Bumgarner and Viola (Polly) Poe Bumgarner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Faith Hollar Bumgarner. He is survived by his brother, Larry Bumgarner and wife, Peggy, of King; nephew, Mike Bumgarner of King; niece, Suzan Mabe and husband, Roger, of Riva, Md.; great-nieces, Jessie and Sarah Bumgarner, both of King; great-nephews, Isaac and Jacob Mabe of Riva, Md.; and an extended family of special friends. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, in the chapel at Bass-Smith Funeral Home, with Larry Bumgarner officiating. Burial will follow at Houck's Chapel in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends today, Saturday, July 31, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev, Larry Gwyn BUMGARNER was born on 17 September 1934 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 4 July 2011 at the age of 76 in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY The Rev. Larry Gwyn Bumgarner, 76, went to Heaven on Monday, July 4, 2011 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. Born Sept. 17, 1934, in Hickory, he was the son of the late Hugh Gwyn Bumgarner and Viola Poe Bumgarner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved brother, James Edward Bumgarner. Rev. Bumgarner was a graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and Duke Divinity School. He was a member of the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference. He served in several offices throughout the years and was very active in the United Methodist Youth. He served the following churches: Hildebran Methodist Church in Hildebran, from Oct. 1956 to June 1959, Friendship Methodist Church in Greensboro, from June 1959 to June 1963, Morganton Circuit in Morganton, from June 1963 to June 1965, Johnsontown in Thomasville, from June 1965 to June 1969, Park Avenue Methodist Church in Salisbury, from June 1969 to June 1972, and Trinity United Methodist Church, in King, from June 1972 to June 1978. Trinity was the last church he served. He remained a loyal member of Trinity, which he loved and a humble servant of God until his death. Following retirement from the ministry he owned a furniture business in Rural Hall. His passion was missions and for the past 26 years he spent 2 weeks each year donating his time and talents in several countries. Additionally he enjoyed working alongside his son, Mike at various motorcycle rallies throughout the United States. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Peggy Jonas Bumgarner of King; son, Michael Hugh Bumgarner of King; daughter, Suzan Bumgarner Mabe and her husband, Roger of Riva, Md.; four grandchildren, Jessica Bumgarner of Bristol, Va., Sarah Bumgarner of King, Isaac and Jacob Mabe both of Riva, Md.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sadie and Leo Reese of Taylorsville and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 8, at Fairview Cemetery in Hickory, with the Rev. David Childers officiating. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church in King. The family will receive friends following the service.
