Need to Find a Public Library?

Yours truly is a medical librarian and even with information delivery being my profession, I sometimes have trouble locating where the nearest public library is located when I’m doing my genealogical research.

This morning, I found this site that lets you search for public libraries in North Carolina.  It is provided by the National Center for Education Statistics and you can searchor browse by city or by county, specify what type of library you’re interested in, and you can even search by distance from a specific Zip code.  Check it out here!   I have also placed this link on the Consolidated List of NC Resources here on the NCGenWeb site.

Contact Form — you may also have noticed that red button on the left side of the NCGenWeb site page.  This links to a contact form widget that I created using a tool from http://visitorcontact.com.  I learned of Visitor Contact from Thomas over at Geneabloggers.com – thanks for the link Thomas!

Historical Maps of North Carolina

Historical maps can be helpful in understanding the geographical context of your ancestors lands.   Recently added to the Albemarle County site are two new links of NC Maps featured as part of the University of Georgia’s Hargett Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

To help promote the use of these maps for other NC researchers, I’ve also added links to them from the NCGenWeb Consolidated List of NC Resources page under the maps section.  There are other maps worth exploring on the site as well!

Edward Vance Little Home: Then & Now

This is the Edgar Vance Little home in Conover, NC circa 1912-1920:

This is the home as of recent, courtesy of Google Maps:

Now occupied by Dellinger Interiors, the home is in Conover, Catawba County, North Carolina.  Almost 100 years later, this home looks like it is still doing well; though of course you can see some changes have bene made. This is one of the tidbits of history you can learn by visiting the Conover, NC site of the NCGenWeb Project!  A link has now been added to the sidebar of the NCGenWeb under NC History & Genealogy.

When You Don’t Know the County

…you can use the search on the NCGenWeb sidebar to find it out as long as you have the city.   Rootsweb offers a convenient tool for finding out what county a particular city is in.  I’ve used this lookup repeatedly over the past year, but could never remember the direct URL.  Now that it is on the sidebar I know this will save me a lot of time and I hope it will save you time as well.

Randolph County RSS Feed

The Randolph County, NCGenWeb site now has an RSS feed.   Rodney has been posting “What’s New” items to the site for awhile now, yet the RSS Feed will enable his site updates to be delivered directly to you.

If you’re not familiar with RSS feeds, check out his post for a nice overview of the advantages.   Thanks Rodney for this enhancement to the Randolph County site.

Rodney also has a Twitter account for Randolph County.  These options make it easier than ever to keep up with the latest content.
