  Generation No. 1
1. LEWIS22 JERNIGAN, JR (LEWIS21, WILLIAM20, WILLIAM19, THOMAS18 JERNEGAN, THOMAS17, THOMAS16,
THOMAS15, GEORGE14, JOHN13, EDWARD12, JOHN11, JOHN10, THOMAS9, JOHN8, JOHN7, PETER6, WALTER5, HUGH4,
HUBERT3, HUBERT FITZ2, HORHAM1) was born Abt. 1790 in Scotland County, NC, and died Abt. 1837 in
Guilford County, NC. He married ZILPHA SANFORD, daughter of NOAH SANDERFORD and SARAH CASEY.
She was born Abt. 1790 in Richmond County, NC, and died Abt. 1837 in Guilford County, NC.

Notes for LEWIS JERNIGAN, JR:
From Frank Jernigan:Theories, ideas and random thoughts.

The first location that I have on Lewis is in Richmond Co., NC and this is only second hand; his oldest children
claim to have been born there. As for Lewis himself it is safe to assume that he was either a "local boy,
" born in Anson or Richmond, or he was from "off yonder," Johnson Co. or some other Jernigan area.
If he was from "off yonder" the possibilities are too many for me to consider now but if he was from
that area then they are rather limited.

The Jernigan families that I know of in Anson-Richmond Cos. 1780-1800 Are:

1. Old David, the Regulator
2. William Sr. who married Margaret (Peggy) Evans around 1810 moved to Tennessee.
3. Samuel Sr. who Rachael Hand and was first in Richmond Co, then moved to Anson Co.
4. Ezekiel, who gave"Bill" Worley the "slip" in Chesterfield Co., SC and
hasn't been heard from since.
5. The possibility that either Jean Jarnigan who married James Terry, Jr. or Hannah Journigan
who Champ Terry were widows with a son Lewis, when they married the Terrys.
I believe Lewis was born ca. 1790 and Old David was getting quite old to have a new son by
then (unless Old David was carrying around a young grandson by an unaccounted for son.)
A Tennessee History says that William, Sr had 7 sons but Anson Co. Census shows only six and
we think we can account for all of these.

The family of Samuel, Sr. is well accounted for and no Lewis there. We can't account for any
family of Ezekiel. I just don't believe Lewis was born in Scotland.

I believe Lewis was born ca. 1790 as the Randolph Co Census for 1830 lists him between 30 and 40.
This Census also shows Zilpha as between 40 and 50, which might be an error as she has 3 sons after
this Census, up to April 1835. However I will assume that the ages are approximately correct as I
have nothing else to go by.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:

1. Old David Jernigan, the Regulator
David was in Anson Co., NC prior to Sept 4, 1770 when he sold his property in Johnston Co., NC to David Lee.
He was on the east side of the Pee Dee River near the "head of navigation" and I believe that he
was a "turpentiner" or in the Naval Stores business. The 1790 census of Richmond Co., NC lists
David with 2 males over 16 and 2 females. According to several researchers these are Old David, probably
the oldest son of Capt Jesse Jernigan of Robeson Co., and his son Samuel (Later Samuel Sr. or Anson Co.)
born 11/19/1771. These two females were Jean (Jane), born 1/12/1774 and Johannah (Joanna) born 7/19/1776.
Both married Terrys on 8/24/1790. No sign of Lewis here.

2. William Jernigan, Sr. and Margaret (Peggy) Evans
The first record that I have found for William is a land grant to him for r210 A. in Anson Co.
This grant was on the east side of Pee Dee River, now Richmond Co, between the present village of
Cordova and U.S. Hwy 74. In 1797 he bought 140 A in Anson Co. on the west side of the Pee Dee and
in 1799 he sold all or part of his original grant, which was then in Richmond Co. He then gave his
place of residence as Anson Co.

The 1790 census of Richmond Co., NC shows William Jernigan: 1 male over 16; 5 males under 16, 3
females. We believe that these are:

    1. William Sr.
    2. Jesse b. Apr 4, 1775
    3. William J b. June 4, 1777
    4. David b. Sept 26, 1782
    5. Thomas b. ca. 1788
    6. Britton or Braden (don't know where he fits in at)

Then there is Henry, b. between 1794 and 1800.

Goodspeed Publishing Co., in a History of Tennessee says that William, Sr and Peggy had 7 sons.
As far as I know no one has proved or disproved this seventh son. William Sr and 6 sons moved to
	 Robertson Co, Tenn 1807-1820.

This seventh son is the subject of the most of my Jernigan research at this time, and about
the only "lead" that I have is a "Quaker connection."
William Sr. first settled in Anson Co., ca. 1769 and although he was, or became, Methodist,
several of his neighbor families were Quakers. (Mooremans, Hayles, Almonds, et al) His son
David, who married Mary Hinson, daughter of Benjamin Hinson had a land grant near the Quaker
Cemetery in Anson Co. Another son, Thomas, married Nancy Diggs, daughter of Plesant Diggs, a
former Quaker and his first wife, a Hinson. Plesant married secondly Elizabeth Jernigan,
daughter of William Sr. William, Jr. married Lucy Tarver.

When another son, (I believe it was Jesse) got his first land in Tennessee, it adjoined that
of a present or former Quaker. You will notice how closely our Lewis associated with the Quakers.

The following excerpt is from the files of Mr. Frank Jernigan of Sumter, South Carolina.

"Lewis and Zilpha (or Zeltha) were probably married in Richmond County, North Carolina ca.
1818 or 1819 as James, the first child, was born there December 29, 1820. They seem to have lived
in Richmond until 1827 when they moved to near Ashboro in Randolph County, North Carolina, In 1832
they were in the Northwest corner of Randolph County and in February 1834 they were in Southwest
	  Guilford County. "

The last word that I have on Lewis is when he was brought into Guilford County Court in February 1834.
The next record of any of this family is in November 1837 when the Court apprenticed my grandfather to
Charles Starbuck and listed him as an orphan.

It seems to me that Lewis either died between 1835 and 1837 or he abandoned his family and headed for
Florida, Indiana or "someplace else ". Zilpha probably died around this same time.
James must have taken over the family as it seems that he tried to raise Louis, but he ran away.
Eliab was living with him in 1850. James married Hannah Benson in 1845 when he was on the Sheriff's
list of Insolvents for that year.

Sometime around 1840 Travis, who was just getting big enough to be some help to James,
"lit out " back to Richmond County where he had not lived since he was 5 years old.
The only reason that I can think of for him to go back to Richmond County was that he had a grandmother
	 or other near relatives there.

When Louis ran away from James he too headed for Richmond County and Travis, and who else?
This was most certainly their Mother's old home, if not their Father's.

The location of the homes of the women that these two young men, Travis and Louis, married could
be a good clue as to where they were reared and possibly by whom. Their courting almost had to
be within walking distance or an easy mule ride from their home (homes).

Catherine McLean, Louis' first wife, lived about 2 1/2 3 miles east of Ellerbe, and her family were members
of Ellerbe Springs Presbyterian Church (now First Presbyterian Church, Ellerbe, NC.) Louis was a member here,
but don't know when he joined or left.

Harmony Church, originally built on John D. McLean's land, was moved around 1802-1803 to what is now
the site of Ellerbe Town Cemetery. It remained there until about 1855 when a large frame church was built on
the hillside above Ellerbe Springs. The name of the church remained "Harmony Presbyterian Church" until the
1880's when the congregation of the church requested Fayetteville Presbytery to change the name to "Ellerbe
Springs Presbyterian Church". Around 1928-1930, a brick church was built inside the corporate limits of the
Town of Ellerbe, NC. The old frame building was torn down after the congregation moved into the new church building.
Thus Ellerbe Springs Presbyterian Church became First Presbyterian Church, Ellerbe, NC.

Judith O'Brien, Travis' first wife, lived somewhere around Green Lakes
Church, which is approximately 3 miles southeast of Ellerbe.

A close search of the Fair Grounds District of Richmond County, North Carolina 1830 - 1850 might
give us some answers as to just who Lewis and Zilpha were.

The Court Clerks spelled his name Jonakin which is probably the way he pronounced it and I doubt
if he could tell them any better. Someone, most likely Zilpha, taught the children to spell
their name as it sounded - Journagan. This name was fairly common back in the old home community
in Richmond County where the Jernigans and the Terrys tried to see how many times they could inter-marry.
One thing more that I will mention is the association of Lewis Jernigan and his family with Quakers.
There was Eliab Jackson who went from Marlboro County, South Carolina (or possibly Richmond County,
North Carolina) to Randolph and Guilford County. Lewis seemed to follow him. William Louis,
his son, was apprenticed to a Quaker, Starbuck, and the Bensons were Quakers in Indiana and
probably before they left North Carolina.

In order to try to get a clearer look at the little that I know about my great-grandfather,
Lewis Jernigan, I am listing, first: what I feel is known about him and then a few theories of my own.
Mrs. Ethel Elmer of Route 5, Harrison, Ark (now deceased) gave me a list of the children of
	 this family.  They were: James, born 1830; Travis Christenbury, born 1822; Sarahan, born 1825;
Eliza Jane born 1827; Lewis, born 1830 (my grandfather); Andrew, born 1833 and Eliab, born 1835.
The death certificate of Eliab (Eli), filed in Indiana, gave the names of his parents as Louis
Journigan, born in Scotland and Zeltha Sanderford.

The 1830 Census of Randolf Co, NC page 32, line 4, lists Lewis Jarnican with 2 males age 10/15
	 and 1 male 30/40; 1 female under 5, and 1 between 5 and 10 and 1 between 40 and 50. This fits
all the children except Travis who was only 8 and not between 10 and 15. Still, it is about as
good as census records go. Also in Randolph Co, NC the "Overseer of Roads" book lists
Lewis Jonakin to work on the roads at various times from May 1827 through May 1832. This seems to be
on one section of roads in 1827 and 1828, another in 1829 and still another in 1831 and 1832. In 1827
and 1828 he is along with Myal O'Bryan and in 1831 and 1832 he is with Eliab Jackson.

The Guilford County, NC Appearance Docket, February 1834, lists the case of "J. Daniel to the
use of Sidney Porter vs. Lewis Jonakin. " The Court Minutes for February 1834, same case, show
that Eliab Jackson as special bail surrendered Lewis Jonakin, defendant and he was "Admitted
to take the Oath of Insolvency "

Additional information concerning Lewis deals with the possibly that his wife's parents may be James
Sanderford and Judith Peele. However, Frank Jernigan can offer no proof for this. This is just
information that he has been told.

One interesting side note is that Fannie Jernigan who married Harris Barfield is buried in the
Peeles Cemetery at the Scotland Co, SC and Richmond Co, NC line. Fannie Jernigan is the
daughter of Travis Christenbury Jernigan, son of Lewis and Zilpha Jernigan.

NOTES FROM SAY CASEY, JR.

Birth, NC, ABT 1790
Death, Guilford Co NC, ABT 1837
Son of William Jernigan Sr. and of Margaret "Peggy " ??.

Census, 1820.
Census, 1830, Randolph Co NC, p32: Lewis Jarnican, males (2) 10-15, (1) 30-40, females (1) 5, (1) 5-10,
(1) 40-50.
Census, 1840.

The most likely parents of Lewis Jernigan are William and Margaret (Peggy) Jernigan who had land
grants in Anson and Richmond Cos in the late 1700's but who then sold everything and moved to TN
in the early 1800's. An early TN history says that Wm and Peggy had seven sons, but the Anson Co
NC census only lists six of them.
Lewis lived portions of his life in Anson, Richmond, Randolph, and Guilford Counties in NC.
He appears in records as having worked on the roads in those areas. His literacy was probably
limited, at best, and he may have subsisted very close to the poverty level.
The Death Certificate of his youngest son, Eliab (Eli) Journigan, filed in Indiana, gave the names
of his parents as Louis Journigan, born in Scotland and Zeltha Sanderford.
Lewis Jernigan and Zilpha Sanderford (probably the daughter of Noah Sanderford and Nancy Casey,
daughter of Jeremiah), were probably married in Richmond Co NC about 1818 or 1819 as James, the
first child, was born there on Dec 29, 1820. They seem to have lived in Richmond until 1827 when
they moved to near Ashboro in Randolph Co and in Feb 1834 they were in southwest Guilford Co.
The last word on Lewis was when he was brought into Guilford Co Court in Feb 1834 for insolvency.
The next record of any of his family is in Nov 1837 when the Court apprenticed William Louis (son
of Lewis b 1830) to Charles Starbuck [Quaker] and listed him as an orphan.
Sarahan, b. 1825 daughter of Lewis, married John M. Benson [Quaker] They moved to Indiana, lived
with Quakers, and are both buried in a Quaker cemetery there.
REFERENCE: Info from Barry Hedden, descendant.
Another source thinks Zilpha may be the daughter of James Sanderford and Judith Peele.

Notes for JAMES JOURNAGAN:
The following is an excerpt from the files of Mr. Frank Jernigan of Sumter, SC.

"The oldest child of Lewis and Zilpha was James, born in 1820. In 1845, James married Hannah
Benson of Guilford County, NC, who, I believe, was the daughter of Jesse and Hannah Benson.
The 1850 Census of Guilford County, Southern Division lists James Jonakin born in Richmond County,
NC with Hannah, his wife and daughter, Sarah, 3 and son, Curlite, 1, Eliab, born in Guilford County,
NC, youngest brother of James is also in this home.
In 1860 this family is in Washington Township (Westfield Post Office) Hamilton County, Indiana
with Sarah, 13; James, 9; Rachel, 2, all born in North Carolina and Travis, 1, born in Indiana
	 around 1858.
In 1870 James and Hannah are in Sugar Loaf Township (Harrison Post Office), Boone, Ark.
	 The children listed are: Sarah, 22; born in North Carolina; James, 18; Rachel, 12; Travis, 9;
and Edgar, 6. James and the younger children are all listed as born in Indiana which would
indicate that they moved there between 1863 and 1870.
James and his family spelled their name Journagan. "

She was born March 14, 1827 in Richmond County, NC. He married (3) LYDIA CAULDER Aft. 1870.
She was born 1846, and died May 31, 1910 in Clio, SC.

Notes for TRAVIS CHRISTENBURY JERNIGAN:
THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXCERPT FROM THE FILES OF MR. FRANK JERNIGAN OF SUMTER, SC

"Travis Christenbury Jernigan, second child of Lewis and Zilpha, was born in 1822. One of his
grandsons told me that Travis was born in Richmond County, NC "somewhere above Rockingham. "
The 1850 Census of Richmond Co, Fair Grounds District (now Ellerbe) lists Travis with wife Judith
and sons Wesley, 7; James, 5; Dennis, 3 and John, 1. I have never found another reference to
John so I assume that he died young. The death certificate of James Stacy Jernigan in 1931 in
Robeson County, NC gives his mother's name as Murelen ? O'Brian and the death certificate for
his sister, Mrs. Christian Ann Currie in 1917 gives her mother's name as Anna ---. Since
she (Judith) was alive and probably gave the information for the 1850 Census, I am inclined
to believe her name was Judith; but all agree that she was an O'Brian or O'Bryan from around
Green Lake Church in Richmond County, NC.
Christian Ann (Or Christianna) was their youngest child so Judith lived until after May 23, 1856
but died before June 24, 1860 when Travis married for the second time.
It was reported to Frank Jernigan by Berry Jernigan that Judith died in childbirth.
His second wife was Elizabeth C. Snead, daughter of Samuel Snead of the Snead's Grove section of
Richmond County. They had two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth and Fannie and one son, Younger.
Travis married a third time to Lydia Caulder.

Mrs. W.R. McIntosh of Rockingham, daughter of E.B. O'Brian and granddaughter of Dennis O'Brian
said she had heard her father speak of Travis Jernigan many times - called him "Cousin Travis "
or "Uncle Travis ", she could not remember which. "

NOTES FROM A CONVERSATION BETWEEN FRANK JERNIGAN AND ERNEST BARFIELD

"Ernest Barfield, son of Harris Barfield and Fannie Jernigan has a picture of Travis Jernigan
and his wife, Betty (Elizabeth). He states that Travis and Betty lived near Old Hundred, NC where
he owned 100 acres of land which he later sold to John Woodward for $100.00. "

NOTES FROM A CONVERSATION BETWEEN FRANK JERNIGAN AND MRS. ELIZABETH JERNIGAN BEASLEY.

"Mrs. Elizabeth Jernigan Beasley (daughter of Younger Patterson Jernigan) remembers Travis
as "a man of medium frame who wore a full beard. He had worked in the turpentine
business before moving to Old Hundred, and he had a large farm there but sold out after
Elizabeth died and moved to Clio, SC. She has heard Travis brag about how much cord wood
he could cut in a day. "

NOTES FROM A CONVERSATION BETWEEN FRANK JERNIGAN AND EDWIN M JERNIGAN

"Edwin M Jernigan states that Travis died at the home of his son Dennis on August 29, 1910
of typhoid fever. Travis and his wife attended the old Green Lakes Church a few miles above
Rockingham. His second wife, Elizabeth Snead is probably buried at McColl, SC as they there
lived for a long time. "

Travis served in Co. K 33d N.C. Inf.

Travis is buried in the Stewartsville cemetery in Scotland County, NC. There is evidence of an
old grave marker near the grave of Dennis Jernigan in the Old Stewartsville Cemetery. This
could be Travis' grave.

EXCERPT FROM "RICHMOND COUNTY HERITAGE, NORTH CAROLINA 1995 "

Sources: History of Green Lake United Methodist Church
"The idea for Green Lake Church originated during a "brush arbor revival " held near
the location of the present church. The revival meeting was held during the summer of 1854.
Rev. Lemon Shell did the preaching and James O'Brien led the singing and praying.
     At the end of the meeting, members of Bear Branch, a frame structure 1 and 1/2 miles south;
Pleasant Hill, a log structure five miles east; and Zoar, a log structure 3 and 1/2 miles
north decided to come into one church.
On October 2, 1855 a site of land, approximately three acres, was purchased from R.J. Steele
for $1.00. The deed was made to Bryan Lovin and trustees of the church. A contract was let
for the building to Tillman Dunn. Robert Webb and M.R. McDonald did most of the work. The
structure was completed in 1856 at a cost of approximately $600.00.
It is said that Dennis O'Brien picked the name for the new church an Irish name
for "Green Lakes " no one could pronounce. It drifted into simple Green Lake.
The church was remodeled in 1919. Afterwards, the congregation held
a "picnic on the grounds " to celebrate. This started the custom of an annual
homecoming, always on the first Sunday in August.

The church presently has 88 members. "

and died May 09, 1898. She married JOHN M. BENSON October 17, 1839, son of JESSE BENSON and HANNAH.

Notes for JOHN M. BENSON:
NOTES FROM THE FILES OF FRANK JERNIGAN

The first recod that I have of this couple is their marriage bond, dated 17 Oct. 1839 in
Guilford County, NC I have been told that Sarahan was the daughter of Lewis and Zilpha
Jernigan and I believe that John was the son of Jesse and Hannah Benson of Guilford County.
The names of this couple appear on the 1830 census of Guilford County, Southern Division.
John is shown as a farmer, 33 years old, born in Guilford County, Sarah A. is 25 years old,
born in Richmond County, NC. They list the following children, all born in Guilford County.
	 Zilpha C., age 9; Franklin S., age 5; Hannah D., age 3; and William P., age 3/12 yrs.
They are in Hamilton County, Indiana for the 1860 census, near Westfield in Washington Township
where John is again listed as a farmer. Their children are Cordilla (Zilpha C.?), age 15; William,
age 10; Hannah, age 13; Anir M, age 7; Jesse W., age 4; and Cynthia, age 2. The 1870 census is
about the same. Cordilla is missing (probably married) and two more boys are shown: James J.,
age 9 and Henry T., age 8. In the 1880 census, John and Sarah A. are still in Washington Township.
All the children are gone except James J. (Jesse?), age 19 and Henry T., age 17. However William is
living nearby with wife, Ruth L. and two children: Lilly R., age 5 and George W., age 2.
Anir (Aunis) is the first child born in Indiana so they must have left North Carolina after
1850 and gotten to Indiana by 1853.

She was born August 01, 1817 in Richmond County, NC, and died August 02, 1897 in Adele, GA.
He married (2) MARY JONES Bef. 1873, daughter of LEVI JONES and MARTHA FINKLEA. She was born
October 10, 1841 in Marion County, SC, and died November 11, 1905 in Marion County, SC.

Notes for WILLIAM LOUIS JERNIGAN:
The following is an excerpt from the files of Mr. Frank Jernigan of Sumter, South Carolina.

"The fifth child of Lewis and Zilpha Jernigan was my grandfather, William Louis, born 1830
probably in Randolph County, North Carolina. In the November 1837 term of Court in Guilford County,
he was an orphan and apprenticed to a man named Charles Starbuck. ("Hinshaw" lists
Charles Starbuck as a Quaker). This apprenticeship arrangement evidently didn't last too long
as Louis told my father that he was reared by his older brother, James, but James was cruel to
	 him and he ran away.

On June 10, 1850 Louis Journagan got a marriage bond (he signed the bond Louis Journagan)
in Richmond County, North Carolina to marry Catherine McLean, daughter of Duncan McLean and
Sarah Elizabeth Currie McLean. (Corrections made to the previous sentence on November 24, 2001. Catherine
is the daughter of Duncan McLean and Sarah Elizabeth Currie McLean, and the grand daughter of John D. McLean.)
Louis and "Katie" had four children: Sarah Jane,
born 1851, Duncan Cornelius, born 1853, Hector Martin, born 1856, and John Calvin, born 1857.
Around 1870 Louis and "Katie" separated and Louis set out for Florida. He only
got as far as Marion County, South Carolina where he went to work and in 1873 he married Mary Jones,
daughter of Levi and Martha Finklea Jones, and went to work farming with his father-in-law.
In Marion County he used his first name, William, or just his initials, W. L.
William Louis and Mary (Polly) had four children: Levi Franklin, born 1873 (my father),
Annie, born 1876, Willis James, born 1878, and William Walter, born 1889."

Notes for ELIAB JOURNIGAN:
The following excerpt is from the files of Mr. Frank Jernigan of Sumter, South Carolina.

"Eliab was the youngest child of Lewis and Zilpha Jernigan. He was born on April 24, 1835 in
Guilford County, North Carolina and I feel that he was named for Eliab Jackson, neighbor and
	 benefactor of his father.
In the 1850 census of Guilford County he is in the home of his oldest brother, James. I have
found nothing more on him until July 21, 1861 when (as Eli Journigan) he joined Co. K, 11th Regiment,
Indiana Volunteer Infantry, where he served until July 25, 1865. He married Rebecca Jane, daughter
of Francis and Rachel Freeman Albin in Henry County, Indiana on November 2, 1865. They lived in
Hamilton County, Indiana from 1865 - 1870; in Henry County from 1870 -1885; in Randolph County

Notes for JOHN WESLEY JERNIGAN:
The following is an excerpt from the notes of a conversation between Frank Jernigan of Sumter, SC
and Miss Ruby Jernigan of Fayettesville, NC.

"She is the daughter of John Wesley and Almenia Jane McCormack Jernigan. Her grandfather was
Travis Jernigan and she thinks that her grandmother was a Sanford before she married. Katie and Marvin
(children of Dennis, son of Travis) say their grandmother was an O'Brien. The death certificate
	of J.S. Jernigan confirms this.
She said that Martha Jernigan who married Bill Wilson was next to John Wesley in age.
John Wesley was born January 1, 1844 and died April 4, 1921 in a Veteran's Home at Sanford, NC
and is buried at Smyrna Church near John's Station, NC. She thinks Travis and Elizabeth had a
son, John, but I believe this is the son of Louis and Katie who lived with Younger and Travis
at McColl, SC for a while."
Alemena Jane McCormack Jernigan is buried in the East Side Cemetery (Oak Gr), Maxton, NC.

Notes for YOUNGER PATTERSON JERNIGAN:
The following excerpt is from a conversation between Berry (Christenbury) Jernigan of St. Pauls,
North Carolina and Frank Jernigan of Sumter, South Carolina.

"He is the son of Younger and Josephene Stanley Jernigan - grandson of Travis Christenbury
and Elizabeth Snead Jernigan. Josephene was the daughter of Tom Stanley who lived at the old
Ida Mill, near Richmond Mill, North Carolina.
He said that Travis had a brother, Louis, who lived near Green Sea, South Carolina and a brother,
Frank, who taught school in Columbus County, North Carolina. Frank had two or three boys who lived
in Columbus County. Travis lived near Rockingham and his first wife ------- O'Brian died in childbirth.
Berry lived with his father in McColl, South Carolina until about 1910 when they moved to a farm a
few miles east of St. Pauls. While they lived in McColl, John Jernigan (son of Louis and Katie)
lived with them until around 1908 or 1909 when he went to Rockingham. This John ran a small
store at both McColl and Rockingham. He had previously lived in Georgia, but could not get
along with his wife so he came back. This was the father of John Jernigan who was murdered
by Freeman, while he was working at Iseman Mill at McColl, South Carolina."
