State Port Pilot 4 September 1935 Traces History Of This County H W Hood Mentions Some Highlights In Development Of Brunswick County; Was Established In Year 1746 Editor's Note: The other day we asked H W Hood for some historical information about Brunswick county. We cannot use the following article as we had planned, but we are using it as a news story because of the valuable information which it contains. Brunswick county was established in the year 1746, March 1. Twenty years later, in the year 1767, there were only 209 white men and 106 [black] men. This small population 18 years after the establishment of the county built the first county court house at Lockwoods Folly, now Supply, in the year 1764. In the year 1792, twenty years after the first court house was built at Lockwoods Folly, the county seat was moved to Smithville, now Southport. Fourteen years later in the year 1806, a second court house was built of wood on brick pillows. Forty-two years later in the year 1848 the present court house was built of brick and has now been in use for 87 years. A few years ago an addition was made to the building and the courtroom was made over. In the year 1862 the county court ordered the clerk and register of deeds to remove the records to a place of safety, a Federal attack being apprehended. The will books begin in the year 1763 and are complete; the deed books begin the same year and also are complete. The court dockets begin in 1781, the marriage register in 1810. Standing on the front porch of this historical old court house and looking riverwards you see the river basin, where as many as sixteen pirate vessels have been known to swing at anchor. In the distance old Fort Caswell, which the government commenced in the year 1826, and just across the street from the court house stands the old colonial Fort Johnson, the first fort in the province of North Carolina. |
