His obituary appeared as follows: COLUMBIA, S.C. - The funeral service for Mr. Fred Rayford Caldwell, 75, of Columbia, was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home with an Eastern Star service. Entombment, with military honors and Masonic rites, followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rev. J.C. Duncan officiated. Pallbearers were Thomas L. Coker, James C. Scarborough, Leland Black, Dr. James J. Nyland, C.B. Lenard, Jeffery Lee Hall, Dr. Gregg W. McKenzie and Dr. John W. Pitner. Honorary pallbearers were Masons and Eastern Star members. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the New York Chapter of the American Diabetes Association (note: Fred Caldwell NYC office); Acacia Lodge No. 94, or Columbia No. 59 O.E.S. Mr. Caldwell passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007. Born June 18, 1932, in Maiden, N.C., he was a son of the late James H. and Edith Canipe Caldwell. After serving in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, Mr. Caldwell studied architecture at Tampa University in Tampa and engineering at the Florida Institute of Technology. He completed his education at the Elise Frank School of Arts in 1959. His expertise in Office Planning and Design guided him in the completion of thousands of dentist, orthodontist, and periodontist offices throughout South Carolina and the southeast. His unique designs earned him the respect of those he worked with in the dental industry. He loved his work and continued designing offices until his death. A resident of Columbia for 43 years, Mr. Caldwell was a member of the Masonic Acacia Lodge No. 94 AFM, Columbia Chapter No. 59, Order of the Eastern Star and was Past Grand Patron of the Order. Mr. Caldwell is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Judy Birge Caldwell; a son, James Burritt "Brett" Caldwell of New York, N.Y.; brothers, Warren G. Caldwell, Frank Caldwell, Dwight Caldwell, Joe B. Caldwell and Herbert Caldwell; a sister-in-law, Kathleen M. Birge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Caldwell was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Kermit Caldwell, James J. Caldwell and Charles Caldwell; and a sister, Martha Deanne Thomas.
