Joe Davis REITZEL, son of Guy Elmore REITZEL and Nellie Long SETZER, was born on 1 October 1930 in Catawba County, North Carolina.2662 He died on 31 August 2005 at the age of 74 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Catfish community, Catawba County, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Joe Davis Reitzel, 74, of First Avenue, NW, died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at Catawba Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Born Oct. 1, 1930, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Guy and Nellie Setzer Reitzel. A lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont, he retired from Joan Fabrics and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army and having received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. Mr. Reitzel went to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 2005. He was an avid gardener and generous with his harvest to his friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lineberger; a brother, Odell “Chub” Reitzel; and an infant brother, Glenn Reitzel. Survivors include his wife, Betty Marlowe Reitzel of the home; four daughters, Mary Jo Edwards and husband, John, of Claremont, Roberta Presnell and boyfriend, Kenneth Lee, of Newton, Treena
Briggs and husband, Bill, of Hickory and Marla Icard and husband, Jack, of Bethlehem; special friend and caregiver, Donna Stepp of Hickory; a sister, Ruby Hefner of Claremont; a brother, Bill Reitzel of Hickory; grandchildren, A.J., Manda, Kurt, Cheri, Ronnie Jr., Lee, Kyle, Seth, Jacob and Alison; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Craig Schultz at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by members of American Legion Post 48. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. The family will be at the church from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 5759 Bolick Road, Claremont, N.C. 28610; Lutheran World Relief; or to disaster relief of one’s choice.
