Garry Gaston Burnett

HIGH POINT Mr. Garry Gaston Burnett, 57, a resident of 1803 Stoneybrook Drive, died suddenly on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Memorial services for Garry Burnett will commence on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Providence Place, 1785 Westchester Drive, High Point. The body will lie in state from 6 to 8 p.m. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. The funeral rites continue on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, beginning at 11 a.m., at Providence Place by the Rev. Dr. Vance Hunt. Thereafter, Mr. Burnett's body will lie in state from 3 to 4 p.m. at Burnett's Chapel United Church of Christ, Major Hill Road, Graham. The final homegoing celebration will take place at 4 p.m. at Burnett's Chapel, with the burial immediately following in the church cemetery.

He was born on April 23, 1947, in Graham, N.C., the seventh of nine children to Zachariah Braxton Burnett and Lena Alston Burnett, both of Graham. His parents preceded him in death.

As a youngster, Garry attended primary schools as well as Central High School in Alamance County, N.C. Garry was a scholar throughout his school days and graduated with honors in 1965. In addition, he was selected an outstanding student by his peers. While in high school, he was an active member of numerous clubs. He also played basketball, football, and baseball while attending Central High School.

After graduating from high school, Garry attended Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1970. At Winston-Salem State University he played football and was an active member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. Garry's involvement in various activities spoke not only to his commitment to school spirit but, also to the breadth and depth of his passion for his community and classmates. Garry was known by his college classmates as a serious, but fun-loving student.

After college, Garry began his civil service career with the city of Burlington, where he worked for three years. In 1973, Garry began a decorated 31-year career with the city of High Point. He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Parks and Recreation, a position to which he was appointed by the City Manager in 1998; the same year he won the "High Pointer of the Year" award.

His many contributions to volunteer and civic service organizations throughout the local and state communities truly captured his commitment to education, youth, and family. In particular, he exemplified his commitment to family through his passion for collecting family photos, records, and other memorabilia. Although his involvement and participation in community organizations are too many to list, those around him thought of Garry as one of High Point's greatest ambassadors. Garry was elected in 2000 as a representative of District 1 on the Guilford County Board of Education.

While Garry's professional career was quite impressive, what was most amazing about his life was the personal influence he had on those around him. In 1967, Garry married Carolyn Thomas. To this union two sons were born. During their marriage Garry established a lasting relationship with his mother-in-law, Rev. Bertha M. Thomas. In 1992, Garry married his present wife Caroline Hazel. With Caroline, Garry had two additional sons. Perhaps Garry's most prized possessions are his four sons who he has had an amazing impact on academically, professionally, and socially.

Included amongst Garry's many sorrowing family members and friends are his immediate family: his beloved and devoted wife, Caroline Burnett of the home; four sons, Garry Burnett Jr. and his wife, Meredith, both of Washington, D.C., Todd Burnett of Silver Spring, Md., Cohen Burnett and Zachary Braxton Burnett, both of the home; three brothers, James Burnett (Jean), Samuel Burnett, Arthur Burnett (Debbie), all of Graham; four sisters, Mildred Virginia Foust and Ruth Hadley, both of Graham, Louella Fearrington of Mebane, and Frances Lackey (Harvey) of Greensboro; one aunt, Dorcas Burnett; mother-in-law, Mary M. Hazel, with whom he communicated frequently; two sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law. In addition, to his immediate family, Garry leaves a host of nieces and nephews. He also established many professional and personal friends with whom he had lasting relationships during the span of his career.

His brother, Ervin Burnett, preceded him in death.

Garry accepted Christ as his personal savior at a young age and was baptized at Burnett's Chapel United Church of Christ, in Graham, a family church his grandfather founded and pastored. There he participated in Sunday School and various youth activities. Most recently, Mr. Burnett regularly attended Memorial United Methodist Church in High Point.

Haizlip Funeral Home, 206 Fourth St., High Point, N.C. 27260 is in charge of arrangements.
