Myrtle Beach, died Monday, August 18, 2008, at Park Regency of Moultrie.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Cobb Funeral Chapel in Moultrie, Ga., with Rev. Hale Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memory Gardens in Moultrie.
Casketbearers will be Larry Adams, Jr., Jeff Green, Corey Novotny, Gene West, Jim Cox and David Brown.
Born May 9, 1919, in Duplin County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charlie McLean Batts and Malissa Chadwick Batts. Mrs. Green was a resident of Myrtle Beach, S.C. for many years, and was crowned Miss Myrtle Beach in 1940. It was in Myrtle Beach that she met her late husband, Major James Harold (Jim) Green, (U.S.A.F. Res.) They were married for 54 years. She was past president of the Myrtle Beach American Legion Auxiliary and was a Red Cross Volunteer. She and her husband traveled to many different bases during World War II. In 1951, they came to the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics at Spence Field in Moultrie, and Moultrie has been home since then. Mrs. Green was a member of First United Methodist Church of Moultrie, where she was a member of the Neill McDonald Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women.
She was a member of the Moultrie Lions Club and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow. Mrs. Green was also a member of the Moultrie Federated Guild, Azalea Garden Club and the Magnolia Bridge Club. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to grow flowers. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was devoted to her church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, William J. Batts and two sisters, Helen B. Ballard and Ruby B. Amato.
Survivors include one son, James H. Green, Jr. and wife Sharman of Edwards, Co.; one daughter, Kippy G. Adams and husband Larry of Moultrie, Ga.; one brother, Walter T. Batts and wife Juanita of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Gladys G. Parker of Wilmington, N.C., and Lillian Green, Conway, S.C.; three grandchildren, Larry Adams, Jr. and wife Joanie of Byron, Ga., Melissa Novotny and husband Corey of Jackson, Ga. and Jeff Green of Steamboat Springs, Co. Joseph John Nagy, of Wilmington, died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He served in the US Navy and worked as an accountant in New York City before retiring to North Carolina. He was an active member of AA and the United Faith Fellowship in Atkinson, NC and attended Rocky Point Methodist Church. Marge Lake entered the life eternal on Sunday, August, 17, after a brief illness. She was born in Elgin, Illinois, and was a graduate of National College of Education. As an educator, she taught elementary students in Beloit, WI, Elgin, IL, and for twenty-five years in Joliet, IL.
Retiring in 1990, she moved with her husband to Plantation Village in 2000. She served as President of the Resident Council, and at the time of death was a member of the Village Board of Directors.
Marge is survived by her husband of fifty-six years, The Rev. Levin Lake; and by her children, Michael, Peter and Peggi and their spouses, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and her sister, Helen.
Marge Lake was greatly loved by all who knew her, and will be sorely missed. "Rest eternal grant her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her. May she rest in Peace."
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at St. Andrew's On-the-Sound Episcopal Church by The Rev. Richard G. Elliot. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Thelma Ward Pierce, 94, formerly of Wilmington, died peacefully on Saturday, August 16, 2008, in Greensboro, NC, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Pine Valley United Methodist Church, 3788 Shipyard Blvd. with Rev. Dean Morton and Rev. Jeanne Ray officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Pierce was born on June 5, 1914, in Columbus County, NC, the daughter of the late Louis Calvin Ward and the late Mary Josephine Arthur Ward.
She was a member of Pine Valley United Methodist Church and was a retired homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Wade Hampton Pierce; sisters Alma Norment, Junie Moore, Geraldine Smith and brothers,
Henry Ward, Wade Jefferson Ward, and Nick Arthur Smith and son-in-law, Alexander W. Spears, III.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Pierce Spears of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Kimberly Egerton Thompson and husband, Mark, of Mason Neck, VA; Lawrence Pierce Egerton and wife, Lynn, of Greensboro; great-grandsons, Cameron Stuart Thompson of Mason Neck, VA, and Noah Lawrence Egerton of Greensboro; stepgrandson, Craig Spears and wife, Ginger, of Eden, stepgreat-grandsons Denver Spears and Austin Spears of Greensboro; and one stepgreat-granddaughter, Marie Burgess, also of Greensboro.
In addition she is survived by sisters-in-law Zella Belle Ward of Newport, Ophelia Whitley of Wilmington, Alma Rivenbark of Wilmington, Hilda Butler of Charleston, Sybil Pierce of Tallahassee, FL, Carolyn Ward of Sanford, FL, Alexizine Smith of Norfolk, VA, and brother-in-law, Curtis Smith of Jacksonville, FL. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews including special niece, Janice Norment Kye and husband, Carl of Wilmington.

HAVELOCK -- Ruby F. Ruffin, age 83, died Sunday at her residence in the Clubfoot Creek community.
Funeral services will be 11:00 Thursday morning, August 21st, at First Baptist Church, 111 Hollywood Blvd., Havelock, with Rev. Dr. Don Hadley officiating, followed by entombment at Forest Oaks Memorial Gardens, 908 Lake Road, Havelock.
She is survived by four sons, Mark and his wife Patti of San Antonio, TX, Mack and his wife Debby of Hope Mills, N.C., David and his wife Deborah of Havelock, N.C., Gregg and his wife Martha of Havelock; four grandsons, Jason and Matthew of Hope Mills, Andrew and Carson of Havelock; three granddaughters, Amanda, Carley and Avery of Havelock; one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Kay of Havelock; one great-grandson, Cayden David of Havelock; and one sister, Gladys Rivenbark of Burgaw, NC.
A visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:45 Thursday morning at First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church building fund, 111 Hollywood Blvd., Havelock, N.C. 28532.

Thadeous Theodore (Bud) Harrison, 85, of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at his residence.
He was born in Washington County, NC, on June 25,1923, the son of the late Newsome and Elizabeth Rhoda Cutler Harrison.
Bud was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Marine Corp. and retired in 1989 from Federal Paper Board in Riegelwood, NC after 37 years of service. He will be remembered fondly by all those who worked with him.
Surviving is his wife, Ruth Harrison of the home; three daughters, Amy Crews and husband, Tracey of Lexington, NC, Anita Harrison Reed and husband, Danny of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Peggy Todd of Jefferson, GA; sons, Billy Harrison and wife, Janice of Riegelwood, NC, Bobby Harrison and wife Jean of Lewistown, PA, and Travis
Harrison and wife, Delores of Whiteville, NC; grandchildren, Noah Crews, Harrison and Harper Reed, Johnny and Scott Todd, Kelley Harrison and Lisa Todd; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Casey Todd; brother, Leon Holmes Harrison and wife, Eleanor of Greenville, NC.

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC -- Worth Hutchinson Hester, 85, died peacefully in his home on August 18, 2008. Worth was born on April 6, 1923, in Bladenboro, North Carolina, where he grew up and attended school. He was the youngest son of William Wade Hester and Elizabeth Penny Hester and is survived by his wife of nearly 48 years, Anna Ruth King and their eight children: Beth, Cliff, Emily, Ruth, Worth, Jr., Matthew, Mark and Anita; and seventeen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Helen H. Elliot of Fayetteville. He was preceded in death by his first wife Anne Sutton.
Worth attended school in Bladenboro and graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1939. He attended Wake Forest College in 1940 when World War II interrupted his education as he entered the Army from 1943 through 1946. Following the war, he completed his education, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 and a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1950. He was admitted to the bar in 1950 and practiced law for over 50 years, most of that time in Elizabethtown, North Carolina.
Worth worked as a Solicitor for Bladen County Recorder's Court from 1953-1954. In 1954 he moved to Raleigh where he worked as a staff attorney for the N.C. Attorney General.
In 1955, he returned to Bladen County and began practicing law in partnership with hisfirst cousin, Robert J. Hester, Jr. The partnership which began from that relationship continues today.
Worth served for six years as chairman on the County Board of Public Welfare. He served as Town Attorney for the Town of Clarkton, the Town of Dublin, and the Town of Bladenboro. He served for over 35 years as School Board attorney for the Bladen County Board of Education. In addition, he served as trustee of Southeastern Community College, and as attorney for Bladen Community College until his retirement. He was elected and served for 9 years as Councilor from the 13th Judicial District to the N.C. State Bar Council.
 He also served an appointed term on the Board of Governors of the North Carolina Bar Association. In 1998 Worth was inducted into the North Carolina General Practice Hall of Fame by his colleagues in the North Carolina Bar Association.
Worth was a member and deacon of the Elizabethtown Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for over twenty years. In addition, he served as chairman of the Building Committee for the new sanctuary, as chairman of the Board of Deacons and as a trustee for the Church.
He was a member of the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club and a past president.
Arrangements: The family will receive visitors at the Elizabethtown Baptist Church Sanctuary, 1800 West Broad Street, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 20, 2008. A memorial service will be held at the Elizabethtown Baptist Church on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to the Elizabethtown Baptist Church Bus Fund or Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Robert Warren Huber, age 80, died on Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. He was born on December 24, 1927, in New York, N.Y., the son of the late Hugo Huber and Elsie Schoenborn Huber. He graduated from Mt. Vernon, NY High School and was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
Survivors include Nancy Baker Huber, his wife of 53 years, his son Charles W. Huber of Waldorf, MD, his son Douglas J. Huber, DVM of Rancho Mirage, CA, and daughter-in-law Judith E, Yee, DVM of Rancho Mirage, CA.
He was an owner of Mayer of Westchester, a Volvo car dealership in Larchmont, N.Y., and owner of Harbor Marina in Henderson, N.Y. He retired to Wilmington in 1988.
Bob's greatest interest was working on car, boat, and motorcycle engines; his most recent passion was maintaining his 1966 Ford Mustang. He was a member of the Sun Coast Cruisers, a Wilmington classic car club, and Chapter Q of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, a Wilmington motorcycle club, Mid-life he entered car ice racing events in the Northeast, was active on the Sports Car Club of America road racing circuit, and raced as the Northeast B-sedan champion at Daytona, FL, culminating his racing career with having finished every race he entered.
Bob always loved and helped animals; his latest love was Perro, a Dutch Shepherd Dog, who traveled non-stop by car with son Douglas and daughter-in-law Judith from California to give him final comfort.

Dr. Samuel Sherman Spicer, Jr., 94, husband of the late Gertrude McRae Spicer, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2008. The relatives and friends of Dr. Samuel Spicer are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
Dr. Spicer was born August 12, 1914, in Denver, Colorado, son of the late Samuel Sherman Spicer, Sr. and Eleanor Kirk Spicer. Dr. Spicer received both his BS and MD degrees from the University of Colorado. Following internship at the University of Wisconsin General Hospital, he was commissioned as Assistant Surgeon in the United States Public Health Service in 1940, retiring as Medical Director in 1966. He had a successful career at the National Institutes of Health where he was Chief of the Section of Biophysical Histology in the Laboratory of Experimental Pathology. In 1967, Dr. Spicer moved to the Medical University of South Carolina and joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Dr. Spicer received an Honorary Medical Degree from the University Linkoping in Linkoping, Sweden in 1977. In 1982 he received an award from the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science. He was internationally known for his work on carbohydrate chemistry and histochemistry. His research interests also included cystic fibrosis and age related hearing loss. During his 60 year career he published 460 original research papers and his publications have been cited more than those of any other researcher in South Carolina.
In 1998, Dr. Spicer was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather.
He was also an avid golfer and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his children, Dr. Kenneth McRae Spicer and his wife, Patricia H. Spicer of Sullivans Island, SC, Dr. Eleanor Spicer Reuben and her husband, Dr. Adrian Reuben of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Dr. Samuel S. Spicer, III and his wife, Jane D. Spicer
of Wilmington, NC; eight grandchildren, Dr. Kevin Spicer and his wife, Dr. Galin Spicer, Dr. Leigh Spicer and her husband, Louis Bernard, Peter Spicer, Matthew Spicer, Allen Spicer, Kirk Spicer, Sara Reuben and Aaron Reuben; and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gertrude McRae Spicer.

Dorothy Ann Zendt, 70, of Leland, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.
Dorothy was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a resident of Wilmington for 15 years. She was active in the Foster Grandparent Program in New Hanover County. She was an enthusiastic arts and crafts hobbyist, donating her talents not only to the Wilmington and Oak Island Senior Centers, but to many charitable organizations, friends and family members.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Zendt. She is survived by two daughters, Susan Lee Wright and husband, Jimmy, and Cynthia A. Soden, all of Leland, NC; one son, John A. Zendt and wife, Deborah, of Friendswood, TX; seven grandchildren, Nick, Anthony and Marla Wright, Katie Soden, and Ashley, Amy and John Zendt; one sister, Elizabeth Pucel of Cleveland, OH; and numerous dear friends.
A memorial service will be 6 pm, Thursday, August 21, 2008, at Andrews Market Street Chapel. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.

Annie Lucille Townsend Allen, 79, of Wilmington, died August 19, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Lucille was born November 20, 1928, in Fayetteville, NC. She was the daughter of the late Lennie Thomas Townsend and Bertha Skipper Townsend. Lucille was a nursing assistant for many years in nursing homes in the Wilmington area. She was a very active member of The Pentecostals of Wilmington.
Lucille is survived by two sons, Larry Dean Allen, Kinston, NC, and Donald Allen, Austin, TX; daughters, Margaret Allen Padgett and her husband H. Stan, Calhoun, GA, Kathy Taylor, Fayetteville, NC, Faye Raynor, Rome, GA, and Taylor Ammons, Wilmington, NC; a sister, Barbara Carr, Hamilton, OH; 8 grandchildren; Scott Hersman, Shane Hersman, Sonia Bunn, Chappell Padgett, Chris Hersman, Amy Breuer, Chris Steele, and Michael Steel; 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. GARNER -- Danny Hickman, 55, went to be in the arms of his Lord on Sunday evening. A 1971 graduate of Garner High School and a 1975 graduate of Campbell University, he worked for University Ford in Durham for 23 years and had numerous friends there.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, 7:00 PM at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1329 Hwy 70 West, Garner. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00-7:00 PM, prior to the service and at other times at the home of Nancy and Buddy Cagle, 7461 White Oak Road, Garner.
Danny leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 37 years, Janet Dale Hickman; one daughter, Erica Hickman Hughes; son-in-law, Marty Hughes of Grimesland; mother, Audrey P. Hickman of Garner; sister, Nancy H. Cagle and husband, Buddy of Garner; brothers, Rufus "Bud" Hickman of Raleigh, Donald "Donnie" W. Hickman and wife, June of Wilmington; a very special great nephew, Will A. Hamilton, who was his fishing and hunting buddy; his dear Aunt Evelyn P. Finocchio of Florida and many special nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many special friends.
An avid Field Trial Beagler, he leaves behind many good friends from Down East Beagle Hunt Club and everywhere he traveled with his beagles. He also leaves behind his church family at First Church of the Nazarene in Garner. Preceding him in death were his father, Rufus A. Hickman and younger brother, Kenneth "Tiny" Hickman, all of Garner.

Sandra Barnhill Horne, age 52, of Rocky Point died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter. She was born August 14, 1956, in Pender County and was the daughter of the late S. L. Barnhill and Ophelia Barnhill Gilleland. Sandra was a faithful member of Moores Creek Baptist Church. She was employed for 33 years as office manager for Southern Homebuilders, Inc.
Surviving are her loving husband of 25 years, William McArthur Horne of the home; sister, Christy B. Jasper and her husband, Joe of Burgaw; brothers, Robert M. Barnhill and his wife, Cornelia, and Kenneth F. Barnhill and his wife, Karen, all of St. Helena and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Moores Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Philip Eakins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Marian Dale Goode Mork, 88, of Wilmington, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2008, at Davis Health Care.
Marian was born on January 25, 1920, in Wilmette, IL to the late Eldon and Irene Goode. She attended the First Congregational Church of Wilmette. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL. She had been a resident of Wilmington since 1981 and also lived in New York and Connecticut.
She was a member of Seashore Spinners and Weavers and was a horticultural therapy volunteer for many years.
Marian was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Irene Goode Morris. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ralph Mork; one daughter, Melissa Dale Mork Paige and her husband, Gary Niles Paige; one sister, Donna Mae Goode Gunnarson; three grandchildren, Hayley Dale Paige, Gerald Niles Mork Paige and Benjamin Buck Paige
and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Mork residence on Saturday the 23rd, from 2pm until 5pm.

LENOIR, NC -- Mrs. Linda Jo Bresenham Anderson, age 40, died Monday, August 18, 2008, in Hickory, NC.
A memorial service will be 3pm Saturday, August 23, 2008, at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, SC ,with Chaplain Miriam Mick officiating.
Linda was a daughter of Jack Elton Bresenham and Nancy Bull Bresenham of Rock Hill. Linda graduated from Appalachian State University (B.A. - French), and Caldwell Community College (A. A. S. - Nursing). Linda saved and touched many lives as a registered nurse, a bone marrow donor, and as a wonderfully caring person. She
loved being a nurse, especially working in psychiatric and pediatric wards.
Linda's was an eclectic education beginning at 3 years old when she attended the International School in Milan, Italy, then returned to the USA where she attended the Boy's Club pre-school in Mt. Kisco, NY, and Cisqua School in Bedford, NY. Elementary school began at Mt. Kisco Elementary followed by a move to Glenwood Elementary in Chapel Hill, NC. Jr. High was in Chapel Hill and at Danemark in Winchester, England. High school began at Castilleja in Palo Alto, CA, and finished with graduation from Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, NC. Linda was fluent in French and later learned medical Spanish to better communicate with her Spanish speaking patients.
In addition to her parents, survivors include her husband, John Anderson of Lenoir, NC; her brother, David Bresenham of Los Angeles, CA; her sister, Janet Bresenham of Portales, NM; and her many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives who were also sources of happiness for her. She was preceded in death by her brother, Craig Bresenham.

Eloise Downes Wentz Brandy was born in Denton, Maryland, on September 14, 1927.
She was the daughter of Marion Hardcastle Downes of Banbury, Massachusetts and Hattie Salisbury Wright of Baltimore, Maryland. Her father was the stables owner for the town of Denton, Maryland. Later on, he served honorably for the US Army-Air Force in WWII, returning to the States as a decorated war veteran. Her mother worked for a ship's chandeler in Baltimore before her marriage to her father.
Eloise D. Wentz Brandy had one brother, James Ernest Downes, deceased, a WWII US Army-Air Force veteran who was a decorated war veteran returning from France.
She married Irl Jesse Wentz M.D. (deceased) in 1946. He was a US Army surgeon (stationed in Sacramento, California, before WWII). He obtained the rank of Captain in 1946 after WWII remaining in military service until 1954 after being stationed overseas in Korea during the Korean conflict as a MASH surgeon. The Wentzes resided in Salisbury, NC, after he was honorably discharged, beginning his civilian medical practice there, after receiving degrees from the University of Maryland (class of 1946) and the University of Virginia-Charlottesville. He did his internships at Bellevue Hospital in New York, New York and at John Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. He was one of two orthopedic surgeons in Wilmington, NC, from 1967 to 1977, moving after his divorce to Morehead City, North Carolina where he worked at Carteret Memorial Hospital there.
Eloise D. Wentz Brandy divorced in 1976 and married Raymond Brandy, a former US Navy radio operator aboard ship WWII in 1983. Mr. Brandy died in 1993. They lived in Wilmington, NC.
Eloise D. Wentz Brandy is survived by her only daughter, Sharon Wentz Randall of South Carolina, and youngest son, Irl Jesse Wentz, Jr. of Shallotte, North Carolina, along with two cousins, Mary Ellen Wright and Nancy Downes of Denton, Maryland, who now reside in Pinehurst, North Carolina. She was a member of the Methodist Church as a child in Maryland and sang in the choir, playing the piano for her Sunday School class later as a teenager. She attended Washington and Mary College in Virginia and the Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris, France. Dr. and Mrs. Wentz were members of the Coast Guard Squadron of Wilmington, NC. She was a member of the Junior Women's League and the Azalea Garden Club in earlier years along with the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, North Carolina. She was fond of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Salisbury, NC, along with
Dr. Wentz and their three children attended school there at the parochial school before the family moved to Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be given to the American Heart Association, the American Arthritis Foundation for which her daughter worked as a volunteer several times, or the American Lung Association.
The remaining family will attend a small, private service at Oleander Gardens Cemetery off of Wrightsville Beach Road on Friday. News media is asked by the family not to attend the private event.

Mrs. Mamie C. Robinson of 710 Church Street died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Silver Stream Health & Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 25, 2008 at 12 noon at St. Luke AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial park.Surviving to cherish the sweet memories of a precious, loving and giving person are her husband, James Edward Robinson; two devoted daughters, Yvonne R. Lyde (friend Ervin Nelson) and Constance R. (William) Evans; two granddaughters, who loved and adored her and whom she loved dearly, Shayla Yvonne Evans and Phylicia Shari' Evans; a devoted and faithful sister Ms. Inez S. Richardson; brother-in-law David J. (Lillie Mae) Robinson and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Mamie was employed by Robert S. Jervay Housing Project (1961-1989) for many years. She initiated and implemented many ideas. In honor of her years of service to Robert S. Jervay Place, the Wilmington Housing authority named the new community center the Mamie C. Robinson Community Center on April 29, 2005.
The family of Mrs. Robinson will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Sunday at the Adkins Drain Funeral Service Chapel and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Juanita Goodman Cranfield, age 80, of Salisbury, passed away August 22, 2008 at Rowan Regional Medical Center. She was born May 18, 1928 in Rowan County. Preceding her in death are her parents Wilma Canupp Goodman and Walter Cornelius Goodman.
Juanita was educated at Rowan County Schools. Earlier in life she worked at Cartex Mills, later she worked 23 years for PPG, then Dillard's Distribution Center and JC Penney Distribution Center. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Luther White Cranfield, whom she married March 5, 1961; daughter Marla Lowery and Jerry of Spencer; brother Walter D. and Eunice Goodman of
Salisbury, two sisters Pauline Goodman Young of Linwood and Georgia Goodman Hoskins and Buddy of Wilmington; 2 Grandchildren, James Lowery and Joy, and Donna (Mo) Lowery; Great-Grandchild, Jeremy Lowery; and Step Great-Grandchild Jessica Lowery.

WASHINGTON, NC --Duart "Dhu" Jennette Johnston, 71, passed away at her home in Washington, NC, on August 23, 2008. Born on October 11, 1936, in Washington, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Alexander Tunnel and Mary MacLean Jennette. She was married to Donald Cameron Johnston on December 21, 1956 who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Johnston graduated from Washington High School, attended Salem College and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from George Mason University. She worked at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, was an Honorary Life Member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder, a member of the Addisco Book Club and The Colonial Dames of America.
She is survived by her brother Mr. Alexander Jennette of Washington; and sister Mrs. Annetta Jennette Howell of Hilton Head, SC. The loving mother of six sons, she was preceded in death by one son, Alexander "Sandy" Jennette Johnston. Surviving are sons Donald C. Johnston Jr. and wife Sandra of Hickory, NC, William M. Johnston and wife Liz of Greenville, NC, G. Nelson Johnston and wife Heather of Wilson, NC, Franklin P. Johnston and wife Christina of Raleigh, NC, E. Angus Johnston and wife Grace of Greenville, NC; daughter-in-law Lainie Johnston, of Wilmington, NC; and five grandchildren, Cameron, Susan and Holly Johnston of Wilson, NC, and Emily and Katie Johnston of Hickory, NC.

James Kenneth Abrams, 88, of Leland, went to be with his Lord, Saturday, August 23, 2008.
He was born July 11, 1920, in Raymondville, MO, son of the late William Wesley Abrams and Mary Wenona Abrams. is son, Terry Wesley Abrams and daughter, Linda Kay Militello preceded him in death.
He was a World War II Veteran of the United States Marines, having served in the South Pacific. He was wounded on Guam and received a Purple Heart Medal. Mr. Abrams was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
Mr. Abrams met his wife, Blondell Smith Abrams in Wilmington and they recently celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary, March 4, 2008. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by daughters, Nancy Hummell and Tena Collmar; a sister, Sylvia Craig and husband Garnel of Grain Valley, MO; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Faydene Corbett, Mickey Turlington, Peggy Lockamy and husband Robert, and Janis Stone; and brothers-in-law, Ray Smith, Jay Smith and wife Geraldine; many nieces and nephews; and special C.N.A.'s, Sylvia Keaton, Hattie Mosley, and Melisha Johnson.
Also recognized are special Christian friends who have helped with the care of Mr. Abrams, some over the last fourteen years, Jay Adams, Kevin Brooks, John Goodson, Clyde Holly, Danny Langston, Mike Morley, Joe Norman, Rob Strickland, Eric Vanderhaar, Glenn Wells, and Joe Keach, (all members of Northside Baptist Church). These friends will be serving as honorary and active pallbearers.

Patsy Ann O'Daniels Boyd, 79, of River Road, SE, Winnabow, NC, formerly of Shell Point Road, Shallotte, NC, died Monday, August 25, 2008, in the Brunswick Cove Nursing Center.
Mrs. Boyd was born January 1, 1929, in Kincaid, WV, to the late Thomas and Nora Pennington Kincaid. She was a member of the Eastern Star, and Oak Hill, West Virginia Chapter and Southport Chapter, and a past matron of both chapters.
She was predeceased by her husband Charles Wesley O'Daniels in 1985 and her second husband Luther Boyd in 1996; and a granddaughter, Della Hoyle, in 1996. She is survived by her two sons Dallas L. O'Daniels of Shallotte and Dale L. O'Daniels of Shallotte; a daughter Cheryl Richard, husband Ray, of Supply, NC; a sister Beulah Phillips of Kincaid, WV; four grandchildren, Shawn, Bryan, Christopher, and Leah; and seven great grandchildren.

Kenneth Woodward Gault, 86, of Wilmington, NC, peacefully passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008, at Clare Bridge of Wilmington, after a long illness.
He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on July 11, 1922, to the late James A. and Winifred L. Gault. He was preceded in death by his only brother, James A. Gault III.
Ken's early life was spent in Louisiana where he was very active in the Boy Scouts. He was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout and worked each summer with their training programs.
He attended LSU for three years before receiving his commission in 1944.
His military career began in the ROTC program in high school and college. He served as Captain of the field artillery unit in the US Army during WW II for three years in the Pacific Theatre, and was the recipient of Bronze Star. Upon being honorably discharged, he returned to the states to finish his last year at LSU.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Levon Gault; two sons, Douglas A. Gault and wife Jane of Lincolnshire, IL and Donald C. Gault and wife Jody of North Attleboro, MA ; four grandchildren, Christy and Melanie of Illinois, and Emily and Brian of Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. Clyde Denny. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. Willard Cline Williams of Wilmington, died Saturday August 23, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. He was born October 30, 1944, in Raleigh County, West Virginia son of the late Willard Williams and Elizabeth Ransom Williams.
Mr. Williams served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and was a lifetime member of the DAV.

Wayne K. Everhart, Jr., 47, of Carmel Lane, Shallotte, NC, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Salisbury, NC, on May 9, 1961, he was a son of Wayne K. and Barbara Matthews Everhart, Sr., Supply, NC.  He was predeceased by a sister Sharon Louise Everhart. Surviving in addition to his parents are a son Joseph (Joey) Everhart, Ocean Isle Beach, NC; two daughters Celia Everhart, Topsail Beach, NC, and Sybil Everhart, Shallotte, NC;
a sister Debra (Debbie) Garrett, Columbia, SC; two brothers Michael and Melvin Everhart, both of Rowan County, NC; one grandson Trey Doyle; and best friend Paula Cartrette.

JOHN GEORGE STOECKER JR
MAY 5, 1923 - AUGUST 24, 2008
Duty, Bravery, Family, Golfing, Gardening, College. Born in Milwaukee, WI, and former resident of Hampton, VA, and Wilmington, NC, John George Stoecker Jr. passed away in Bridgewater, Virginia.
He will be remembered as a handsome and charming husband, father, and friend with a great "flyboy" grin, a cheerful charismatic personality, and a competitive spirit. John was predeceased by his gracious, patient and caring wife, Dorothy Wetzel Stoecker on April 10, 2008, after 63 years of marriage.
He is predeceased by his parents, John G. Stoecker, Sr., and Mary Smith Stoecker and one sister, Arlene Karin and is survived by two sisters, Marion Kiely of Waukesha, WI, Carol Stoecker of Tucson, AZ, and his brother, William Stoecker of Milwaukee, WI. He is also survived by five children including Michael J. Stoecker of Gurnee, IL; Patricia B. Stoecker of Burgaw, NC; Kathy Prysock of Bridgewater, VA; John G. Stoecker III of Cos Cob, CT, James J. Stoecker of Yorktown, VA., eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stoecker graduated from Boys Technical High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1940 and worked for two years at Cutler-Hammer, Inc. as a Machine Engraver. He joined the Army Air Force, completed Pilot training school, and served overseas as a pilot of the B-17 Flying Fortress with the 8th Air Force, 384th Bombardment Group. He flew more than 31 sorties over enemy occupied Europe out of Grafton Underwood, England between January and April 1945 for which he was awarded the Air Medal and four Oak Leaf Clusters for bravery and meritorious achievement. While serving in Korea and Vietnam he received an additional Air Medal and fifth Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious achievement. Other tours of duty included overseas assignments to Japan and Okinawa and stateside assignments to Mississippi; Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia. At the completion of his 27-year career with the Air Force, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
After retiring from the Air Force, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Old Dominion University. Shortly thereafter, he began a second career with the City of Hampton, VA as a project manager in an affordable housing program. John enjoyed golfing, gardening, woodworking, church activities, and music throughout his retirement.
Reassignment orders received, flight plan filed, and safety check completed, Dad will enjoy a well-deserved permanent assignment. Have a beautiful flight - we miss you so much Dad!
Until we see you again, we'll cherish our childhood memories, joyfully celebrating your return home from a mission. With you in your comfortable green flight suit with insignias, patches, and nametag, exhausted and in need of a shower and a shave, we were so happy you were home. Your beard stubble scratching our faces after every big hug from your muscular arms, we took turns sitting on your lap and laughing. Say hello to Mom!
Colonel Stoecker succumbed to complications of congestive heart failure that he fought for many years. He would want to thank the staff at White Birch Estates, Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and Bridgewater Nursing Home for their care and concern. John will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA alongside his wife and sweetheart, PHDorothy, after a memorial service at the Fort Meyer Post Chapel.
John will be dearly missed by his family and friends and all who knew him.

Ruth Marie Nelson Booker passed away on Monday, August 26, 2008, at her home.
She was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on February 10, 1922, to Nels and Hildur Nelson. Ruth married William Raymond Booker, Jr. on November 13, 1943. They resided in Michigan, then relocated to Washington, DC, in 1962. Ruth worked at Georgetown University and was an avid tennis player, an accomplished soloist and performed in Community Theatre and enjoyed singing throughout her life.
Ruth relocated to Wilmington in 1996 where she was a member of Lutheran Church of Reconciliation. She made many friends and enjoyed the Cape Fear Area.
She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Marie Sherman; her son William R. Booker; a grandson Adam Nelson Effertz; a granddaughter Hillary Marie Horvath and her husband Jacob; two great granddaughters Lila Marie Horvath and Harper Ann Horvath.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Saturday, August 30, 2008, at Lutheran Church of Reconciliation. Following the service the family will receive friends at Ruth's home. FLORENCE, SOUTH CAROLINA -- Lyman Wainwright Emory, 65 of Florence died Monday, August 26, 2008, at his residence after an illness.
Mr. Emory was born in Charlotte, NC, a son of Cordia Swanson "Jonnie" Emory and the lateLyman Fred Emory. He graduated from NC State with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
Mr. Emory retired from General Electric in 2006 after 35 years of working in the fields of Nuclear, Aircraft Engines and Health Care Engineering. He was a member of the Florence Baptist Temple and enjoyed golf and fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 21 years, Nina Bullard Emory of the home; his mother, Cordia Swanson "Jonnie" Emory of Florence; four children, Robert (Mi Kyong) Emory of Connecticut, Martha (Eric) Richards of Florence; Mick Ross of Nashville, TN, and Steven (Karla) Ross of San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren, James Emory, Diane Zybko, David Zybko, Sarah Richards, Eli Ross, Hannah Ross, Elizabeth Ross; brother, James (Reita) Swanson of Gastonia, NC.

Mr. Joseph Leonard White, Sr., 84, of Fayetteville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the Carolina Inn.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30, 2008, at 11 am in Village Baptist Church with Rev. Nick Smith officiating. Entombment will be held at 3 pm Saturday at Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Kinston, NC.
Mr. White was born in Cove City in 1924 and lived in the Kinston area until 1958 when his job transferred him to Wilmington, where he lived until 1965. From there he moved to Fayetteville. Mr. White was a Navy veteran of World War II and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked for Pilot Life Insurance Company for over 40 years. He was a member of the Haymont Lions Club and was a member of Village Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Frances White.
He is survived by his son, Joseph L. White Jr. and wife, Teri, of Wilmington, granddaughter, Katie and grandson, Joey; daughter, Joyce W. Tabor and husband, Richard, of Chapel Hill, and grandson, Clay; daughter, Candace K. White of Raleigh; brother, Dalton Ray White of Dover, NC; and sisters, Minnie Ferrier of Newport and Rose Wolfrom of Pennsylvania.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, 10 to 11 am, at the church Saturday morning.

Robert Thomas Williams, Sr., 65, of Wilmington, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter. He was known to his friends and family as "Murph" or "Buddy". He was born September 25, 1942, in Salisbury, NC, son of the late Murry Alexander Williams and Elwanda Carter Williams. His daughter, Cynthia Ann Williams, preceded him in death.
Murph had played football for Granite Quarry (the first East Rowan High School football team) and obtained a scholarship to Wingate College. He was a self-employed, licensed plumber who loved his grandchildren and enjoyed football and cookouts with family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his son, Robert "Robbie" Williams, Jr. and wife, Sharon, of Faith, NC; best friend, Sheron Wagner, of Wilmington, NC; and grandchildren, Lauren and Logan Sauers of Castle Hayne, NC.
Celebrations of Life, for family and friends, will be held in Faith, NC, and Wilmington, NC, at a later date.

The Reverend Walser Haddon Allen, Jr., of Wilmington, died Thursday August 28, 2008, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born January 19, 1925, in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Reverend Walser Haddon Allen, Sr. and Nannette Ramseur Allen of Bethlehem, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Bell Allen, and his brother, Dr. Thomas Hoke Allen, of Birmingham, AL. Walser graduated from Kernersville High School in Kernersville, NC, in 1942. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA in 1945. After serving his country in the United States Army in World War II, he continued his studies at Moravian College where he received his Masters of Divinity degree. He subsequently attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Master of Arts in History.
In 1951 he was ordained as a third generation minister in the Moravian Church and became the founding pastor of Raleigh Moravian Church in Raleigh, NC and served as president of the Raleigh Ministerial Association. In 1955, he became the resident chaplain and a professor of religion at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. It was there that he met Joanne Bell Allen of Wilson, NC, whom he married in 1957.
Walser and Joanne moved to Wilmington in 1964 where he joined the faculty of Wilmington College. He retired from UNCW as an Associate Professor Emeritus in History in 1993 after 29 years of dedicated service. He was a charter member of Covenant Moravian Church, a member of The Order of Isaac Bear, and served as president of the UNCW Retired Faculty Association. Walser was the first president of the Association of Historians in Eastern NC, and was a past president of the NC Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution as well as the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. He was also chairman of the American Revolution Bicentennial Association for New Hanover County.
Walser is survived by four children, Dr. Joanne Bell Allen of Wilmington, NC, Nancy Allen Carlton and husband, Dr. Thomas Kern Carlton, III, of Charlotte, NC, Walser Haddon Allen, III and wife, Mindy Denise Allen, of Charleston, SC, and Jonathan Earl Allen and wife, Kristen Davis Allen, of Wilmington; ten grandchildren, Thomas Kern Carlton, IV, William Hoke Carlton, James Gray Carlton, Anne Tomlinson Carlton, Elizabeth Griffin Allen, Walser Haddon Allen, IV, Dana Ellington Allen, Julia Bell Allen, Olivia Tolar Allen, and Georgia Anne Allen; and one sister, Dr. Mary Barbara Allen of Slingerlands, New York.
Walser was loved and respected by all who knew him. He served the Lord, his family, his vocation, and his community with a sense of dedication and compassion. Within these realms he will long be remembered for his unconditional love and unparalleled integrity which embodied his entire journey through life.
The family will have funeral services conducted by The Rev. Tracy Pryor at Covenant Moravian Church at 3:00 P.M. Saturday August 30, 2008. A graveside service will be held immediately afterwards at Oleander Memorial Gardens at 4:00 P.M. Following the services a reception will be held at the family residence on Oleander Drive.

SOUTHPORT -- Mr. Robert "Bob" Dean Becker, 64 of Southport, passed away August 28, 2008 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. Mr. Becker was born July 3, 1944 in South Bend, Indiana the son of Jack E. Becker Sr., and Doris Lorraine Peterson Becker. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Becker.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Nancy Misner Becker, of the home; a son Richard Becker of Excelsior Springs, MO; three daughters, Christina Becker Ellis of Philadelphia, PA, Kelly Ann Robertson of Kansas City, MO and Gwen Barber of Rocklin, CA; three grandchildren Shelby Robertson, Brooke Robertson, and Nathan Barber; and four brothers, James Becker and wife Joann of Conklin, MI, David Becker and wife Lovey of Northport, AL, Richard Becker and wife Kelly of Sacramento, CA, and Jeffery Becker of Memphis, TN.
Mr. Becker was a veteran of The US Navy having served four years as an ET2; with service in the Vietnam Conflict. His 30 plus year background in engineering took him to many places both in the United States and abroad. While working for Sprint Communications, he was responsible for the transitioning of Sprint's analog network system to digital services. He also directed the FTS2000 project of the Government Services Division of Sprint. From 1996 to 1998 he was CEO in a Joint Venture between Sprint and China Unicom, successfully building the first Foreign Public Telecommunications System in Tianjin, China.
Bob retired from Sprint in 2001. He and his beloved wife, Nancy, moved to St. James, where Bob's passion for golf brought out his humor, joy, and as those who have played with him know - "just a bit" of frustration.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 1, 2008 in the St. James Chapel with Rev. Bob Lee officiating. A reception will follow at the residence, 2742 Pinecrest Drive, St. James Community, Southport.

Tina C. Elkins, 82, of Wilmington, NC, died Friday, August 29, 2008, at her home. She was born in Jackson, Mississippi, July 11, 1926, daughter of the late Martin Cadenhead and Jewel Matthews Cadenhead.
Mrs. Elkins graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson and earned a Master's in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1951. She taught English in the public schools of Mississippi and North Carolina (Southportand Wilmington) before retiring to raise her six children. Later she returned to work as
a legal secretary for her husband. She was a long-time member of Winter Park Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Elkins is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, Lloyd S. Elkins, Jr.; children and their spouses, Steven and Jane Elkins, Susan Roberts, Julie and Jamie Kunze, Catherine Elkins, Patricia and Larry Matson, and Sarah Elkins; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Carys, and Jillian Kunze, Madeleine Roberts, and Anne Elkins.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 1, 2008, at Winter Park Presbyterian Church with Dr. Madison M. Highfill officiating.
The family would like to thank the Pulmonary Rehabilitation staff at New Hanover Regional Medical Center for their cheerful support during the past several years. SILER CITY -- Christine "Cowgirl" Diggs Gilliland, 65, of 506 West Fourth Street, Siler City died Thursday, August 28, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Wilmington. Mrs. Gilliland was born April 27, 1943 the daughter of J. D. and Belzora (Greene) Diggs. Mrs Gilliland was a native of Mecklenburg County and a retired truck driver with Central Feed and was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence (Wormie) L. Gilliland.
She is survived by two sons; Dennis Ryals and wife, Sandra of Laurinburg, Michael Binkley of Lexington; daughter, Laura Ryals Loflin of Wilmington; her mother, Belzora Greene Diggs of Putnam; two brothers, Thomas L. Diggs of Chapel Hill, Earl Diggs of Carlsbad, NM; sisters, Rebecca Walters, Sandra Powers and Martha Jo Ivey all of Putnam and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 30,2008 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC and at other times at the home on 506 West Fourth Street. Norman O'Neil Lowery departed this earthly life Friday, August 22, 2008. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, 5th and Campbell Street, Wilmington, NC, on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at 2:00pm. The remains will lie in state for viewing one hour prior to service.
Norman was born December 26, 1968 in Manhattan, New York to the late Garfield Morris Otey and the late Isabella Lowery. He was raised by his legal guardian, his mother, Eunice L. Lowery. At an early age, Norman moved to Rock Hill, South Carolina where he attended elementary school and joined Boyd Hill Baptist Church. In 1981, he moved back to New York and joined the Job Corp. Norman worked in multiple occupations and felt there was nothing he could not do.
During his years in New York, at a very young age, he met the love of his life, Shireen Flores. Their times together were precious. Even through times of being apart their love apparently never died. On August 26, 2006, Norman and Shireen united in holy matrimony in Wilmington, North Carolina where they started their lives over, together again with their seven children.
Norman had a passion for youth. In New York, he worked with Bartendaz, a physical fitness and self-empowerment program that encouraged young people to take care of their physical and mental health. After moving to Wilmington, he continued to work with youth. He was a part of the Gang Task Force. He often went to several schools and community centers encouraging young people to stay away from gang involvement and to have self-confidence. He also counseled youth at the NHC Juvenile Day Treatment Center.
While living in Wilmington, Norman was a member of New Beginning Christian Church. He was employed as a Maintenance Engineer at the Holiday Inn. Norman had an awesome ability to connect with people. He never met a stranger.
He leaves to cherish his memories: wife, Shireen Flores Lowery of the home; mother, Eunice Lowery of New York; his children, Jaquan Lowery, Lydia Flores, Norman Lowery, David Flores, Jennifer Parker, Ali Flores of Wilmington, NC, Noriana Lowery of New York and step-daughter, Sheniqua Simmons of New York; a brother, Danny Lowery of Rock Hill, SC; father-in-law, James Reed of New York, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Clara Joyce Peay, age 76, of Rocky Point died Thursday, August 28, 2008 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1932 in Sampson County, the daughter of the late Jake and Arlene Guyton Faircloth. She was also predeceased by her husband, Howard Alton Peay, Sr. and brother, Martin Faircloth.
Mrs. Peay was a member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, Howard Alton Peay, Jr. of Wilmington; daughters, Connie Odom and husband, Ricky, of Rocky Point and Sarah Ann Lyon and husband, Buster, of Cape Carteret; grandchildren, Bradley Odon and wife, Brandi, and Jamie Odom and wife, Alexis, all of Rocky Point and Amanda Bridges Peay; great granddaughter,
Trinitee Odom; and brothers, Troy Faircloth and wife, Millie, of Baltimore, MD and Jackie Faircloth and wife, Mary, of Delco. A private family graveside service will be held on Sunday at Riley's Creek Memorial Cemetery with The Rev. Melvin Hall officiating.

After a brief illness, Daisy Savage Batten, 88, formerly of Lilesville, passed into the loving and caring hands of her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 30. Born Daisy Irene Savage on December 10, 1919, she was the youngest daughter and last surviving child of King Earnest and Priscilla Mariah Savage of Rose Hill, NC. Daisy was a dedicated homemaker and wife to her husband, Troy Marvin Batten, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1993, and a loving mother to her five children.
One son, Troy Marvin Batten, Jr. preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by daughters Ann Batten Phillips of Goldsboro, NC; Beth Batten Upton (Jack) of Wilmington, NC; and, sons Donald Batten (Margaret) of Gainesville, GA; and Robert Batten (Dottie) of Concord, NC; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.Daisy was a woman who loved the Lord and lived her faith. She was a member of Lilesville United Methodist Church and was active in all facets of its Christian ministries until her declining health necessitated she be closer to her family for care. She loved her many church friends. She was a Lay Speaker and spoke on many occasions at her church and the other churches in the Lilesville United Methodist Charge. She was a member of the Administrative Board, the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Ladies Sunday School Class. As a resident of Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, she continued to worship the Lord and witness to whomever she met. As a testimonial to their faith and devotion to Daisy, her daughter Beth Upton and the entire Upton family cared for her untiringly and without hesitation during her time in Wilmington.
Daisy had a life-long passion for learning. As a child, she loved school but was unable to complete her education due to family illnesses and deaths. After her children were mature, she returned to school and obtained her high school diploma, and entered the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where she received her BA degree in 1976. Until just before her death, she was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and looked forward to reading the daily newspaper. She was an avid gardener who loved to grow and nurture her garden in the spring and her flowers year-round. She was also a true-blue UNC basketball fan.
The funeral will be at the Lilesville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 2 at 2:00 PM. The Reverend Norm Jones will officiate. Interment will be at Anson Memorial Park following the service.
The family will receive friends at Leavitt Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7:00 - 9:00 and at the church one hour before the service. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the doctors and staff of the Cypress Pointe Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, NC for the loving care they provided "Ms. Daisy" during her time with them.

Terrence Chamberlain, 72, died suddenly at his home in Derbyshire, England, on August 20, 2008. He was born in London on December 12, 1935. He is survived by his devoted wife Ann and two dearly loved sons, Mark (wife Jo) from England and Wayne (wife Suzan) and son Brett from Wilmington, NC.
After serving in the British Army, Terry was a heavy goods transporter throughout Europe for 40 years.
A private service will be held in Derbyshire on September 3, 2008.

Mrs. Wanda E. Walsh Gregory, 84, of Wilmington and formerly of Gordon Lewis Drive, Winnabow, died Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
Mrs. Gregory was born May 21, 1924 in Marion, NC, the daughter of the late Lawrence B and Mary Padgett Walsh. She was preceded in death by her husband Woodie H. Gregory Sr. in 2001. She was a member of the Methodist Faith and had resided at AHEPA at 109 N. Kerr Ave. in Wilmington for several years.
Surviving Mrs. Gregory is her son Roy E. Gregory and wife Carol of Winnabow, daughters, Mary L. Brown and Carolyn Craig both of Winnabow, grandchildren, John and Rickie Stewart of Winnabow, Keri and Jimmy Walker of Wilmington, Michael Smith of Wilmington, great-grandchildren Halie and Kaitlyn Walker of Wilmington and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at the Coble Ward-Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Oleander Chapel, by the Reverend Richard Bowie. The interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Elizabeth Collins Liddicoat, 82, of Wilmington, passed away at her residence on Friday, August 29, 2008.Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Liddicoat and a sister, Kathleen Harper.
She is survived by one daughter, Dale Ann Liddicoat; one son, Gary Liddicoat and his wife Deborah; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, William Collins and one sister, Lucille Collins. Lucile Dorrell Lyon, of Charleston, SC, died August 29, 2008. She was born June 15, 1911 in Duluth, Minnesota, daughter of the late Minnie and James Dorrell. She is the widow of A. F. (Ted) Lyon and was preceded in death by a son, William F. Lyon, Sr. and a grandson, Steven R. Lyon.
She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and a loving grandmother and homemaker.
Lucile is survived by her grandson, William F. Lyon, Jr. and wife, Frances Holbrook Lyon, of Charleston, SC; her granddaughter, Cheryl Ann Lyon-Justice and husband, James Todd Justice, of Charlotte, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Elisabeth Ann Justice and Ally Marie Justice.

Garvin Marion Mercer, 68, of Bolivia, NC, died Friday, August 29th , following a period of declining health.
Born in Brunswick County on May 27, 1940, Mr. Mercer was the son of the late Robert Garvin Mercer and Mrs. Ruby Ludlum Mercer. He was a retired Draw machine operator with Dupont with more than 20 years service.
Surviving are his two daughters, Kimberly Mercer Newman and husband Joe of Winnabow and Marian Louise Mercer of Bolivia; four grandchildren, Lisa, Tina, April and Joey and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Elmer Tally Mercer. A graveside service will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, September 6th at the David Mercer Cemetery in Bolivia with Rev. Mark Murphy and Rev. Mark Millinor officiating.
