Surry County, North Carolina,
was named for
County Surrey in England, the birthplace of colonial Governor
William Tryon, who built
Tryon Palace in New Bern, North
Carolina, on the coast.
Surry County was created in 1770 and began
administrative jurisdiction over its territory in 1771. It
was created out of a northwestern corner of Old Rowan County,
which covered the whole northwest quadrant of the state at one
time. Surry later gave birth to Stokes County in 1789,
which in turn gave birth to Forsyth County in 1849. Surry
also gave up land to Wilkes County in 1777, and to Yadkin County
in 1850.
