This data shared by Amy Caddell Sadler Seitz    Posted December 13, 2003 by Myrtle Bridges

On his documents, Joshua Hunter Caddell is called Julius. I have not figured that out yet, unless Joshua was a nickname. I have a copy of a post-Civil War photograph of his grandfather William Iverson Caddell who is also buried in Richmond Co. Louise Dawkins who lives in Ellerbe is his gr. granddaughter. She is in her 80's now. Amy.

Generation No. 1
William Iverson Caddell born February 28, 1844 in Anson County, died July 2, 1929 in Mecklenburg County, buried in the Zion Methodist Cemetery in Richmond County. William was a Veteran of the Civil War C.S.A. (severely wounded at Gettysburg) and a 2nd cousin to Artemus and Cornelius Caddell. In this post-war photograph, notice that he is wearing his Southern Cross Medal on his lapel.

This is the story told by Frances Clementine Caddell Tanner, daughter of Robert Admiral Caddell and granddaughter of William Iverson Caddell: "William Iverson Caddell and brother George were both wounded in the Civil War. W. I. was wounded eleven times at the Battle of Gettysburg and was carried off the battlefield for dead. However, he survived and was wounded again in the Battle at Charles Town, W. Va. He was hospitalized and confined in Maryland until the end of the war. Then he was released and put into a Union uniform. Once he got past the Mason-Dixon Line, nobody would give him food and he almost starved to death before he got home. The side of his face was shot away and he wore a full beard to cover it. It never completely healed. The state of N.C. passed a law exempting him from paying a peddler's tax. He spent his later days in Charlotte, N.C. with daughter Salome. George K. Caddell had been confined at Point Lookout, Maryland one and one-half months before W. I. was confined there. George's left leg was amputated. According to Frances's son Ben, George moved to Sumter, S.C."
To the Hon. Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the City of Charlotte, N. C. : I, W. I. Caddell, hereby respectfully make application to your honorable Board for permission to carry on the business of a peddler within the incorporated limits of the City of Charlotte, N. C. for the period of one year from July 1st. 1910, and I further- more respectfully petition your Honorable Board to permit me to carry on the business of peddler without requiring me to pay the usual license fee collected in such cases. I respectfully submit that I am an Ex-Confederate soldier, Regiment 43 N. C. Company K, and that I am incapacitated by reason of wounds received in the war and by disease and age and am not able to earn a living by manual labor, and that I own no taxable property whatever. (See Public Laws of N. C. 1903 Chapter 530.) I respectfully submit that I am a citizen of the City of Charlotte, and that my present license expires June 30th. 1910. I have the honor to remain, Yours respectfully, W I . Caddell (beautiful signature) ___________________________________ 1107 S. Graham St. Ext. Charlotte, N.C.

On May 5, at Wil- liamsburg, some fifteen miles west of Yorktown, the Confederates made a stand, but were pushed back toward the Chickahominy River. McClellan followed, and on May 31 was at Fair Oaks (or Seven Pines) about ten miles east of Richmond. Here an inconclusive two days' battle was fought in which the Confederate general, Joseph E. Johnston, was severely wounded. Robert E. Lee was put in command by Jefferson Davis. Source: Harper's Weekly, Aug. 16, 1862
