The semi-weekly messenger. [volume] (Wilmington, N.C.), 02 July 1897 Mrs. Payne, wife of Hon. J.F. Payne, living a mile or two south of Maxton, met with a serious accident today. She went to ring the farm bell to call the hands from the field at noon. The bell lost its fastening and fell upon her head, inflicting, it is feared, fatal injuries.
