He died on 15 February 2008 at the age of 82 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - A. Carl Eckard, 82, of Hickory, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at his residence after a period of declining health. Carl was born April 23, 1925, in Catawba County to the late Arthur and Edna Lail Eckard. He was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, ELCA and also a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Navy, having served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Nicholson. He was a retired owner and operator of Carl Eckard Builders. He is survived by his wife, Geneva Eckard of the home; son, Michael Eckard of Hickory; daughters, Deborah Eckard, his caregiver and angel and Cathy Eckard, both of Hickory; brothers, Harold Eckard and Jay Lee Eckard, both of Hickory; sister, Joann Killian of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, ELCA, with the Rev. Richard A. Hites officiating. Interment will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 48. The family will receive friends Monday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, ELCA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Eckard, Ray Eckard and Jack Eckard, and sisters, Pauline Triplett and Irene Clontz.
