Cockman, the deserter, arrested for killing four citizens of Moore County, members of the Home Guard, near 
Carthage, was tried at Moore Court last week, and convicted of murder in the first degree. His Attorney took 
an appeal to the Supreme Court, but the prisoner objected, preferring to be hung rather than remain in prison 
in his wounded condition. The appeal was however taken.-Fayetteville Observer
