WPA Cemeteries - Wilkes County, Part 1 of 3

These cemeteries were surveyed in the 1930's & 1940's as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) for the State of North Carolina. Following listings are included on the NC Digital Collection of the State Archives website. Please keep in mind that while directions are included in these original listings, many of the landmarks, highways & roads may have changed over the years, and indeed, some of the cemeteries and/or names, may not even exist any longer. While the original listings contain a number of misspellings and typographical errors and with the surnames first, I have left them as is, with the exception that I have transcribed them with surnames last. Some of the more obvious mistakes in dates are indicated by me with an asterisk (*) beside it.
 

Presbyterian Cemetery

Location: Back of the Presbyterian Church in Wilkesboro, NC in the center of town.   Approximate 175 marked graves, and 50 unmarked graves; earliest grave is 1811.  Condition: Very very bad. The weeds were so high that  I had to cut them down before I could read some of the markers. Some of the markers have fallen down.

Some people say that it belongs to the town of Wilkesboro, and some say that it belongs to the State.  It is one of the old Cemeteries in this County. People from all over the State come there to see it, and someone thought that there were some unknown Soldiers buried there, but then others say that they were not.

Dear Mr. Rushton:
 

The Presbyterian cemetery in Wilkesboro, NC is sure in a bad condition. I had to cut some weeds so that I could get to some of the markers, as the weeds were so high, and some of the markers have fallen down.  Some of the markers are so old that I could not read them, as this is one of th old cemeteries in this county, and it seems that they have not taken care of it. Some of the plots have been taken care of but most of them have not.  Mrs. J. M. Bumgarner said that she had tried to get some of the people  that had markers there to just pay a small amt., and she would have it fixed but it seems that they won't do that.  Mrs. Bumgarner ask help from some of the people, and they told her to have it fixed and they would pay, and never paid her. She hopes that she can get some help to fix it as people from other towns to come there to see it.  I am sending you a list of soldiers that are buried there and each name will be the condition of their grave.

Col. Wm. WAUGH   Died Aug. 14, 1852.  He was 77 years old. He was a native of Adamas County, but migrated to Wilkesboro, NC in December 1805. A Public spirited and valued citizen. A kind and generous friend during his long residence in NC.  A most active enterprising and sucessful merchant.
