In the name of God Amen I Thomas Spencer of the
County of Caswell and province of North Carolina, being weak in body
but of perfect since and memory, taking into consideration the
shortness and uncertainty of this transitory life and that it is
appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last
will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say)
principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the
hands of God that gave all; and so for my Body recommend it to the
earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the
discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general
resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of
God, and as touching such worldly goods wherewith it has pleased God
to Bless me with in this life, I give, Devise and dispose of the
same in a manner and form following: that is to say,
Item, I give and Bequeath to my well beloved son John Spencer Two
hundred acres of land to be of the corner of the Tract of Land
whereon I live that joynes Rowland Hughes, not touching my
Plantation or Mill.
Item, I also give and Bequeath to my well beloved daughter Frankey
Spencer my bay mair name Foly, (but the colt that she is now with
fold with to be left on the plantation being excepted to dispose of
otherwise), one feather bed and furniture, one cow and one black
walnut chest and one side saddle.
Item, I give and Bequeath to my well beloved daughter Betty Spencer
one year old mare colt that came out of my bay mare called Foly, one
womans saddle, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and one black
walnut chest.
Item, I give and Bequeath to my well beloved daughter Bobby Pinnix
one roan mare and one cow that she already has in possession and one
womans saddle that she has not yet received.
Item, I also bequeath to my well beloved daughter Mary Spencer one
bay horse (colt that came out of my Wifes mare) one womans saddle,
one feather bed and furniture, one cow and one black walnut chest.
Item, I also Bequeath to my well beloved daughter Susana Spencer one
bay horse colt, that is called hers, one womans saddle, one feather
bed and furniture, one cow and also one black walnut Chest. I also
leave my Still to be sold to the highest bidder and the money to be
equally divided between my three sons (to wit, Benjamin Spencer,
John Spencer and Thomas Spencer) all and singular the rest of my
Estate be it what kind or quality soever I leave to my well beloved
wife, Elizabeth Spencer during her natural life or widowhood
(exception my Stallion and Bay Horse called the Braken horse which
is to be sold to pay my debts) and at her death or inter marriage
all is to return to my son, Thomas Spencer.
Lastly I so appoint my well beloved wife, Elizabeth Spencer and my
two sons, Benjamin Spencer and John Spencer whole and sole Executors
of this my last will and Testament revoking and disannulling all and
every other Will or Wills by me here-before made, publishing and
declaring this to by my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof
I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this eleventh day of July in
the year of our Lord Christ One Thousand Seven Hundred and
Eighty-one.
