Virginia BLACK was born on 12 April 1910 in Gaston County, North Carolina. She died on 10 January 2006 at the age of 95 in Abernethy Laurels, Newton, North Carolina. She was buried in Eastview Cemetery, Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows:2597 NEWTON - Mrs. Virginia Black Deal, 95, and a longtime resident of Newton, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at Abernethy Laurels. She was born April 12, 1910, in the Gaston County community of Worth and then moved with her family to Lenoir in 1915. She was the third child of the late Bertie Peterson Black of Stanley and the late Luther David Black of Cherryville. Mrs. Deal was married to Marcus Everette Deal of Newton from June 17, 1935, until his death in 1985. A graduate of Lenoir High School and Davenport College in Lenoir, she first taught at Philadelphia School in Caldwell County and then returned to college to complete a business course. While living in Lenoir, she was a secretary for attorney Mark Squires during the time he and Sam Ervin were instrumental in getting the Blue Ridge Parkway project started. She retired from the Newton-Conover City Schools system as an attendance counselor in 1975. Before that position, she was a secretary with the Newton-Conover City Schools system and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. Earlier, Mrs. Deal was secretary for Catawba Valley Community College, and for many years she was a secretary with Newton Glove Co. Mrs. Deal was active in local organizations. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Newton, where she served as an elder, president of Women of the Church and a Sunday school teacher. Due to her interest in history, she volunteered as a docent with the Catawba County Historical Association, was a member of the Ransom-Sherrill Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, former president of the Brown-Fisher Association, and contributed a chapter in the family history, “Michael Braun of the Old Stone House.” The ancestral home near Salisbury is on the National Register of Historic Places. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Luther David Black Jr. and Rodney Alfred Black; two sisters, Mildred Black Atwell and Ruth Black Tuttle; and a son-in-law, Larry Charles Bostian. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Deal Bostian of Denver; a granddaughter, Ida Bostian-Hahn and husband, Jeff Hahn, of Black Mountain; a grandson, Charles Marcus Bostian and wife, Carol Barker Bostian, of Nebo; a sister, Mrs. Sarah Black Haraldsen of Newton; and a number of loving nieces. A service of remembrance will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Newton. The Rev. Cynthia Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Newton. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 701 N.
