2534. Duffy Eugene HERMAN was born on 28 March 1909 in Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 2 July 2008 at the age of 99 in Statesville, Iredell County, North Carolina. He was buried in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: STATESVILLE - Duffy Eugene Herman, 99, a resident of West End Avenue in Statesville, died at home Wednesday, July 2, 2008. He was born March 28, 1909, in Newton to the late Claude Eugene Herman and Sarah "Sally" Catherine Witherspoon Herman Simmons. Mr. Herman was a retired grocer who derived much pleasure from gardening, traveling, square-dancing and his church. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Newton and a member of the Men's Bible Class. In his late 60s and early 70s, he enjoyed delivering "Meals on Wheels" to the home-bound. Twice married, Mr. Herman was preceded in death by his first wife of 37 years, Ruth Steele Herman, his second wife of 21 years, Willie Lou Goodnight Warlick Herman, and a brother, Thomas Herman. Survivors include sons, Stephen G. Herman and wife, Evelyn Herman, of Statesville and Jeffry Eugene Herman and wife, Gloria Herman, of Acworth, Ga.; stepson, William R. Warlick of Lincolnton; grandsons, Benjamin B. Herman and Chadwick B. Herman; granddaughters, Cassandra "Sandy" Lynn Thompson and Kristen Denise Benfield, all residing in the greater Charlotte area; stepgrandsons, William R. Warlick Jr. and Thomas D. Warlick; and stepgranddaughter, Terri Lou Salmon. Survivors also include great-granddaughters, Briar E. Herman and Sidney and McKensie Thompson; great-grandsons, Tristen Thompson and Michael Helms; and a number of nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2008, in the Gomedela Room of First United Methodist Church at 300 N. Main St. of Newton, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastors Daniel G. Martin and Amy Freeze officiating and burial in Catawba Memorial Gardens.
