DESCENDANTS OF GILES NEWTON
(of Marlboro County, SC, Richmond County, and Hoke County, NC)

Information of the Giles Newton family developed from research of my Norton line. The two families appear to have a connection
which I have not yet discovered. It may be simply that all lived in the same neighborhood. As in all family searches errors may
be made. Please inform me of any corrections or additions you would like to share. Thanks! Myrtle Bridges   March 15, 2013.

BENJAMIN NEWTON CONNECTION TO MARLBORO NEWTONS - A Theory Based on Circumstantial Evidence by Anne Tindall   July 29, 2013 (Bottom of Page)

Post Revolution settlers.
"While Scotsmen were moving into Laurel Hill and Stewartsville, Williamson's Township was getting a more varied
population. Sons and daughters of early settlers in upper Richmond County and Marlboro County (SC) moved into
the Gibson NC area. Isaac Williamson, a veteran of the Revolution (Myrtle's oldest known ancestor), and native
of Sampson County came by way of Marlboro County. Moses Parker and Giles Newton from Marlboro moved to Juniper
Creek in Laurel Hill Township. A few residents left more distant counties. Isham Norton, (another of Myrtle's
ancestors) also a veteran and Starling Rachels hailed from Northampton County, NC. ..."

marriages added by a grandson of Newton, Sr.

Was this Younger Newton married to Judea Parker, daughter of Moses Parker, before he married Nancy Smith?

The 1832 Richmond County NC Estate Records of Moses Parker shows Younger Newton, Sen. married to his
daughter Judea Parker. (Moses Parker and Younger Newton appear on the 1780 Census of Cheraw District,
Marlboro County, SC.)

Moses real estate (740 acres) in the County of Richmond was on the waters of Panther Creek and adjoining the
lands of John Usher and others.

Children of Moses Parker: Sarah Slay wife of Thomas Slay; Easther Leggett wife of William Leggett; Mary Adams
wife of Richard Adams; John Parker; Anna James wife of William James; Beddy Waters wife of James Waters;

Parker; Amanda Parker; Judea Newton wife of Younger Newton, Sen.; Wright Parker and Harris Parker, who are
now (1832) residents of different states.

Daring Burglary and Attempt to Murder
The dwelling house of Mr. Younger Newton, Sen. of Richmond County, near Laurel Hill, was forcibly entered
on Saturday night the 26th January by some villains unknown, and Mr. Newton, an honest inoffensive old man,
beaten on the head with a club in a shocking manner, and left for dead. Mrs. Newton, Mr. Daniel Watson and
wife, and Mr. Philip Parker, (the three last visitors,) were all more or less wounded, but none of them
dangerously. The ruffians then took Mr. Newton's chest, carried it some distance from the house, broke it
open and carried off his papers, nearly $20 in bank notes, a couple of medical books, &c. From another chest,
they took 5 or 6 ladies' dresses, two domestic blankets, &c. The crime was doubtless committed by Negroes, as
Mr. Newton and those in the house with him believed them to be such, and one of the party was seen by a Negro
who says he was black. Between 10 and 12 o'clock of the same night, some strange Negroes were seen passing
Laurel Hill, and going towards Fayetteville. On Sunday, three persons were tracked from the stage road along
the turnpike to Mr. Newton's. The same tracks returned the same way, broke out of the turnpike, and crossed
Jordan's creek on Mr. MacFarland's mill dam, passed through Mr. MacFarland's plantation, and got into the
stage road some distance south of his store house. One of Mr. Newton's papers was found on Sunday evening,
nearly six miles south of Laurel Hill. Nothing has transpired to lead to the detection of the perpetrators
of this most daring outrage; but it is hoped that they may yet be brought to justice. Many circumstances
induce the belief that they came from a distance. Mr. Newton is pronounced by his physician to be in a fair
way of recovery. Carolina Observer, (Fayetteville, NC) February 05, 1833

BENJAMIN NEWTON CONNECTION TO MARLBORO NEWTONS
A theory based on circumstantial evidence

Anne Gibson Tindall's strong hunch (and it may be incorrect!) regarding this family of a Benjamin Newton
who's family line is in Richmond County, North Carolina. This Benjamin, MAY be the son of Younger Sr., son
of Giles found in Marlboro County, SC as Younger's son Benjamin is noted as "went to Indiana". Benjamin
Newton disappears from records found at this point (June 2011) in Richmond, Scotland, and Marlboro County.

In several secondary sources it is reported that Benjamin Newton b. 1799 to Younger Newton Sr. & Elizabeth
Cargill of Marlboro County, South Carolina "went to Indiana".

This is found in
1. the typed copy of Younger Sr.'s Bible (found on Ancestry.com) "Old Southern Bible Records". Bible was
owned by Hope Hull Newton who was a grandson of Younger, Sr. through Younger's son Cornelius.
2.	Henry Covington Newton's handwritten account completed in 1928. He was a grandson of Younger, Sr. through
Younger, Jr.
3.	Julia Claire Pate's book, "Pate-Adams-Newton and Allied Families" published in 1958 She was the 2nd great
granddaughter of Younger, Sr.

My reasons for thinking this is either incorrect information or information about Benjamin before he went to
Indiana is missing:
1.	It is noted in the typed copy of Younger, Sr.'s Bible that "[marriages added by a grandson of Newton, Sr.]
The brackets are what lead me to believe the "went to Indiana" may be something that was verbally passed down
thru the generations and perhaps was relayed by someone at a much later date who was relying on memory. The
Bible record indicates beside Benjamin's name [went to Ind.] It is apparent that all information in this typed
copy found in brackets have been added several generations later. Most likely both Henry Covington Newton (who
shows a question mark after his "went to Indiana") and Julia Claire Pate used the Bible as their source.

I feel, at this time and until proof surfaces otherwise, that Benjamin Newton, son of Younger, Sr. did not go to
Indiana from his father's home (he may have gone later) but instead married and moved to Richmond County, NC.
The following is the basis for my belief.

1820 Census, Richmond County, North Carolina (enumeration August 7, 1820)
Benjamin Newton Family 1 male under 10 years
	Benjamin, b. 1799 would have been 21 in 1820 1 male age 16 and under 26
	1 female age 16 and under 26
This family was counted between William Wallace and William Burns [Younger Newton (age 45 and up {Younger of
Marlboro County would have been about 57} with one slave was counted after William Burns). Younger Newton of
Marlboro County probably moved to Richmond County in 1820 after his wife died.

[NOTE: This Benjamin Newton quite possibly is Younger Newton, Sr.'s son. Born in 1799, he would have been abt 21
years of age in the 1820 Census, if his reported birth month is July. There is a Younger Newton in the 1850 Census
of Richmond County, Wolf Pit Township showing the family of Younger Newton, age 30, born in North Carolina. This
places Younger Newton's birth as 1820 making him the son of Benjamin. This Richmond County Younger and his wife,
Mary, had a son, Benjamin, age 5, on the 1850 Census. I believe that this Younger is the son of Benjamin of the 1820
Census. Members of this Benjamin's family have been searching for his father and Newton upline. It is my (agt)
hypothesis that this may be the connection.

Now as to Benjamin, son of Younger Newton, Sr. going to Indiana - that is quite possible. I have not found Benjamin
Newton in Richmond County, North Carolina nor Marlboro County, South Carolina after the 1820 Census. Perhaps his wife
died and he left for Indiana. His son Younger (based on my belief), also is not found in the census. Maybe he (Younger)
was living with relatives if his mother had died and his father left the state or perhaps he and his mother were living
