DIED ON TANKER
Horace Jones lost his life last
February(April) when the tanker in which
he was
returning from Port Arthur, Tex was sunk by a German submarine.
Mrs. Dorothy
Jones, his mother, said that her son died a hero. Officials of
the tanker
company said that Mr. Jones stayed in the engine room cutting off the steam
and preventing an explosion until 28 members of the crew escaped.
It was too late
to get away safely by the time Mr. Jones left the ship in the last
lifeboat.
Until recently Mr. Jones was an engineer
at the National Press Club Building.
Before that he had been at sea for
14 years. When war was declared,he went
back on a Merchant Marine
Boat.
