Gwaltney, Esq., executor of the late Wm Barkley, of Gwaltney’s township, last week contracted with Mr. C.B. Webb, of the Statesville Marble and Granite Company, for a monument, or rather a group of monuments, provided for in the will of the deceased, to be place in the cemetery or burial grounds at Hopewell church, in that township. The deceased and several brothers and sisters were never married and seven graves are in this burial ground to be marked. Two thousand dollars was set apart for this purpose and some relatives were to furnish teams and labor to assist in getting the work done. This will be much the most expensive monument ever placed in Alexander county. The deceased and a brother or two and probably a sister had lived together to a ripe old age and were well-to-do and intelligent citizens.” abandoned church building abandoned church building Ella Brinkley Alexander E.
