3684. Katherine WILFONG was born in 1907 in North Carolina.1245,2189 She died on 28 March 2006 at the age of 99 in Eden, Rockingham, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: NEWTON - Catawba County native Katherine Yoder Wilfong Gardiner, a member of two pioneer local families, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the home of her daughter in Eden. She was 99. A former resident of Newton, she had also resided in Taylorsville, Washington, D.C., and Kill Devil Hills. Born Feb. 9, 1907, to the late John Gordon Wilfong and Annie Katherine Yoder Wilfong, she was married to Thomas Branston Gardiner, who died in 2001. She was educated in local schools and at a girls' academy at Brevard. Mrs. Gardiner was associated with the former Lucy-Lou women's apparel store in Newton, and the family moved to Washington in 1948, when her husband, who was affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service, was promoted to the department headquarters. Surviving are her daughter, Katherine Gardiner Swain of Eden; a granddaughter; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Private graveside rites will be conducted at a later date in Eastview Cemetery in Newton, where her husband and parents are buried. Memorials are suggested to the Catawba County Museum of History, P.O. Box 73, Newton, N.C. 28658. Mrs. Gardiner was a benefactor of the museum, donating Yoder and Wilfong family articles to its collection. The Gardiner family has entrusted arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. [Published in the Hickory Daily Record on 3/31/2006]
