Ruth HEDRICK was born on 7 August 1931 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 17 August 2012 at the age of 81 in Pallative Care & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY Ruth Hedrick Downs, 81, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley after a brief illness. Ruth was born Aug. 7, 1931, in Catawba County, to the late Charles and Hattie Poovey Hedrick. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Downs; sister, Vera Shook; brothers, Kermit Hedrick, Glenn Hedrick, and Bryce Hedrick. She was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Altar Guild and Financial Secretary for her church for many years, a former Girl Scout Leader and a homemaker. She enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers, cookbooks, and loved to travel. Surviving are a son, Timothy Downs, of Bethlehem; daughters, Karen Downs, of Hickory, and Sharon Downs, of Hickory; grandchildren, Matthew Downs, of Hickory, Amber Downs, of Hickory, Christopher Downs, of Sylva, Samantha Downs, of Hickory; sister, Christine Killian, of Hickory; brother, Jack Hedrick, of Gulfport, Miss.; favorite niece, Faye Starnes; a number of nieces and nephews; and goddaughter, Eva Lark Helton, of Taylorsville. The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 20, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church with the Rev.
