Descendants of Unknown MCNAIR

Generation No. 1

1. FNU2 MCNAIR (FNU1)

Notes for FNU MCNAIR:
The suggestion that Neil's and Alexander's father was named Edward has been made but is far from proven.
Anyway,... The source is a version about the antecedents of Neill from Alex McCollum, 3912 Berkshire Ave.,
Memphis TN 38108. He credits Kinloch McCollum, who was researching the McCollum family, who in turn got
it from someone else in Miss., name I didn't get, who was interested in the McNairs. The information
included a tree showing Eorn (John) McNair, his three sons Neil, Edward, and a third whose name was unknown
but who had a son named Malcolm, a preacher. [The grandson Malcolm would be the Malcom McNair born
August 24, 1776 in Robeson Co, NC, the younger child of John McNair and his 2nd wife Catherine Buie McFarland.
There is an extensive genealogy of this family of the net: http://www.carolshouse.com/page1.htm.]

This source, together with James Birtley McNair's McNair Genealogies..., and the local history mentioned down
below under Matthew Watson McNair all assert that Neill and the Alexander McNair who moved down to Simpson Co.,
Miss. were brothers. That Neill and Alexander were brothers is supported by the 1882 Richmond Co. NC estate
record of Catherine McNair. After bequests to various neighbors and churches, there was enough left over so
that her executor, Neill McNair Smith, was obliged to track down and list the heirs-at-law. These proceedings
are reproduced by Myrtle N. Bridges in Estate Records 1772-1933, Richmond Co. North Carolina, Book II.
Neill McNair Smith listed: 1) the children of Alexander McNair, names unknown, who reside in Mississippi; 2)
various children and grandchildren (listed, and noted below) of Neill McNair; 3) a few other people whose relation
I don't yet know yet: Gilbert and Alexander McNair, Alabama; Mrs. John Fairly, Richmond Co.; Daniel McLauren,
Miss.; L.L. McLauren and John M. McLauren, S.C.; Evander McKay, Miss.; Ann Graham, wife of Noah Graham, Miss.;
R.N. Fairly, Richmond Co.; and Mrs. M.A. McEachern, Robeson Co.

Children of FNU MCNAIR are:
2.	i.	NEILL3 MCNAIR, b. 1773; d. January 1856.
3.	ii.	ALEXANDER MCNAIR, b. 1774, Argyleshire, SCOTLAND; d. 1850.
	iii.	CATHERINE MCNAIR, b. 1805; d. November 30, 1882, ,,Richmond, Nc, US.

Generation No. 2

2. NEILL3 MCNAIR (FNU2, FNU1) was born 1773, and died January 1856. He married MARGARET PATTERSON.
She died Bet. 1819 - 1850.

Notes for NEILL MCNAIR:
Richmond Co., nc
Census data: 1810-1850 Richmond Co., NC. In 1790, Neill McNair would have been only 20, according to
Birtley McNair, 17 acc. to the 1850 census, so not sure that's he in the early censuses.

There are lots of Neills down in Richmond Co. One hint as to which is which is that ours seemed to refer to himself
as Neill McN. Esq. There was a suit brought by Matthew W. McNair (Neill's oldest son) and John C. Smith against Thorogood
Pate about a debt. NcNair and Smith (Matthew's sister Miriam's husband) had a store located at Neill McNair's place at
Springfield, and Pate was another merchant. The proceedings are in Myrtle Bridges, Our Native Heath, p. 73. Neill is
referred to as Esq. here. Elsewhere in the same book, Neill McN. Esq. reported for jury duty, Mar. 1844,
p. 85. Also, there is a death announcement for James Lock McNair, 12-year-old son of Neill McN. Esq., who died Dec 25, 1827.

The 1810 census entry for Neill McNair Esq., p. 212, reports two males b. 1800-10, one male 1765-84, three females
b. 1800-10, and one female b. 1765-84. Also interesting about 1810 census entry is that Neill is reported consecutively
with Alexander, by several accounts Neill's brother.

The 1850 Census entry, Williamson District, Richmond Co., shows Neill (77), Jane (50), Harriet (17), Miriam (15),
Archibald Patterson (35), and John C. McNair (32). Harriet and Miriam are Jane's daughters, mentioned in her 1875 will.

Some info about Neill comes from McNair, M'Near, and M'Neir Genealogies by James Birtley McNair (I read somewhere
that there was a 1970 addendum to this), 8 volumes, 315 pages, illustrated (Chicago 1923-8). Birtley McNair's
contributor about this family was John F. McNair, son of Matthew Watson McN. Neill b. Argyllshire, Scotland, came
to NC age 4, with brother Alexander, in 1777, according to this source. Birtley McNair says that it was he who
discovered that Alexander and Neill were brothers, gives no basis and I have yet to find any, although Neill and
Alexander were consecutive entries in the 1810 census. The 1850 census, in which Neill was reported as 77, verifies
birth year 1773.

I have a couple of pages from what looks like a local history (presumably Scotland Co.) which also says Neill and
Alexander were brothers. I don't know what the name of this source is, but it suggests that John F. McNair, the
subject of the article, was still alive at writing, so before 1927.

Neill's Dec. 1855 (executed 1858) Richmond Co. will available, I veiw it in Myrtle N. Bridges' book Final Words,
772 Original Wills..... Myrtle reports in a footnote that Miriam was the wife of John C. Smith, Sarah wife of
William Gibson, and Ann Eliza the wife of Warner Chance, the latter's children Sarah Margaret, John, Cornelius
and Agnes Jane Chance. Gives names of daughter Miriam Smith's son, Neill McNair Smith; he suggests that Neill McNair
Smith had sisters, but does not name them. Mentions daughter Sarah Gibson, who had no children at the time; mentions
daughter Ann Eliza Chance (dec'd); grandson Neill A. McNair (turns out to be Matthew's son); son John C. McNair;
daughter Jane McNair; son Matthew W(atson) McNair; dau. Catherine McNeill. Jane got the bulk of Neill's estate,
which was substantial, although previous gifts to Matthew and daughter Sarah Smith's family were mentioned.

Location of Neill's house mentioned in a discussion of boundaries of school districts, ca. 1840 (Bridges, Our
Native Heath, and at the Richmond Co. Genweb site): "...four hundred and forty eight chains to a corner in a
bay below Neill McNair's house west side of Gum Swamp, thence north eleven degrees west passing a few yards west
of Neill McNair's house and east of Godfrey Huccaby's and west of Mrs. Patterson's four hundred and forty eight chains..."

More definite location from an 1886 map included with one of Myrtle Bridges books, Our Native Heath. Neill McNair
gave daughter Jane most of his estate; she in turn willed it to her two daughters Miriam and Harriet and their husbands
Shockley L. Gibson and Nathan T. Gibson. The location of the residences of two Gibson families, one of which is labeled
S.L. Gibson, is shown on the 1886 map on either side of the road now called St. John's Church Rd., about a half mile
southwest of Old Rockingham Rd. This would correspond with the location of the "Shockley Gibson Cemetary" mentioned
in notes for Jane.

The local history I mention above states that Alexander and Neill lived 1 and a half miles apart in Scotland Co., thus
repeating Birtley McNair. So I'm not sure this is an independent source. In any case, the history says that Neill's
house was still standing and occupied; history was written 1927 at latest.

It appears that the family attended the Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church, as all the children of Matthew Watson McN.,
at least all those still alive Feb. 16 1857, were baptized that date. Also various Patterson and Lytch relatives. This
church was located 20 miles east of Rockingham directly on the road leading from Rockingham to Lumberton.

It's possible that this Neill was a member of the NC House of Commons, as the lower house was called at the time. There
is a letter reproduced in The North Carolina Colonial Bar, by Ernest Hamlin Alderman (online), concerning a boundary
dispute between Rchmond and Robeson counties, addressed to Thomas Steele, member of the state senate, and HW Harington
and Neil McNair, members of the Commons from Richmond Co, in 1817, by L. Macalister, apparently the county surveyor for Richmond.

Notes for MARGARET PATTERSON:
Assumed dead by 1850, as she did not appear with the family in the census that year.

James Patterson's 1819 will is reproduced in Myrtle Bridges Final Words.... This James is assumed to be Margaret's
father just because he mentions a daughter Margaret married to a Neill McNair. How many can there be? Mentions that
oldest son is Alexander; second son John; that Mary McD. Shaw is his first-born daughter; that Margaret is his second
daughter; Jenet third; Nancy fourth; Sarah Jr youngest daughter; mentions land west of Beaver Dam on Gum Swamp; that
Samuel Watson Patterson was his third son; that James Patterson Jr. was his fourth and youngest son. Witnessed by John
and Alexander McNair. All info about James Patterson's family taken from this will, unless otherwise noted.

3. ALEXANDER3 MCNAIR (FNU2, FNU1) was born 1774 in Argyleshire, SCOTLAND, and died 1850. He married EFFIE LITTLE.

Notes for ALEXANDER MCNAIR:
Simpson Co, MS
Info about family of Alexander McNair from James Birtley McNair, M'Nair, M'Near, and Mcneir Genealogies. Lived near
Elmore NC, about a mile and a half from brother Neill, moved to Miss. in 1850. Source gives wife's name, names of
children. Data submitted by Alex's son Thomas.

The move down to Miss. must have been between 1830 and 1840. Alex'dr appears in the 1840 census in Simpson Co. in
1840, and an Alexander, presumed this one, is in Laurel Hilll Twp., Richmond Co., in 1830. The latter is consecutive
with Roderick. [This Alexander had a son Roderick.] Furthermore, Alex's daughter had kids b. as early as 1843 in Simpson Co.

Further (unverified) info from Alex McCollum, Memphis: Neill's brother Alexander's (and therefore Neill's) father was
named Edward, and it was this generation who brought the family from Scotland. He came here when Alexander was three
and, according to the LDS, Alexander was born around 1774. Thus the move was around 1777. And he (Edward) came with
a least two brothers, who would therefore have been our Neill's uncles. One of those brothers was himself named Neill
(married to Margaret Martin), and the other, whose name is not known by the compiler, was the father of Malcolm McNair,
a preacher down in Richmond Co. Edward's brother Niell had at least four children, and the birth years of the two sons,
Niell Jr. and John, are given, 1759 and 1760. Son John, Alex McCollum says, also wound up in Simpson Co., and if he
came over as a child he would presumably have come over with his father Niell Sr. and brother Niell Jr. That in a
stroke would explain the presence of three Niell McNairs in Richmond Co. in the 1790 Census.

Most of this information, my cousin Alex McCollum says, comes from some Miss. books, the rest of the from one of the
McNairs living there. On cross examination, I find in the excerpt from the James Birtley McNair book I got from
Ruth Gladys that Alexander did in fact have a daughter named Catherine (Katie in the book) who married someone named
Leonard, no first name, in Miss.

I see in the 1790 Census that there were Edward McNairs in Richmond Co., and also I see in Thornton Mitchell that
there are wills there for three Edward McNairs, 1789, 1812, and 1825. Two of the wills are reproduced in Myrtle Bridges'
Final Words and neither mentions a son Alexander.

1810 census household in Richmond Co. consecutively with Neill McN. Esq. assumed to be this Alexander, In that household
are two males b. 1800-10, one b. 1794-1800, one male b. 1765-84, four females 1800-10, one female b. 1794-1800, one
female b. 1765-84.

Alexander McNair, Simpson Co. MS, from Holly Calvert: "&#Eacute;children of Alexander McNair&#Eacute;Jane McNair b. about 1818 in
North Carolina and died between 1860-66. She married Needham Wesley Lee of Simpson Co. Mississippi and they had the
following children: Hugh Franklin Lee b. 1843 in Simpson Co., Needham Jefferson Lee b. 1845 in Simpson Co.,
John Calvin Lee b. between 1846-47, James Archibald Lee b. 1851, Henry Clay Lee b. 1855, Margaret Elizabeth Lee Thames b. 1848."

Children of ALEXANDER MCNAIR and EFFIE LITTLE are:
	i.	CATHERINE (KATIE)4 MCNAIR, d. 1863, ,,Covington Co., Ms; m. HENRY LEONARD.

5. SARAH4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) died Aft. April 05, 1883. She married WILLIAM GIBSON.

Notes for SARAH MCNAIR:
Sarah L. Gibson wrote her will in Richmond Co., 5 Apr. 1883, reproduced in Bridges, Final Words... . She mentions
sons William Z. Gibson, Thomas G. Gibson, step daughter Elizabeth Adams, daughters Mollie L. Gibson and
Sallie C. Gibson, the latter of whom got the bulk of the estate; also mentions stepson Nathaniel N. Gibson,
who was appointed executor. Bridges notes that at time of writing, all legetees (William Z., Thomas G., Mollie L.,
and presumably Sallie C.) were minors.

William Gibson wrote his will June 14, 1882, proved 1882, also reproduced in Bridges, Final Words... In this, he
mentions wife Sarah, who I assume to be the daughter of Neill. The same children listed in this will as Sarah's
above.  Gibson also mentions 540 acres, the fact that sons William Z. and Thomas C. are his two youngest sons;
that Mary L. and Sallie C. are his two youngest daughters; and that two two daughters are less than 21 yrs. old,
at time of writing.

Children of SARAH MCNAIR and WILLIAM GIBSON are:
	i.	WILLIAM Z5 GIBSON.
	ii.	THOMAS G GIBSON.
	iii.	MARY L GIBSON.
	iv.	SALLIE C GIBSON.

6. ANN ELIZA4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) died Bef. July 1853. She married WARNER CHANCE.

Notes for ANN ELIZA MCNAIR:
Ann Eliza had died by the time of Neill's 1856 will.

Notes for WARNER CHANCE:
Warner Chance died intestate in May 1853 and there was an estate record, reproduced in Bridges, Our Native Heath....
All kids names are taken from this source, unless otherwise noted. Ann Eliza not mentioned so apparently has died
by then. The entry mentions Chance's 460 acre property on Hitchcock and Spring Fork Creeks, Richmond Co., adjoining
lands of Frank Surgenor and John Dawkins. All children and grandchildren listed here, except children John, Sarah,
Agnes, and Cornelius, are from that record. Those four came from Birtley McNair, I guess.

Children of ANN MCNAIR and WARNER CHANCE are:
13.	i.	SARAH MARGARET5 CHANCE, d. Bef. 1853.
	ii.	JOHN CHANCE.

Notes for JOHN CHANCE:
Lived in Richmond Co. as of the 1882 estate record of Catherine McNair, which is reproduced in one of Myrtle Bridges
books, Estate Records 1772-1933...

	iii.	CORNELEUS CHANCE.
iv.	AGNES JANE CHANCE, m. WILLIAM SNEAD.

Notes for AGNES JANE CHANCE:
Agnes Myers, Richmond Co., is listed among children of Ann Chance in the next-of-kin list in Catherine McNair's 1882
Richmond Co. estate record by executor Neill McNair Smith. See Catherine McNair, Neill's presumed sister, for more
on this record.

	v.	SAMUEL CHANCE.
vi.	ELIJAH CHANCE, d. Abt. 1885.

Notes for ELIJAH CHANCE:
Elijah's 1885 will reproduced in Bridges, Final Words... Mentions wife Harriet and that there are children, whose
names are not given.

	viii.	BENJAMIN CHANCE.
	ix.	RICHARD CHANCE.
	x.	WARNER JR. CHANCE.

Notes for WARNER JR. CHANCE:

15.	xv.	DORRY CHANCE, d. Bef. 1853.

7. CATHERINE4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) died Bef. November 30, 1882. She married GILBERT MCNEILL March 24, 1846.

Notes for CATHERINE MCNAIR:
Myrtle N. Bridges, Estate Records 1772-1933 Richmond Co. NC Hardy--Meekins, Book II, (Genealogy Publishing Service,
573 Beasley Mine Rd., Franklin NC 28734-4144), p. 145: March 24, 1846 Issue Fayetteville Observer: "Married in Richmond
County on the 8th, Gilbert McNeill to Miss Catharine McNair, youngest daughter of Neill McNair, all of said County.
 M&D Abstracts - 1841-1850 - Tyner."

Catherine and Gilbert McNeill are listed among heirs in Catherine McNair's 1882 Richmond Co. estate record by executor
Neill McNair Smith. This list included all living children of Neill and his brother Alexander McNair.

Notes for GILBERT MCNEILL:
Census data: 1850 Richmond Co., Williamson TWP, only child Margaret, age two. Family not apparently in Richmond Co.
after that census.

Child of CATHERINE MCNAIR and GILBERT MCNEILL is:
	i.	MARGARET5 MCNEILL, b. 1848.

8. MATTHEW WATSON4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) was born 1805, and died 1873 in ,,Richmond, Nc, US. He married
MARTHA ANN ADAMS. She was born in ,,Marlboro, Sc, and died 1881. (Matthew W. McNair, Esq. has been appointed Postmaster
at Laurel Hill, in place of Duncan McLaurin, Esq., resigned, and the office has been removed to Mr. McNair's residence, 5
miles South of Laurel Hill. FayOb. Aug. 2, 1843) June 13, 2016 by Bridges

Notes for MATTHEW WATSON MCNAIR:
Info about birthdate, death, children's names, etc., from James Birtley McNair.

Buried in a cemetery described as "An Old McNair Cemetary," surveyed and contributed by Catherine McNeill: "As you
go from Laurinburg to Aberdeen, it is on the left off the Highway about a half mile (guess) in an area that used to
be called Elmore. It used to be in an Oak grove. This was evidently a larger cemetery than the listings would indicate,
as many sunken places, indicating old graves, could be found. This is now Scotland, but was Richmond when these people
lived and died": Father's Grave Mathew W. McNair [the W. is for Watson] died Dec. 12, 1873 age 68 yrs.; Mother's Grave
Martha Ann, wife of M.W. McNair died April 13,1881, aged 65 yrs.; Brother's Grave Wm. J. McNair son of M.W. and M.A. McNair
died Jan.9, 1857 aged 17 yrs, 11 mos, 11 da.

Listed among PARENTS & CHILDREN IN ROCKDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN 1845 (Myrtle Bridges, Richmond Co. Genweb site):
Matthew W. McNair (father),Neill, Julia Margaret and William.

Birthdates for some of MW's kids from "Memories and Documents About Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church and Her
People," a booklet I got somewhere. At the same time, Martha Jane McNair was baptized, no birthdate given.

The 1882 Richmond Co. estate record of Catherine McNair, presumably the sister of Alexander and Neill McNair,
lists heirs. The list is reproduced in Myrtle Bridges Estate Records 1772-1933..., includes Mary J. Peele, T.S. McNair,

Edward McNair, all of Richmond Co., among children of Matthew W. McN.

9. JANE4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) was born February 26, 1805, and died February 26, 1875. She married
ARCHIBALD MCNAIR 1827. He died Bef. 1850.

Notes for JANE MCNAIR:
Jane's 1875 will reported in M. N. Bridges, Final Words... Jane mentions Hariet A. M. Gibson and Miriam A. Gibson,
and sons in law Shockley L. Gibson and Nathan T. Gibson (but fails to mention which is married to which). She also
mentions Archibald P. Gibson (see below). Will also mentions 350 acres on the east side of Gum Swamp (went to Harriet)
and more land on the west side of Gum Swamp, which went to Miriam. Jane specified that upon Miriam's death, the parcel
of land that she got was to be divided equally amongst her (Miriam's) daughters, except for the mansion house and
outbuildings, which were to go to Archibald P. Gibson, presumably one of Miriam's sons. Sons in law Shockley L. Gibson
and Nathan T. Gibson were executors. Will dated Dec. 19 1871.

Jane's birthyear from 1850 census.

Tombstone inscriptions from from the Shockley L. Gibson Cemetery, established ca. 1864, contributed by Alan Stubbs
to the Richmond Co. NC Genweb site. Described as: located near the intersection of the Old Stage Road and Hwy. 79 at
Springfield, NC in a small block fence: Jane McNair wife of Archibald McNair, mother of Miriam A. McNair Gibson and

infant son of S.L. & M.A. Gibson, b. May 17, 1874 d. Sept. 19, 1874; E.J. Gibson Dau. of S.L. & M.A. Gibson B. Feb. 14,
1863 D. May 14, 1864; Archie P. Gibson son of Shockley & Miriam Gibson B. July 5, 1859 D. June 13, 1888; others.

Notes for ARCHIBALD MCNAIR:
Archibald was known as Capt. Archibald, of Fayetteville when he married Jane in June 1827. Married by Duncan Mcintyre
in Richmond Co. Archibald's previous wife Jenet, native of Greenock, Scotyland, had died in Fayetteville in Oct. 1826
at the age of 45. Also notable that Arch. McNair was the censustaker who listed the entire Norton clan "free-colored"
in the 1840 census.

Apparently dead by 1850, as Jane and daughters Harriet and Miriam were living in father Neill's household then.

Marriage Notes for JANE MCNAIR and ARCHIBALD MCNAIR:
Marriage performed by Duncan McIntyre. Captain Arch. McNair's previous wife Janet, native of Greenock, Scotland, had
died in Fayetteville NC in 1826, age 45.

Children of JANE MCNAIR and ARCHIBALD MCNAIR are:
19.	i.	HARRIET A.5 MCNAIR, b. 1833; d. April 08, 1899.
20.	ii.	MIRIAM A. MCNAIR, b. August 15, 1835; d. August 02, 1874.

10. JOHN CALVIN4 MCNAIR (NEILL3, FNU2, FNU1) was born 1818, and died January 08, 1884. He married (1) CHRISTIAN NORTON
Bef. 1849. She was born Abt. 1825. He married (2) ELIZA ANN NORTON 1857. She was born 1840. He married (3) MAHALA NORTON
Bef. 1871. She was born 1853, and died December 27, 1927 in Conway, Horry, Sc.

Notes for JOHN CALVIN MCNAIR:
Birthyear from the 1850 census
(...although presumed youngest daughter Emma b. 1886.)
Census data: 1850, 1860 Richmond Co., SC. In 1850, 32 yrs. old living with his 77 year-old father Neill, sister Jane (50),
Jane's daughters Harriet (17) and Miriam (15), and Archibald Patterson (physician, either 32 or 52), presumed a relative
of John C.'s mother, Margaret Patterson.

In 1860, John C. (36) was in the household of Christian Norton (30) and her two children Margaret (11) and Mariam (10).
The implication of the entry is that the kids (last names not given) are named Norton, not McNair, as Christian Norton
appears to be head of household. It might be significant though that McNair's mother and youngest sister had the same
names as these kids. In the 1850 census, on the same page as the Neill McNair household in which John Calvin lives, is
the household of Betsy Smith (47), her daughter presumably Jane (22), with Christian Norton (22) and Margaret (2) and Mirriam (1).

In 1870, John McNair is 51, a carpenter and appears on the page following that showing Sallie Norton's household, living
with one Harriet Gin, a 14-year-old farmhand from the look of the entry. With McNair are Margaret (20, W) and Mary (18, W),
whose names and ages appear to be consistent with the two kids John C. McNair and Christian Norton are living with in 1860.

In the last Census in which McNair would have been alive, 1880, McNair and Mahala are in the same household, in Adamsville,
Marlboro Co., S.C., just a few miles across the border from Laurel Hill. Herein John C. McNair is 59 and Mahalah is 26.
Kids are Sarah C. (8); Alice (6); Lillie (my grandmother Frances Ann) (4); Archie (2); and Nora (1). Also in the household
are McNair's mother-in-law Sarah Norton (50); and sisters-in-law Mary (23), Lucy (15), and Jane (12). McNair is listed as
a farmer born in N.C., both parents born in Scotland (his mother, Margaret Patterson, turned out later to have been born in
Richmond Co.); Mahalah through Alice and all the in-laws were born in N.C. (parents born in N.C.); and kids Lillie through
Archie were born in S.C. (so the family must have moved to Marlboro County from Rockingham around 1875).

Marriage Notes for JOHN MCNAIR and CHRISTIAN NORTON:
Reported in the same household with John C. McNair and two children, the oldest b. 1849, in the 1860 census, so assumed
married before 1849. Later learned that older daughter Margaret C. b. 1848.

Notes for ELIZA ANN NORTON:
The only evidence of this marriage is a reference at the Richmond Co. Genweb site of a divorce, John Cale McNair (plaintiff)
from Eliza Ann Norton McNair. Married Apr. 1857, divorced 1860. Could our boy have been married to yet another Norton lady?
I'm assuming that's our John C. and that Eliza is the daughter of Elijah Norton, son of Isham Norton. Mary Norton Doggett
has McNair married to another of Elijah's daughters, Christian, b. aboout 1825, so the woman Christian in David Norton's
household 1850 and 1860 might be this daughter of Elijah.

Notes for MAHALA NORTON:
Mother's impression was that Mahala was known as "Haley Bright" when she was young. There is a note in the margin af
material received from Ruth Gladys McColl that she might have been connected to a man named Roderick Bright in some way.

Mahala married Roby Waters sometime after 1888, and moved to Horry Co. with him, their three kids, and Mahala's son Arch
McNair sometime between 1910 and 1920. Ruth Gladys McCall says that none of the McNair girls made the move, Atlanta and
Emma moving in with my grandparents Frances Ann and Milton T. Ammons back in Marlboro. The attraction in Horry was jobs
with the Tilghman Lumber Co., according to Arch.'s grandson Archie McNair.

Mahala buried in old Salem Church Cemetery near Cool Springs SC.

Buried Pernassus Cemetary, Brownsville, SC (not sure whee I got that; Eugene Polston says Polston Cem., Tatum, SC
Sarah Catherine McNair Polston, 1870, Richmond Co., from Margie Robinson: "...Charles Polston...married to
Jane Driggers.... children: William (b 2/15/1865 d. 2/25/1931) married to Lee McNair; Charlie (b. 10/11/1862
d. 2/25/1916) married to Mary Norton; Elijah (b. 2/23/1860 d.9/26/1921); Phillip (b. 7/2/1868 d. 11/6/1926 married
Jane Norton; Eluid (b. 2/3/1871 d. 1/6/ 1933) Mom says he spoke with a "brogue" and she believed him to be Scots.
married to Sarah Catherine; Jessie ??; Lucy (b. 8/15/1853).

"Eluid had another brother whose name may have been Leo or Leroy, but mother never knew him. At the time that mother
knew them they lived in Marlboro County, S.C. (probably Bennetsville, S.C. which was the county seat), but some may
have lived in the southern part of North Carolina....possibly Lumberton or Laurinbury, NC.

"Eluid and Sarah Catherine had thirteen or so children, but several died: Emanuel ("Uncle Manny") married to Lela
(Graham?) (4 kids: Eugene...he is now deceased, but I met him once in Dallas....Cecil, Harold, Sarah Alice); Claude
Phillip married to Mae Wallace (kids: C.P. ...now deceased, E.L. who died within the last year, I believe); Winifred
(Mom says was a male); Virginia (died in infancy); Dorothy (died in infancy); and Carolyn (whom I knew slightly when
I was a teenager...); John Merritt (Mom's father) was married to Nellie Mae Medlin...kids were Rosa Nell (my mother),
Mary Helen, William Howard, Margaret Inez, John Merritt (died at two years of age), James Marion (died October of last
year), and Edna Lorraine; Victor Blue married Edna (maiden name unknown....no children); Marvin married Ethel Lee
(Lee is middle name...last name unknown) Kids: Ruby, Lis (deceased), Sybil, Grace, Marvin ("Sonny"), Mildred, at
least one more son whose name she cannot recall...; Dewey Lamar married Esther...one son named Richard; Ruth ...
died approximately Sept. of 1954 (We think she stepped on a nail on the boardwalk at VA BEACH while visiting and
died of tetanus. I was pretty young, but remember everyone being very upset.)

"Mom thinks that Sarah, Catherine's grandmother, who would not have been a Polston, was a Cherokee who was called
"Aunt Sal" and lived to be either 107 or 113...mother says she was "tiny, scarey, and looked like a prune!" Mother
says the Polston descendants were often dark haired (but not straight hair) and that some were somewhat dark complected,
but none had high cheekbones or other features that mother considers to be native American. Mother says her Polston
grandfather had blue eyes.

"Jesse may have been his brother, but I think that Reese and Jesse were Daddy's age (Daddy would be John Merritt Polston).
I did not know them and Jesse may have been named for his father. Jane Norton McNair married Phillip Polston....We never
lived near any of them, but Great uncle Phillip died when I was very small and Aunt Jane always lived with Uncle Marvin
and Aunt Ethel Lee....lovely little old lady. She never had children. One uncle committed suicide when I was very small
....2nd marriage problems...I must have been 6-8 and only overheard talk."

Buried Pernassus Cem., on Hwy. 38 towards Brownsville, according to Ruth Gladys.

January 30, 1946 in Charlotte Nc. She married MILTON THOMAS AMMONS. He was born October 02, 1875 in Bennettsville,
Marlboro, Sc, and died December 28, 1960 in Charlotte Nc.

Notes for FRANCES (LILLIE) ANN MCNAIR:
Grandmother always went by Frances Ann, or Annie, according to my mother (Ruth, her daughter); the 1880 census lists
her as Lillie.

There is an Ann McNair listed in the membership of the Ellerbe Springs Church in 1892, which I see at the Richmond Co.
Genweb site (it says the reference is from Scattered Seed by Myrtle Bridges). Ann would have been around 16 if this is
my grandmother Frances Ann. Not sure what denomination that was but the Richmond Co. site mentions that it grew out of
the Orange Presbytery in 1800, most if not all members Scottish. She is listed along with Alexander Quick and Nannie
Quick (now Wallace, it says), and says elsewhere that Alexander Quick was a deacon in that church. He might have been
the brother Alexander of Polly Quick, whose son, my grandfather Milton Thomas Ammons, married Frances Ann McNair around
1896. In fact, it was Alexander (or Alec) Quick that Milton Thomas Ammons was adopted by when MT's mother Polly Quick
died in 1881. This church, therefore, might be the connection between my grandparents Frances Ann McNair and M.T. Ammons.

From obit presumably in the Charlotte Observer: "Mrs Frances Ann Ammons, 70, for many years prominent in local church
and Sunday school work, died yesterday at a local hospital after an illness of several weeks....Mrs. Ammons was for many
years a leader in the Sunday school and activities of the Wesley Heights church, where she organized the "Frances Ann"
Sunday school cless, named in her honor....During recent years, Mrs. Ammons was active in the Women's Auxiliary of the
Bible Presbyterian church and was a member of the Peterson Bible class of the Dilworth Methodist church...survived by
her husband, M. T. Ammons, 1709 Kenilworth Ave.; six daughters, Mrs. Marie Williams of Washington, D.C., Mrs Paul Bridges
of Columbia S.C., Mrs. Gordon Gullickson of Fairfax, Va., Mrs. Lacy Lane of Marion, S.C., Mrs. K. M. Norris and
Mrs. F. H. Trull of Charlotte; three sons, E. M. Ammons and J. F. Ammons of Charlotte, and Thomas M. Ammons of Richmond..."

Kids are from three different sources: Ruth Gladys McColl, whom my mother and I talked about this about 1995, from
memory; the 1910 Census; and the LDS. The death dates come from the latter. I think the fact that several are shown
dying in 1977 means that the record was submitted then.

The Census shows kids Claudia (1906), Byron (1910) who don't seem to appear again. Might check later censuses.
