Mr. F. T. Andrews
   MEBANE — Mr. F. T. Andrews, 79, of 2375 Jim Minor Road, died at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health, two weeks critical.
   A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mamie Elizabeth Stone Andrews and the son of Mr. James Luther Andrews and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Thompson Andrews, both deceased. He was retired from Western Electric and was a U.S. Army military police veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Millie Andrews Shepherd of Elon College; a son, Mr. William Ray Andrews of Charlotte; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Foster of Charlotte; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
   A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Rainey Qualls.
There will be no visitation.

Mr. H. Ray Armstrong
   MEBANE — Mr. Harley Ray Armstrong, 68, of 3672 Old Hillsborough Road, died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 1999, at his home after three years of failing health, three weeks critical.
   A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Annie Boggs Armstrong, who survives, and the son of Mr. Thomas Martin Armstrong and Mrs. Nancy Dianah Gray Armstrong, both deceased. He was a retired textile worker and a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Swepsonville Baptist Church.
   Survivors other than his wife of the home include one sister, Mrs. Vergie Mae Byrd of Graham; two stepsons, Mr. Jack Webster of Asheboro and Dr. Barry Webster of Bassett, Va.; eight stepgrandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Coy Gray Armstrong.
   The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Don Clements and Chaplain Mike Shannon. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery.
   The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home.

Mrs. L. E. Culberson Atkinson
   BURLINGTON — Mrs. L. E. Culberson Atkinson, 92, of Alamance Health Care Center, died at 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the Center after a long illness. She was a former resident of Haw River.
   A native of Chatham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Atkinson, and the daughter of Mr. Charles Andrew Culberson and Mrs. Annie Core Culberson, both deceased. She was retired from textile manufacturing and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
   Survivors include a son, Mrs. Ralph L. Poe of Mebane; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Vaughn of Elon College, Mrs. Fern Carden of Snow Camp and Mrs. Annie Charles Mincey of Wallace; four brothers, Mr. Charles Culberson of San Jose, Calif., Mr. Otis Culberson of San Francisco, Mr. Raymond Culberson of Alamance and Mr. Henry Culberson of Mebane; three stepchildren, Mrs. Louis (Ardell) Williams of Graham, Mrs. Herman (Ruth) Wood of Rome, Ga. And Mrs. Robert (Billie) Abernathy of Raleigh; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
   She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Anne Thompson; a son, Mr. Thomas Jackson Poe Jr.; a sister, Mrs. Willie Mae Gilbert; and two brothers, Mr. Frank Culberson and Mr. Leon Culberson.
   The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by Dr. Curtis Fussell, pastor of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. The family will be at the funeral home one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery.
   The family will be at the home of a son, Mr. Ralph Poe, 663 Wilkerson Trail in Mebane.

   MEBANE - Mr. Elwin Benjamin Autry, 86, of Village at Brookwood, formerly of Mebane, died February 19, 2005.
   Mr. Autry was a native of Durham County, son of the late William Benjamin and Lillian Clifton Autry, and husband of the late Mary Frances Pickard Autry. He was a retired engineer with Western Electric.
   He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Lynn A. Bryant. He is survived by one sister, Louise A. Rich, of Durham; niece, Carol R. Blackwelder, of Durham; and nephew, Robert Rich, of Durham.
   Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2005, in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Curtis Fussell. Arrangements by - Walker's Funeral Home of Mebane.

   MEBANE - Mrs. Ruby Crowder Ayers, 72, of 1146 Gibson Road died at 7:05 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at Dorthea Dix Hospital in Raleigh after six weeks of failing health, two weeks critical.    A native of Austinville, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. James E. Ayers, and the daughter of Mr. James Matthew Crowder and Mrs. Emer Graham Crowder, both deceased. She was a snack bar manager at Alamance Community College and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church    Survivors include six sisters, Miss Willie Crowder and Mrs. Nancy Ann Whitfield, both of Mebane, Mrs. Mary Murphy and Mrs. Jane Williamson, both of Graham, and Mrs. Jean Wilson of Gibsonville; and a brother, the Rev. Rick Crowder.    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, by Dr. Angus W. McGregor, interim pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.    Benjamin Delano Baker, 62, of 2403 Green Street, died in his home Tuesday evening. Mr. Baker was a native of Danville, VA, the son of the late Henry Wise and Rachel Stanford Baker. He moved to Durham as a young child, where he was a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Baker was a sheet Metal Worker and a member of Sheet Metal Local No.5(Tenn). Mr. Baker served in the US Army during the Korean conflict.
   Surviving are his wife, Ruth Whitfield Baker; two sons, Benjamin D. Baker, Jr. of Durham and Mike Baker of Rougemont; one daughter, Holly B. Nichols of Hurdle Mills; three brothers, Harrell W. Baker of Burlington, Newton D. Baker and Sidney W. Baker, both of Durham; two sisters, Hilda B. Tillman of Durham and Joanne B. Sgrosso of Atlanta; and five grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be at 11 AM today at Hall-Wynne Chapel with the Rev. David Thomas and Rev. Dr. A. B. Plexico officiating. Burial will follow at Hawfields Presbyterian Cemetery in Mebane.

   A native of Alamance County, he was the retired owner and operator of Barton Bedding, was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Mebane Presbyterian Church.
   Surviving are son, James S. Barton of Williamsburg, Va.; sister, Mrs. Annie Ruth Dodson of Mebane; brother, Glenn H. Thompson of Elon College; three grandchildren.

   MEBANE — Mr. Ralph Lydron Biggerstaff, 93, of 2502 S. N.C. 119, died at 4:19 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields.
   A native of Rutherford County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Virginia Venable Biggerstaff and the late Mrs. Carleen Bryan Biggerstaff and the son of Mr. O. B. Biggerstaff and Mrs. Lydia Washburn Biggerstaff, both deceased. He was the retired president of Alamance Builders; a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and a deacon; a member of the American Legion Post 63 (Walter B. Ellis); a veteran of World War II, during which he was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy; and a former chairman of the board of trustees of Glade Valley School. He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, and he received his master’s degree at Harvard Busi-ness School.
   Survivors include four nephews, Mr. Ralph Biggerstaff of Shelby, Mr. Alan Biggerstaff of Osteen, Fla., Mr. Frank L. Biggerstaff of Greensboro and Mr. John Black of Mebane; and two nieces, Mrs. Jane Stockard of Milledgeville, Ga., and Ms. Carolyn Biggerstaff of Greensboro.
   He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ann Black; and two brothers, Mr. Foy E. Biggerstaff and Mr. Frank M. Biggerstaff.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by Dr. Curtis Fussell, pastor, and Dr. A. B. Plexico, pastor emeritus. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

   CHAPEL HILL — Mrs. Louise Evans Bowden, 83, of 413 Bowden Road, died at 4:20 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after several years of failing health and a critical illness of one year.
   A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Clyde H. Bowden, who survives, and the daughter of the late Addison Holden Walker and Donnie Esther Watkins Walker. She was a homemaker and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
   Survivors other than her husband of the home include a granddaughter, Miss Coynne Morrison of California; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Homerzella Gates and Mrs. Elizabeth Carter, both of Graham; three brothers, Mr. Bill Walker and Mr. Ned Walker, both of Hillsborough, and Mr. Allen Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Evans Morrison.

   BURLINGTON — Mrs. Katherine Farrell Capps, 82, a resident at Burlington Manor, died at 6:45 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Burlington Manor after an extended illness and a critical illness of two weeks.
   A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Curtis William Capps, and the daughter of the late Mr. James Will Farrell and Mrs. Manie Pickard Farrell. She was a retired hosiery mill employee and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
   Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Karen Capps of Savannah, Ga., Mrs. Kathy C. Truitt of Graham, and Mrs. Cindy C. (Michael) Warren of Mebane; and four grandchildren, Mrs. Lisa Boulanger of Chicago, Jeffrey Faulk of Greensboro, and Brian Warren and Adam Warren, both of Mebane.
   The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by Dr. Curtis Fussell, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Annie E. Snipes Carr
   HILLSBOROUGH — Mrs. Annie E. Snipes Carr, died at 7:50 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Brookshire Nursing Center in Hillsborough.
   Born May 26, 1916, in Alamance County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. James F. Snipes and Arressa Snipes. She was retired from Alexander Wilson Elementary School with 32 years of service. She was a member of Melfield United Church of Christ where she served as a teacher, and was a member of the choir. She also served on the usher board and was a member of the missionary board.
   Survivors include two sons, Mr. Ashmere Carr of Haw River and Mr. Clarence Carr of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Wilson of Haw River; four grandchildren, the Rev. Darryl Carr, Amy Harris, Debra Curtis and Sheila Bynum; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of relatives and friends.
   She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Elmer Carr and Colen Snipes; two sisters; and five brothers.
   The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Melfield United Church of Christ by Pastor Danny Williams and the Rev. Eddie Weathers, eulogist. The body will lie in state one hour before the service. Burial will be in Hawfields Cemetery.

    BURLINGTON — Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt Carr, 68, of 1215 Moody St., Greensboro, died, Saturday,     Nov. 25, 2000, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.
    A native of Alamance County, he was son of Mr. Lacy Carr and Mrs. Murdle Woods Carr, both deceased. He was a furniture delivery man for Green and McClure Furniture Co. and a member of Melfield United Church of Christ.
    Survivors include two brothers, the Rev. William H. Carr of Greensboro and Mr. Andrew Carr of Chapel Hill.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Woodrow Carr and Mr. Clarence Carr; and two sisters, Ms. Louise Jeffies and Ms. Mary Lacy Carr.
    The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Melfield United Church of Christ, Haw River by the Rev. Danny Williams, pastor. The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Blackwell Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hawfields Cemetery, Mebane.
    The family will be at the church one hour before the funeral and at other times at the home of Mr. Ashmore Carr, 3472 N.C. 119 South, Haw River.

Elizabeth S. Carrington
    BURLINGTON - Mrs. Elizabeth Scott Carrington, age 91, of 139 Piedmont Way, Burlington, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1993, at 7 p.m. at her residence after several years declining health.
    Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by Dr. Charles Williams, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington. Burial will follow in the Hawfields Church Cemetery.
    Mrs. Carrington was born in the Hawfields community of Alamance County, N.C., the daughter of the late Robert Walter Scott and the late Elizabeth Hughes Scott. She was married to the late Dr. George Lunsford Carrington. She was the sister of the late W. Kerr Scott, former governor and U.S. senator, the late Ralph H. Scott, former senator who served in the N.C. State Senate for many years, and aunt of Robert W. Scott, former governor of N.C.
    Mrs. Carrington was a member of the Hawfields Presbyterian Church, former nurse and nurse anesthetist. She was a forceful and effective advocate of a four year bachelor of science in nursing degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Nursing. In recognition of her efforts and contributions, the School of Nursing Building at UNC-Chapel Hill is named the Elizabeth Scott Carrington Hall, and the UNC School of Nursing's periodic publication is entitled The Carrington Quarterly.
    Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Agnes Scott Haseseler of Burlington and many nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
    Memorials may be made to the University of North Carolina School of Nursing, CB 7460, Carrington Hall, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27599-7460, the Hawfields Presbyterian Church or the Hawfields Presbyterian Child Care and Development Center, 2115 S. Mr. Chen-Yueh Cheng
    GRAHAM — Mr. Chen-Yueh Cheng, 89, of 136-B W. Crescent Square Drive, died at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after an illness of several days.
    Born Oct. 15, 1909, in An Hui Province, China, he was the husband of Mrs. Nancy Cheng, who survives. He received a doctorate degree from the University of London. He served for more than 10 years as a cultural attaché at the United States Information Services in Taiwan. After retiring in the 1970s, he taught at various universities in Taiwan for more than 15 years and received numerous honors and awards. He moved to the Los Angeles area in 1990 and to Graham in 1998.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Alexander Cheng of Mebane, and three grandchildren.
    A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mebane by the Rev. Robert J. Goode.
    The family will be at Bartlett Funeral Home in Gibsonville from 9 to 10 Friday morning.

    A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Colon T. Farrell and Mr. Ralph H. Clayton, who survives. She was the daughter of Mr. Thomas Ezzell and Mrs. Eva Noah Ezzell, both deceased. She was a retired employee of Copland Fabrics and was a member of Swepsonville United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Mrs. James (Wanda) Owen of Elon College, Mrs. Richard (Linda) Roberts of Mebane and Mrs. Robert (Vickie) Sykes of Burlington; a son, Mr. Ted W. Farrell of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Susie Thomas of Mebane; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Peggy Hunt of Graham and Mrs. Donna Suitt of Wilson, Va.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Nell Caviness.

    HAW RIVER — Mrs. Annie Gladys Henley Cole, 88, of 203 W. Main St., died at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
    A native of Wake County, she was the wife of the late Mr. J. R. “Jimmy” Cole, who died in 1990, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel Henley and Mrs. Lucy Ray Henley, both deceased. She was retired from Cone Mills after 44 years. She was the oldest living member of First Baptist Church of Haw River, where she was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Freddie Cole) Dixon of Haw River and Mrs. Dolores Cole Smith of Lynchburg, Va.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Haw River by the Rev. Richard Poindexter, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

    GRAHAM — Mrs. Elizabeth Scott Cooper, 98, of Heritage Place in Fayetteville, died at 1:08 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Village Green Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville after several months of failing health. She was a former resident of Cooper Road in Graham.
    Born Jan. 14, 1903, in Decatur, Ga., she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Allen Cooper Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Ralph B. Scott and Mrs. Jennie Mallard Scott, both deceased. She was a retired teacher for the Wake, Harnett and Alamance County school systems, and was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. She was educated in the Raleigh city Schools and received her undergraduate education from Flora McDonald and Elon College. She received her master’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She was a poet and had her work published in the Fayetteville Observer.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Geneva Cooper Williford of Fayetteville and Mrs. Louise Cooper Uzzell of Burgaw; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Samuel A. Cooper Jr.; and a grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Scott, for whom the Agnes Scott College in Decatur was named.
    The funeral will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Graham by the Rev. Norman Whitney. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hawfields.

Mrs. Courtney was born in Alamance Co., NC on October 21, 1903, the daughter of the late Harry Philip and Beulah Burton Hurdle White.

    GRAHAM — Mrs. Barbara Hinshaw Covington, 69, of 1140 Trollingwood Road, Haw River, died at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2001 at her residence after two weeks of critical illness.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jim Covington, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Warwick Hinshaw and the late David Edwin Hinshaw. Along with her husband, she was the owner of Jim’s Hotdogs, formerly Jim’s Tastee Freez, for 42 years. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Alamance County Rescue Ladies Auxiliary, Burlington Shrinettes and attended Imperial Shrine of North America for 17 years.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home and her mother of Haw River, include two sons, Mr. Jimmy Covington of Mebane and Mr. David Covington of Haw River; and two grandchildren, Kristen Covington Bowden of Graham and Adam Covington of Haw River.
    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Curtis Fussell and Dr. A. B. Plexico. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    MEBANE — Mrs. Betty Simmons Culberson, of 2508 South Jim Minor Road, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after several years of failing health and a critical illness of one week.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Henry Coore Culberson, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Otis Elisha Simmons and Mrs. Bessie Tate Simmons, both deceased. She was a retired vice president of Wachovia Bank of North Carolina, where she had previously served as retain banking manager for Alamance County, business banking manager and private banking manager for Alamance County. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where she formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Hawfields Presbyterian Child Care Board. At the time of her death, she was treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Alamance County Silent Witness Program (Crime Stoppers) and a member of the Board of Directors of the Alamance County Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority. She was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Alamance County Extension Service Agency and the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the Agri-Business Committee for many years.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Kimberly McVey of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Frances Simmons of Burlington, Mrs. Catherine Simon of Wilmington and Mrs. Shirley Toadvine of Florence, Ky.; three brothers, Mr. Otis E.     JAMESTOWN - Mrs. Hazel G. Freshwater, 87, of 1628 Guilford Road died Saturday at her home.
    Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mebane where she was a member.
    She was a native of Guilford County.
    Surviving are sisters, Miss Bada Gardner of the home, Mrs. Adna Ratcliffe of the home, Mrs. Lucy Bryant of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Gertrude Jones of Greensboro; brothers, Paul Gardner, Jack Gardner, both of Jamestown.
    The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. today.

    BURLINGTON — Billie Van Smith Garner, 63, of 507 Everette St., Apt. 314-B, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday, October 25, 2002, at the Hospice Home after six months of declining health, 12 weeks critical.
A native of Alamance County she was the daughter of J. Van Smith and Lula Mae Albright Smith, both deceased. She attended Open Bible Baptist Church.
    Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Dawn Foust of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Lynn Smith Cannon of Archdale; a granddaughter, Miss Crystal Dawn Overman of High Point; two grandsons, Dustyn Treay Foust and Corey Alexander Foust, both of Graham; a great-grandson, Devin Cole Stewart of High Point; and a dear friend, Buddy Joe Majors of Burlington.
    She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Robert Lee Corbett and Angel Marie Corbett; and a sister, Lessie Ann Smith.
    A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. James McKinney.
    The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Graham tonight from 7 to 9.

Mr. Robert W. Gibson
    MEBANE — Mr. Robert W. Gibson, of 2039 Royce Drive, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, after a two-year illness.
    He was the son of Mrs. Lula G. Rowland, who survives, and the late Mr. Robert W. Gibson Sr. He attended Alexander Wilson High School, King College in Bristol, Tenn., and Georgia State University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for the N.C. Department of Human Resources in Vocational Rehabilitation before retiring. He was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder, member of the cemetery committee and Bible study Sunday school class. He served on the Hawfields Historical Preservation Committee, National Trust for Historic Preservation, State Employees Association of N.C., National Vocational Rehabilitation Association and N.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Association. He was president of the Piedmont Camelia Club.
    Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Lula G. Rowland of the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields; three sisters, Mrs. C.R. (Nannie G.) Overman of High Point, Mrs. Jack (Manie) Richardson of Salisbury and Mrs. Bill (Linda) Douglas of Mebane; two stepsisters, Mrs. Duane (Peggy) Walters of Mebane and Mrs. Selden (Joann) Jordan of Burlington; and one stepbrother, Mr. George Thomas “Tommy” Rowland of Mebane.
    He was preceded in death by a stepfather, Mr. George Rowland, and a stepsister, Mrs. Lonnie (Jean) Robertson.
    The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Curtis Fussell, pastor, and the Rev. Carole Fisher, associate pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    GRAHAM — Mrs. Ruby Mae Walters Gumm, 79, of 706 Brookgreen Terrace, died at 3:37 a.m. Monday, April 12, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, one week critical.
    A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Roy Morgan Gumm and the daughter of Mr. U. T. Walters and Mrs. Frances Dean Walters, both deceased. She was retired from Collins and Aikman. She was active in the TOPS and KOPS organizations and in the Hawfields Senior Citizens Group. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
    Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Raleigh (Rae Vone Gumm) Campbell of Roanoke, Va.; four sons, Mr. Harold D. Gumm of Haw River, Mr. William E. “Bill” Gumm and Mr. Tommy Gumm, both of Graham, and Mr. Donald F. Gum of Whitsett; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Agnes Scott Haeseler
    BURLINGTON — Mrs. Agnes Scott Haeseler, 95, of Twin Lakes, died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 at her residence.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Robert Walter Scott and Elizabeth Hughes Scott, both deceased. She was the last surviving child of 14 children. Mrs. Scott attended Flora McDonald College, The Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania School of Public Health. She was a registered nurse and worked in the Newark, N.J. school system for over 30 years and worked as supervisor of nursing at the Staten Island Children’s Hospital. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church and the driving force behind the Hawfields Child Care and Developmental Center.
    There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Curtis Fussell.

    HAW RIVER — Mrs. Dilcie Marie Hester, of 2432 Freshwater Road, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
    A native of Nash County, she was the wife of William Hester, who survives, and the daughter of Brodie Farrington and Roxie Wilkins, both deceased. She was a member of Melfield United Church of Christ.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Brodie Farrington Jr. of the home; two daughters, Brenda Senter and Audrey Parker, both of Haw River; five sisters, Willie O. Mr. Walter Michael Hurteau
    MEBANE — Mr. Walter Michael Hurteau, 81, of 2331 Farrell Road, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence after 1 ½ years of declining health and six weeks critical.
    A native of Philadelphia, Pa., he was the husband of Mrs. Hazel Farrell Hurteau, who survives, and the son of the late Alfred J. Hurteau and Katherine McLean Hurteau. He was a retired mechanic for the city of Burlington and attended Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
    He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and received a Bronze Star GO#130 HQ 1st U.S. Inf. Div.44, a Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal GO #9 HQ 7th FA BN 45, American Defense Service medal WWII, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign with Bronze Service Arrowhead and 8 Stars, and WWII Victory medal. He was involved in battles and campaigns in Ardennes Rhineland, Algeria French Morocco, Central Europe, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, and Northern France and D-Day in Normandy, Sicily, and North Africa.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Fred Hurteau and Mr. Richard Hurteau, both of Mebane, and Mr. Gary Hurteau of Graham; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a son, Philip Kenneth Hurteau.
    The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Curtis Fussell, pastor, and the Rev. Jay Kennett, Hospice chaplain. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

    MEBANE — Ms. Betty Lou Hutson, 68, of 1662 Turner Road, died at 8 a.m., Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her home after an illness of nine years.
    A native of Pelly, Texas, she was the daughter of Mr. Randle Hutson and Mrs. Christine Hutson, both deceased. She was retired from General Electric Corp. of Mebane, where she was one of the 12 original employees of the Mebane branch. She was a member of Mebane Presbyterian Church. She attended schools in Bayton, Texas, and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. She moved to Mebane in 1956.
    Survivors include a brother, Mr. Randle (Gayle) Hutson of Onalaska, Texas and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy (Arthur) Cates of Deer Park, Texas.
    She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Norma Fojt.

He was an electrical design engineer for AT&T in Burlington. Mr. Jenness was Presbyterian, was a veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Pioneer Club of America.

    MEBANE — Mr. Chris Lloyd Kametches, 64, of 7317 Hebron Church Road, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center after an illness of five months.
    Born Oct. 9, 1935, in Wake County, he was the husband of Mrs. Nancy Webster Kametches, who survives, and the son of Mr. Chris Kametches and Mrs. Omega Lloyd Kametches, both deceased. He was a retired senior executive vice president of Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. He was a member of the Wolf Pak Club and an advisor to the College of Textiles. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.

    SPRINGHILL, Kan. — Mrs. Esther Janice Sumner Koutoulas, 80, of 20705 W. 151st died at 2:45 a.m. Sunday, May 9, 1999, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
    Born Sept. 4, 1918, in Chatham County, she was the daughter of Mr. Turner Sumner and Mrs. Lula Sumner, both deceased. She had lived in Greensboro most of her life and was educated in the Chatham County school system. She worked for P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. for many years.
    Survivors include three sons, Mr. Michael Kontoulas of Springhill, Mr. Konnie Kontoulas of Orange Beach, Ala., and Mr. Greg Kontoulas of Mebane; and seven grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by an infant son, Christopher Kontoulas; two sisters, Ms. Etta Sumner Ingle and Ms. Ada Freeman; a brother, Mr. Irvin Glenn Sumner; and two grandchildren.
    A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery in Mebane by the Rev. Odell Link.

    HAW RIVER — Mr. George Ross Lemon, 60, of 1915 Laurie Drive, died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at his residence.
    A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he was the husband of Mrs. Regena Cupp Lemon, who survives, and the son of William Norwood Lemon Sr. and Annabell Greiner Lemon, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the USS Enterprise and Independence as a Petty Officer Second Class and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.
    He was a former employee of General Electric with 19 years of service and was an employee of SCI Systems Inc. He was an award winning photographer and was the founder of Alamance Image Makers. He was also a member and drummer for the Alamance Jazz Band.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Michael Ross Lemon of Morrisville and David Lemon and his wife, Tammy, of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Sallie Powers of Salem, Va.; and a brother, William N. Lemon Jr. of Salem.

Mr. Alfred Lowdermilk Jr.
    AKRON, Ohio — Mr. Alfred J. “Jake” Lowdermilk Jr., 82, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in Akron.
    A native of Mount Gilead, N.C., he was the husband for 56 years of Mrs. Mary Kerr Scott Lowdermilk, who survives, and the son of Mr. Alfred J. Lowdermilk Sr. and Mrs. Bessie Ingram Lowdermilk, both deceased. He graduated from Mount Gilead High School and attended Duke University. He transferred to N.C. State University in 1935 and graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1938. He was employed by Southern Foods Inc. in Burlington, first as a chemist and later as plant manager. He was employed by E.I. DuPont Co. in Wilmington, Del., as a chemist and line foreman in the manufacture of explosives. He then worked for 43 years at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron as a development engineer, project engineer and section head of the laboratories in the general products division. He received two patent awards at Goodyear and retired in 1986. He also taught chemistry at the University of Akron for six years, and for the past 12 years had done volunteer tax counseling for the elderly, sponsored by the AARP and IRS. He had been an active member of First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, serving in many leadership roles. He was a member of Cuyahoga Falls Lodge No. 735, A. F.&A.M., and served as master in 1959. He was also a member of the Tadmore Shrine.
    Survivors other than his wife include a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth White Westman of Auburn Hills, Mich.; a brother, Mr. Robert S. Lowdermilk; three sisters, Ms. Elizabeth L. Johnson, Ms. Jennie L. Moss and Ms. Louise L. Kirk, all of Mount Gilead; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

He was an elder of Hawfields Presbyterian Church and a member of the Board of Directors of Hawfields Child Care Center. He was a member of Bingham Lodge 272 AF&AM. He retired in 1970 as chief master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force with 24 years active service.

He was also a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a master’s degree in agriculture economics. He was a member of Graham Bible Fellowship where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Richard Monroe Minor
    MEBANE — Mr. Richard Monroe Minor, 71, of 2031 Farrell Road, died at 5:12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three months of illness.
    A native of Vance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Josephine Barker Minor, who survives, and the son of the late Vernon Greene Minor and Sallie Currin Minor. He was retired from AT&T and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. Mr. Minor was known for his woodworking skills, and also being an electronics technician. He was a professional TV repairman, and enjoyed the outdoors.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include three daughters, Mrs. Brenda Milton of Haw River, and Mrs. Susan Rooker and Mrs. Tonya McClain, both of Mebane; a son, Mr. Vernon Minor of Fredericksburg, Va.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Edith Smith of Chester, Va.; and a brother, Mr. William Minor of Hillsborough.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ada Newton.
    The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by Dr. Curtis Fussell, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Dorothy Slater Neese
    MEBANE — Mrs. Dorothy Slater Neese, 87, of 6915 West Ten Road, died at 3 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, in Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, where she had been a resident for 14 years.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of the late George H. Slater and the late Nancy Wood Slater. She was a former employee of Tower Hosiery Mill. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. She was married to Howard C. Neese.
    Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are one daughter, Deborah Neese Hawkins of Wilmington; two sons, Howard P. Neese and wife, Mr. Faye, and Mr. Ronald Hugh Neese, both of Mebane; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
    The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Curtis Fussell. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Monday prior to the service at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham. At other times, they will be at the residence.

    MEBANE - Lori Lanphear Olson, 40, of 5421 Carowill Court, died Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at UNC Hospital after a 1 1/2 year illness. She was born in Yates County, N.Y., to Milton "Milt" Lanphear and Janet Willis Lanphear of Mebane and was the wife of Steven Ross Olson for 16 years of the home.
    Lori was a graduate of Elon College, a member of First Baptist Church of Elon and was in partnership with her husband as owner and operator of Mount Vernon Homes, Inc. for eight years.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home and her parents of Mebane include a daughter, Marissa Nicole Olson of the home; brother and sister-in-law, David S. and Marie Lanphear of Mebane; uncle, Norman Willis of New York; cousins, Kimberly Podoliak, Kristine Willis Weisbrig and Raymond Willis; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Milton S. Olson Jr. and Connie L. Olson. of Chapel Hill; nieces and nephew, McKenzie, Nikki and Morgun and sisters-in-law, Kimberly Olson-Fakih of New York and Shelly McVicker of Minnesota.

    MEBANE Mr. Gurney Overman, 81, of 2670 S. Jim Minor Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Hospice Home, after one year declining health, three months critical.The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Curtis Fussell and Dr. A.B. Plexico officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
    He was born in Alamance Co., the son of the late Newland Overman and the late Hattie Rudd Overman. He was a WW II U.S. Army veteran and was a retired route supervisor for Pepsi and a retired supervisor for Annadeen Hosiery. He was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Teer Overman, brothers, Winfred Overman, Garland Overman, Clarence Overman and Wilson Overman and sister Mrs. Carnell Thompson.
    He is survived by daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Davis of Elon and Mrs. Darlean Rene Willets of Mebane; three grandchildren, Mrs. Tanya Troxler, Mrs. Tina Blough and Mrs. Tammy Patterson; six great-grandchildren, Samantha, Christina, Stephanie, Tyler, Jessica and Blake.

    MEBANE — Mrs. Helen Cole Zachary Parrish, 79, of 1909 Jones Drive, died at 3:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after six months of failing health.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Mark Parrish and the late Mr. Lewis Flemming Zachary Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Samuel W. Cole and Mrs. Sussie Ward Cole, both deceased. She was retired from Cortina Yarn Mill and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Angela Z. McCormick of Naples, Fla. And Mrs. Patricia “Pat” Kenyon of Mebane; a son, Mr. Lewis Flemming Zachary Jr. of Mebane; three sisters, Mrs. Patsy Cole Richardson of Graham, Mrs. Mary Cole Lloyd of Mebane and Mrs. Gertrude Graves of Alamance; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Dot Wall, Mrs. Annie Mae Holmes and Mrs. Madge McIver, and a brother, Mr. John Cole.
    A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery by the Rev. Lewis F. Zachary Jr.

    GRAHAM- Mr. Walter Eugene Pope, 62, of 2175 Swepsonville Road, died Saturday, February 25, 2006 at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after a sudden illness. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham. Officiating will be the Rev. Tommy Evans. Burial will be in the Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
    A native of Durham County, he was the son of the late Marcelle Pope and the late Lois Workman Pope. He was the husband of Mrs. Anne Marshall Pope, who survives.
    Mr. Pope was a retired automotive mechanic, having worked for Nichols Dodge for 22 years. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.
    In addition to his wife, of the home, he is survived by two sons, Kevin Eugene Pope and his fiancé Miss Amy Boggs, both of Burlington and Johnny Lee Pope and his wife Bonnie of Graham; a sister Mrs. Olivia Tyre of Mebane; and a grandson Tyler Davis Pope of Burlington.
    He was preceded in death by his brother Dennis M. Pope.
    The family will receive friends Monday evening, from 6:00 until 8:00. Other times they will be at the residence.

    GRAHAM — Mrs. Mary Alice Hadley Rich, 85, of 2455 N.C. 54, died at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of two weeks.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Haskell Lee Rich, and the daughter of the late Alvis M. Hadley and the late Josie Crawford Hadley. She had been a sales clerk for Haw River Remnants Shop, and was a lifetime member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school class and was a member of Circle No. 2. She was a loving homemaker.
    Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Emily R. Cannon and husband, John, of Currituck, N.C.; two sons, Mr. Robert L. Rich and wife, Cindy, of Haw River and Mr. Thomas M. "Tom" Rich and wife, Betsy, of Graham; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Hadley. Mrs. Mina McGee Rimmer
STUART, Va. — Mrs. Mina Jane McGee Rimmer, 67, of 94 Wagoner Road, died at 1:15 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 10, 2000, at Vencore Hospital in Greensboro after an illness of one year.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Clyde Rimmer, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John McGee and Mrs. Lelia Livingston McGee, both deceased. She was a homemaker and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. Thomas Clyde Rimmer of Stuart and Mrs. William Miller Rimmer of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Maw Shambley of Mebane; a brother, Mr. Randolph McGee of Graham; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Martha Garner Roach
    MEBANE — Martha G. Roach, 76, of 2123 Stone Street Ext., Mebane went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 17, 2002 at Moses Cone Hospital after a period of declining health.
    She is survived by a devoted and loving family, which includes her husband of 51 years, James Edward Roach; one daughter, Sandra Hinkle and husband, Curtis; two grandchildren, Tammy Hinkle of Tennessee and Jamie Hinkle and wife, Angela, of Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Cecil Hatch and Mary Pendergraph; and one brother, Floyd Garner.
    Martha was preceded in death by her parents, Viola May Garner and William (Chippie) Arland Garner; and four brothers, James, Onzie, William A. and William V.
She was a dedicated employee at Cone Mills-Granite Finishing Plant in Haw River for 38 years before retiring.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home in Graham. The service will be officiated by the Rev. James (Buster) Florence and the Rev. Perry Ross. Burial will follow in Hawfields Cemetery.

    MEBANE — Mrs. Lula Holmes Gibson Rowland, 91, a resident of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields and formerly of 1447 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road, died at 5:18 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill after several years of failing health.
A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late R. W. Gibson and the late George Rowland. She was the daughter of the late William Holmes and Maggie Lorrena Jones Holmes. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Presbyterian Women of Hawfields. She was also a member of War Mother’s of Haw River. She was a retired textile employee.
    Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Nannie G. Overman of High Point, Mrs. Manie Richardson of Salisbury, and Mrs. Linda Douglas of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Clara Scott of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, Mebane; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Peggy Walters of Mebane and Mrs. JoAnn Jordan of Burlington; a stepson, Tommy Rowland of Mebane; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Robert Gibson; and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Jean Robertson.

    A native of Burlington, he was a son of the late William Daniel Rudd Sr. and the late Etta Pettigrew Rudd, and had lived in Reidsville most of his life. He was a former salesman for Hennis Freight Lines of Winston-Salem for 18 years, later he was sales manager for Carl Johnson Olds Cadillac Automobile Dealership for ten years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Lankford Rudd.
    Surviving are wife, Pansy Huskey Rudd of the home; one daughter, Sarah Jane Rudd Prook and son-in-law, Danny Prook of Reidsville; one son, William Daniel "Danny" Rudd III and daughter-in-law, Anne L. Rudd, of Reidsville; one stepdaughter, Dr. Victoria Walker Massey of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Ted, Justin, and Sarah Elizabeth Jones.

He was a former member of the Alamance County School Board, the Alamance County Social Services Board and director of the Alamance County Food Distribution Program. He was a member of Bula Masonic Lodge 409 AF&AM, and the Amran Shrine Temple.

    MEBANE - Mrs. Margaret White Scott, 87, of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields died Tuesday at the home.
    Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
    A native of Alamance County, she was a homemaker, a retired teacher and a member of Retired Teachers of Alamance.
    Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Nancy Scott Fuller of Greensboro; sons, P.W. Scott of Mebane, H. A. Scott of Jamestown; 14 grandchildren.
    The family will be at McClure Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. today, other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Scott, Route 2 (Hebron Church Road).

    MEBANE - Mr. Paisley White (P. W.) "Slick" Scott, 75, of 3448 Cook St., died Sunday, March 3, 2003, at his residence after several years of failing health. He was a native of Alamance County and the son of the late Henry Alvord and Margaret White Scott. He was a retired dairy farmer. Mr. Scott was a graduate of NC State University. He was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, where he served as a Lt. in the 82nd Airborne.
    Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Dorothy Smith Scott of the home; daughters, Mrs. Jane (Bob) Peters and Mrs. Libby (Woody) Isaac and Mrs. Sarah (Clinton) Bradley, all of Mebane, and Mrs. Anne Scott of Burlington; sons, Mr. Steven (Linda) Scott, Mr. Edwin (Terry) Scott and Mr. Walter Scott, all of Mebane; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Fuller of Greensboro; and a brother, Mr. H. A. Scott of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by a son, Paisley White Scott Jr. and a sister, Mrs. Margaret Graham Holleman.
    A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Hawfields Presbyterian Church by Dr. Curtis Fussell. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall of Hawfields Presbyterian Church.

    ARCHDALE — Mrs. Lula Mae Albright Smith, 86, of 5625 Old Thomasville Road, died at 9:15 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after six months of failing health, 18 days critical.
    A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. J. Van Smith, and the daughter of Mr. Charles Alexander Albright and Mrs. Lessie Euretta Brown Albright, both deceased. She was retired from Rental Uniforms and was a member of Pilot View Baptist Church in Thomasville.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Billie Van Garner of Burlington and Mrs. Lynn Smith Cannon of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Virginia Mullen and Mrs. Mozelle Vincent, both of Graham, Mrs. Carrie Lee Wiggins of Haw River, and Mrs. Louise Clark of Reidsville; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Lessie Ann Smith; a sister, Ms. Margaret Lipscomb; and two brothers, Mr. Goodman Albright and Mr. Jack Albright.

    MEBANE — Mr. Paul Haynes “Hank” Smith Jr., 51, of 2902 Lake Ridge Lane, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at his home after several months of failing health.
    A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Dianne Cobb Smith, who survives, and the son of Mr. Paul H. Smith Sr. and Mrs. Lucille Euliss Smith, both deceased. He was a systems analyst with General Electric Co. for 23 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors at Hawfields Childcare Center, member of the Alpacas Musical Group, and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Haw River Post. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and Sunday school teacher.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Miss Elizabeth Smith of the home; a son, Mr. Matthew Smith of the home; a sister, Mrs. Vicky Smith Turner of Liberty; foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Lindley of Graham; and two foster brothers, Mr. John Lindley of Graham and Mr. John Willardson of Wilkesboro.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Jane Ingle Smith and a sister, Miss Debra Smith.

    MEBANE — Phillip Lionel Smith, 68, of 2502 N.C. 119 South, The Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, formerly of 1206 South 5th St., died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after seven years of failing health, three weeks critical.
    Survivors include two sons, Phillip Mark (Diane) Smith of Graham and Darrell (Michelle) Smith of Haw River; his mother, Annie Jones Smith of Mebane; two sisters, Billie (Bob) Hair of Burlington and Karen (Harold) Oldham of Haw River; and two grandchildren, Dakota Smith of Graham and Peyton Smith of Haw River.

    SWEPSONVILLE — Mr. Cecil Leaton Stout Sr., 68, of 1465 N.C. 54-Swepsonville Road, died at 9:23 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at his home after three years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Ashley Stout, who survives, and the son of Mr. Bryant Stout and Mrs. Nannie Stout, both deceased. He retired salesman for Star Foods. He was a retired volunteer fireman with the Swepsonville Fire Department.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Donna Stout Curasi of Swepsonville; a son, Mr. Cecil Leaton “C. L.” Stout Jr. of Swepsonville; four sisters, Mrs. Mozelle Dawson and Mrs. Grace Boggs, both of Haw River, Mrs. Florence Watkins of Florida and Mrs. Beatrice Stout of Indiana; a brother, Mr. Paul Stout of Burlington; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Robert Stout, and a grandchild.
   The graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Jim Rosser.

    HAW RIVER — Mrs. Katherine Cagle Strother, 71, of 1879 Jimmie Kerr Road, died at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after two years of declining health.
    A native of Mertens, Texas, she was the wife of Mr. Jimmy J. Strother, who survives, and the daughter of the late Ollie Cagle and Gussie Mae Kennedy Cagle. She was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women. She had also been active with Hospice.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home include two daughters, Ms. Sandra Wilson of Old Fort and Mrs. Diane Harraghy and husband, Stephen, of Danville, Va.; a brother, Mr. Jan Cagle of O’Donnell, Texas; and five grandchildren, Ashley Wilson, Heather Wilson, Daniel Harraghy, Meaghan Harraghy, and Kaitlyn Harraghy.

    DURHAM — Mrs. Jessie Alexander Stanford Stubbins, 92, of 1412 Kirkwood Drive, died Friday evening, Feb. 5, 1999.
    A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. George Flavius Stubbins, who died in 1973. She was the daughter of Mr. Alexander Moses Stanford and Mrs. Margaret Frances Shaw Stanford, both deceased. She moved to Durham as a young child and attended Durham city schools. She was employed for many years by Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and was an active member of Fletcher’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
    Survivors include eight grandchildren.

    DURHAM - Mrs. Olivia H. Truckner, 69, of 119 Bren Rose Circle, died Monday morning at Duke University Medical Center after a lengthy illness related to her diabetes.
    Mrs. Truckner was born in Aurora Co., NC, the daughter of the late Harvey Nathaniel and Hancey Cuthrell Hollowell. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the Registrar's Office at Duke University from 1953 to 1990. She was an avid Duke fan and a gardener. Prior to her illness, Mrs. Truckner was a faithful member of McMannen United Methodist Church. Mrs. Truckner was preceded in death by a son, Michael Brent Truckner.
    Mrs. Truckner is survived by her husband, Willard B. Truckner; daughter, Bonnie T. Hamby and husband, Mark A., of Durham; son, Jeffrey W. Truckner and wife, Paula H., of Durham; grandchildren, Chris and Amy Truckner, both of Durham; and cousins, Lucille Bonner of Washington, NC and Bob Peele of Greenville, NC.

    MEBANE — Mr. Ronnie E. Tyre, 54, of 206 Fieldale Road, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2000, at his home after five years of failing health, two weeks critical.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Olivia “Libby” Pope Tyre, who survives, and the son of Mr. Wilbur Tyre and Mrs. Beatrice Loy Tyre, both deceased. He was an employee of Carolina Power and Light Co. He was an E6 staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam and two terms in Korea. In nine years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he received the Army Commendation medal.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Anna Tyre Kerr of Gibsonville; two sons, Mr. C. Ivan Tyre of Mebane and Mr. E. Ryan Tyre of the home; a sister, Mrs. Harriett Payne of Burlington; a brother, Mr. George Tyre of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

    MEBANE — Mr. Ralph William Webster, 82, of 7318 Hebron Church Road, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of three weeks.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Bertha Rice Webster, who survives, and the son of the late Mr. Cary N. Webster and Mrs. Addie Farrell Webster. He was retired from General Electric Corp in Mebane and was formerly employed with Tower Hosiery Mill in Burlington and Eagle Oil Co. in Mebane. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a Sunday school teacher.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Betsy Webster Shambley of Haw River and Mrs. Patricia Webster Wheeley of Cary; two sons, Mr. Clyde T. Webster of Mebane and the Rev. Stanley N. Webster of Portsmouth, Ohio; four grandchildren; a brother, Mr. Allen Webster of Burlington; and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Lynch of Haw River, Mrs. Rachel Walters of Raleigh, and Mrs. Ruby Lee Robertson of Burlington.

    MEBANE — Mr. Robert Norris “Bob” Webster, 72, of 1848 Webster Grove Lane, died at 5:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health, five weeks critical.
    A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Betsy Foster Webster, who survives, and the son of Mr. Leonidas Rowland Webster and Mrs. Ruth Covington Webster, both deceased. He was a retired sales representative for Boren Brick Co. and Triad Masonry. He was a charter member and lifetime member of Hawfields Civitan Club and an Air Force veteran of World War II. He was a life member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon, elder and choir member for 50 years.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Jane Webster Shugart of Houston; a son, Mr. David Norris Webster of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Betty W. Kite of Miami and Mrs. Marie W. Moffitt of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Thomas H. Webster of Mebane; and five grandchildren.

    Born in Alamance County to the late James Covington and the late Elizabeth Turner Covington, she was a member of the Hawfields Presbyterian Church where she was former church librarian, and a member of the N.C. State Grange.

    GRAHAM — Mrs. Leona Keen West, 83, of 2037 Yale Drive, died Wednesday Nov. 10, 1999, at Rehabilitation and Health Care of Alamance, after several years of failing health.
    A native of Buchanan County, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. Bertram West and the daughter of Mr. Pete Keen and Mrs. Luemma Low Keen, both deceased. She was retired from Copland Fabrics.
    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jean Loretta Cleghorn of Ranger, Va., and Mrs. Betty Crigger of Oakwood, Va.; one son, Mr. Robert “Bob” Keen Sr. of Graham; two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Street of Asheboro and Mrs. Minnie Hess of Graham; one brother, Mr. Ed Keen of Rowe, Pa.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceeded in death by her daughter, Ms. Phyllis Johnson.

    GRAHAM — Ralph Franklin Williams, 68, of 156 Dixon Road, died suddenly at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
    A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Shirley McBane Holmes Williams, who survives, and the son of the late Everette Matthew Williams and Mrs. Addie Dean Williams, who survives. He was an Army veteran and a member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church, Bingham Masonic Lodge, Burlington Shrine Club and Burlington Moose Lodge. He owned and operated Ralph’s Plumbing for over 35 years.
    Survivors other than his wife of the home and his mother of Graham include a daughter, Mrs. Tammy (Joe) Minnis of Graham; a stepdaugther, Ms. Cheryl Holmes of Raleigh; four stepsons, Gary Holmes of Elon, Doug Holmes of Greensboro, Sid Holmes of Arlington, Va., and David Holmes of Matthews; a sister, Ms. Virginia Carden of Graham; three brothers, Monroe Williams, Royce Williams and Garland “Pee Wee” Williams, all of Graham and eight stepgrandchildren.

    MEBANE — Mrs. Beatrice Dillard Wilson, 90, of 1405 Buckhorn Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at her home.
    Born May 4, 1909, in Granville County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Joseph Clay Wilson, and the daughter of Mr. Pelic Dillard and Mrs. Hattie Oniel Dillard, both deceased. She was a lifelong member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church and was an active member of the Senior Citizens Group. She was a homemaker.
    Survivors include three sons, Mr. Harry Wilson of Winston-Salem, Mr. Willard “Bud” Wilson of Raleigh and Mr. Arnold Wilson of Durham; one daughter, Ms. Clara Jo Wilson of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Blanche Edwards of Franklinton, Mrs. Norma Estes of Wake Forest and Mrs. Ruby Corley of Burgaw; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Iva Wilson and Ms. Floy Ritter; and two brothers, Mr. Cliff Dillard and Mr. Norman Dillard.

Mrs. Bernice Whitfield Wilson
    HAW RIVER — Mrs. Bernice Whitfield Wilson, 49, of 2446 Melfield Drive, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
    A native of Goldsboro, she was the wife of Mr. Orlander Wilson Jr., who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Evelyn Chadwick Whitfield, who survives, and the late Elder Frederick Whitfield. She was a school social worker and was named 1998 Social Worker of the Year for Orange County, Raleigh Region. She was a member of the North Carolina Social Workers Association and served on the Committee for Child Fatality of Orange County. She served 25 years as an educator in public service. She was a member of Melfield United Church of Christ, and served as musician for the Men’s Gospel and Youth choirs.
    Survivors other than her husband of the home and her mother of Goldsboro include a daughter, Ms. Jessica P. Wilson of the home; a stepdaughter, Ms. Stephanie Hewlett of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn (Woodrow) Wilson of Elon College, Mrs. Linda (James) Wiley of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Dorothy (E. J.) Blackman of Goldsboro; five brothers, Mr. John (Clara) Whitfield Sr. and the Rev. Timothy (Cynthia) Whitfield, both of Goldsboro, Mr. Michael (Patricia) Whitfield of Jamestown, Mr. Leslie E. Whitfield of Washington and Mr. Dwayne (Donna) Whitfield of Chesapeake, Va.; and three grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Rosa Whitfield.

    MEBANE - Joseph Clay Wilson, 93, of 1405 Buckhorn Rd., Mebane, died Friday May 8, 1998, at Hawfields Presbyterian Home after an extended illness. He was a native of Orange County.
    Clay was a lifetime member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon and Elder. He was a truck driver with Barnwell Brothers Trucking and Burlington Industries most of his working life, retiring in 1970. He enjoyed attend- ing all of the Drivers' suppers after his retirement. He moved to Buckhorn Road in 1961 and always enjoyed gardening and senior citizen's functions and trips over the years.
    He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mrs. Mary Catherine Jobe Wilson and Mr. Henry Albright Wilson; sister, Bertha; and brothers, Langston, Whit, Jule, Dan and Ben. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Dillard Wilson of the home; daughter, Clara Josephene Wilson of Columbus, OH; sons, Harry D. Wilson of Winston-Salem, Joseph W. Wilson of Raleigh, Arnold W. Wilson of Durham; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

    MEBANE - Mrs. Bessie Durham Wood, 95, of 404 S. 5th Street died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 1995, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
    Mrs. Wood was the widow of the late Mr. Norman Wood. She was born in Alamance County to the late Mr. William Presley Durham and the late Mrs. Frances Roark Durham and was retired. She lived in Mebane since 1919 and had been a member of Mebane United Methodist Church since 1934. She was also a member of the Mary McFarland Sunday School class, the Chancel Choir, and the United Methodist Women. She was a Circle Leader and was active in other church activities. She was also a member of the Friendly Garden Club, Benefit Book Club and Mebane Music Club.
    Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Mebane United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rex Brooks, pastor of Mebane United Methodist Church and the Rev. Carson Wiggins, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
    Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. John (Jeanne Durham) Davis Lea Sr. of Burlington; three grandsons, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
