He died on 12 August 2010 at the age of 81 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Hickory, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Kenneth Eugene Spencer of Hickory teed off in the game of life on March 16, 1929. He spent his time in the sand traps and in the rough, but for the most part enjoyed the fairway. Ken eagled the final hole on Aug. 12, 2010. Mr. Spencer served with the U.S. Army Transport Service and Military Transport Service for six and a half years before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and received a graduate assistantship with the University of Tennessee, where he was with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service. He taught accounting at Clevenger Business College and CVCC. Kenneth was president of Herman Chairs Inc., Innsbrook Furniture Inc. and retired from Thomasville Furniture. He was active in the Hickory Civitan Club. He was an avid golfer, and had served as president and former board member of Brushy Mountain Golf Club. He enjoyed traveling through the western United States, Canada, Europe and the Southeast Pacific. He was a member of First Advent Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob Basil Spencer and Lottie Elizabeth Lail Spencer; brother, J.C. Spencer; brothers-in-law, Robert Marlowe and the Rev. Harold Crocker. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Preslar Spencer of Hickory; son, Kenneth Wayne Spencer and wife, Jennifer, of Bethlehem; daughter, Debbie Munday and husband, Chris Parker, of Bethlehem; grandchildren, Steven, Regan and Rex Spencer, Ben Munday, Jonathan and Taylor Parker; brother, Charles Howard Spencer and wife, Ilze, of Fort Mill, S.C.; sisters, Virginia Crocker of Wilmington, Jeanette Baxter and husband, Martin, of Williamsburg, Va., and Shelba Marlowe of Hickory; sister-in-law, Mary Sue Spencer of Hickory; and numerous nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at First Advent Christian Church in Hickory. The Rev. Dennis Spivey and the Rev. Rick Crocker will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, with military rites conducted by the Hickory American Legion Post 48. The family will receive from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at Drum Funeral Home in Hickory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Advent Christian Church, 1941 N. She died on 19 July 2012 at the age of 74 in Pallative Care & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, North Carolina. She was buried in New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON Mrs. Shelba Jean Marlowe, 74, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. She was born April 30, 1938, in Catawba County, the daughter of Basil and Lottie Lail Spencer. She was a charter member of Carolina Style Sweet Adelines of Hickory and was retired from Hickory Sheet Metal after more than 40 years of service. An avid horse enthusiast, she loved to travel. Devoted to her family, Shelba had a special individual love for each and every person. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert James Marlowe; two brothers, Kenneth and J.C. Spencer; sister-in-law, Peggy Preslar Spencer; and brother-in-law, Pastor Harold Crocker. She is survived by a daughter, Melanie Marlowe, of Newton; son, Eric Marlowe, of Newton; two sisters, Virginia Crocker, of Wilmington, and Jeanette Baxter and husband, Martin, of Toano, Va.; sister-in-law, Mary Sue Spencer, of Hickory; brother, Charles Spencer and wife, Ilze, of Fort Mill, S.C.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Marlowe, Jame Sloan and fiance, Adam Patten and Kristin Pezzimenti and husband, Joey; two great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Makenna; and all of her traveling buddies. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at Catawba Funerals and Cremations. Pastor Rick Crocker will officiate. Burial will follow in New Jerusalem Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
