He died on 16 February 2005 at the age of 83 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Mr. Foy Calvin Hefner Sr., 83, of Hickory, died Feb. 16, 2005, at his residence. Born March 31, 1921, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Roby A. and Rosa Lail Hefner. A lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hickory, he served on the church council; Sunday school teacher; Synod Building Committee; president of the Brotherhood; GLC Delegate Convention; board member of Lutherock; a member of South Western District Council; Synod Council; Global Mission volunteer; and a member of District Church Council and National Church Committees. He was a volunteer fireman for the Viewmont Fire Department; a former member of the Hickory Police Department; and a member of the Viewmont Optimist Club, having served as president, secretary and treasurer and as state secretary for the state Optimist Club. He was a life member of Optimist International and a member of the Republican organization. He was formerly in the import/export business and organized the World Trade Club. He retired from Hefner Industries, was former owner and founder of the WIRC radio station and superintendent of Knit Sock Knitting Mills. He was one of the founders of King Hickory Furniture Co. and a former Hickory city councilman. Mr. Hefner was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd Hefner, Berman Hefner, Roy (Bill) Hefner and Ira Hefner; and three sisters, Bertie Bowman, Clara Sherrill and Pearl Bryant. Survivors include his wife, Katheryn Sanders Hefner of Hickory; two daughters and a son-in-law, Miya and Thomas Teague of Hickory and Jane Hefner-Brightwell of Winston-Salem; three sons, Calvin Hefner and wife, Cassaundra, Phillip Hefner and friend, Mark Houston, and David Hefner and fiancee, Angela, all of Hickory; a brother, the Rev. Richard Hefner of Hickory; grandchildren, Michael Brightwell, Amanda Leigh Teague, Jeff Fu, Thomas (T.W.) Wiley Teague Jr. and Justin Houston; caregivers, Dianne Gibbs and Joy Icard; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Jason Sigmon at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hickory. A private interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Katheryn "Kat" SANDERS was born on 4 September 1930. She died of cancer on 19 January 2010 at the age of 79 in Catawba County, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Katheryn Sanders Hefner died peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a brief battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Foy C. Hefner Sr., who died in 2005; and her parents, John H. Sanders and Mamie Young Sanders. Surviving her are her children, Miya Ruth Teague (Thomas Wiley Teague), Foy Calvin Hefner Jr., Jane Elizabeth Hefner Brightwell, Phillip Allen Hefner (Thad Cline), and David Eugene Hefner (Angela Hefner). Also surviving her are grandchildren, Amanda Teague Fu (Jeff Fu), Thomas W. Teague Jr., Michael Lee Brightwell (Sabrina Brightwell), Justin Houston, Samantha Chapman and Miranda Lail Holden; and one great-grandchild, Elija Holden. In addition to accompanying her husband Foy on his many business trips to Italy, forging international business ties with Comez Industries, Kat enjoyed and was proud of her various missionary work for the Lutheran Church in Colombia, South America, and her representation of the church in San Francisco at an early AIDS awareness conference. Kat and Foy were instrumental in the conception and creation of Camp Lutherock in Newland. Kat also was active in the Hickory Woman's Club, as well as the American Business Women's Association, being past president. Kat founded and ran Kay Leasing, an industrial business machines subsidiary of Comez Industries. She was an avid supporter of education in the Catawba Valley area and hosted the annual Teacher's Tea for more than 10 years. But above and beyond all of her accomplishments, Kat was most proud of her children and their families. She relished in each one's successes and achievements and adored all the children brought into the family. She truly enjoyed being the matriarch of a large and boisterous clan. Katheryn was predeceased by two siblings, Clifford Sanders and Huitt Sanders; and is survived by two, J.C. Sanders and Mary E. Sanders. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, with the Revs. David Keck and Larry Meyer and Vicar Scott Berry officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the church. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
