Opened with Prayer. The session having learned that Benjamin Hines a member of this session departed this life on the 16th of this month (July) adopted the subjoined minutes as expression of their views and feelings on the occasion.
Whereas it has pleased Almighty God
to remove by Death on the 16th instant our beloved Brother Benjamin
Hines for more than fifty five years a Member of the Church and for
thirty six year a Ruling Elder in the same, the Session of this
church duly assembled, desire to bear testimony to his consistency
and worth as a Christian man and to his fidelity and stewardship as
a Christian Elder. |
||||||||||||||||||
While they mourn over their loss in
his death, they do not presume to question the wisdom or the loving
kindness of our Heavenly Father in taking him away. They rather find
a special cause for gratitude in the goodness which spared him so
long and gave him so large a share of bodily health and still more
in that converting grace which brought him in early life to a saving
knowledge of the truth as it is in Christ and thus inclined to
enable him to spend so many years in the service of his divine Lord
and Master. |
||||||||||||||||||
They would especially bear witness
to his modest worth, to his forgetfulness of self and his
consideration for the comfort and feelings of others, to his clear
conceptions of Truth and duty and to his steadfastness in
maintaining the same. For these qualities and further for his
sweetness of temper, his kindness of heart, his honesty of purpose,
for his constant and punctual attendance upon the services of the
sanctuary and for his habitual reverence and devotedness in the
house of God, this Session would especially commend him as an
example worthy to be followed. |
||||||||||||||||||
They pray that the great Head of the
Church will raise up another in his place, who shall follow him as
he followed Christ. |
||||||||||||||||||
By resolution a Copy of the above Minutes was directed to be sent to the family of the deceased and also copies to be sent to our local paper and the North Carolina Presbyterian with request that they publish the same. Session adjourned with prayer.

remove by death our Brother John Wilson from his earthly home to, as
we trust, the Heavenly fold, it becomes us who remain to record as
we bear testimony to his worth and usefulness. |
||||||||||||||||||
Therefore, be it resolved:
1st. That in Dr. Wilson we have a bright example of what the grace of God can do in softening, refining and forming the pure man; that in Dr. Wilson we can see what Religion can do in making the upright citizen, the kind and loving husband, the tender and affectionate Father and the meek and Christian soldier. Dr. Wilson was a man of Prayer. He had a near access in his supplication at a throne of Grace and was gifted in releating [sic] the promises of God and trusted that God would give him whatever he asked in accordance with the Will of God. Dr. Wilson was ready at all times to bow the knee to God whether at home or in the sanctuary or by the bed side of the sick.
2nd. That we hold in kind remembrance his gentleness, kindness of greeting and readyness [sic] in discharge of duty, that we shall endeavor to emulate him as far as he followed Christ, that as individuals and as a body we will strive to gain an entrance into the Celestial City, that when that great company which no man can number shall stand before the throne of God, that when we have on the pure white robes of Christ’s righteousness upon us and may be welcomed to a seat on the right hand of God, when we shall dwell forever more and there shall be no more sorrow and no more tears, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.
3rd. That this minute and resolution be sent to the Family of our deceased Brother and to the North Carolina Presbyterian to be published.
