He died on 29 September 2005 at the age of 84 in Valdese, Burke County, North Carolina. He was buried in Burke Memorial Gardens, Morganton, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: VALDESE - Herbert M. "Mack" Shook, 84, of Faet Street, Valdese, died peacefully in his sleep on Sept. 29, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Mack was born Nov. 19, 1920, in Catawba County to the late Quintus M. Shook and Mamie Isenhour Shook. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II; retired from Alba-Waldensian with over 50 years of service; worked with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 202, in Valdese; and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Valdese, where he was on the board of stewards, head usher and a member of the Methodist Men. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Faye Poteat Shook; a son, Terry Lee Shook; five brothers, Russell Shook, Claude Shook, Clyde Shook, Guy Shook and Huitt Shook; and two sisters, Maude Houk and Floy Page Kendall. Survivors include his son, Don Shook of Valdese; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at First United Methodist Church in Valdese. Officiating will be the Rev. Andrew Brown. Military rites will be given at the church by the American Legion Post 234 Ceremonial Team. Interment will be private in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Valdese, where the casket will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Mr. Shook may also be viewed by family and friends at Heritage Funeral Service on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Road, Valdese, N.C. 28690, or First United Methodist Church, P.O.
