Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Olivia Spencer Huffman, 94, of Hickory, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Carolina Rehab after a period of declining health. Olivia was born Oct. 9, 1913, in Catawba County to the late Dallas Fannel and Hester Leona Miller Spencer Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Cecil Spencer, Basil Spencer, Hazel Spencer, Odius Spencer, Grover Spencer and Dallas Spencer Jr., and a grandson, Tony Lee Huffman. She was a member of Penelope Baptist Church and co-owner of Debbie Knitters Hosiery Mill. Surviving are her husband of 71 years, Melvin Thomas Huffman; sons and daughters-in-law, Earl and Gail Huffman and Danny and Judy Huffman, all of Hickory, and Carroll and Jane Huffman of Belews Creek; sisters, Katherine Bolick of Conover and Grace Simmons of Greensboro; a brother, James Denny Spencer of Alabama; eight grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, great,-great-grandchildren and extended family and friends. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Grinnell officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Thursday, at Hickory Funeral Home. He died on 13 August 2011 at the age of 92 in Carolina Rehab Center, Connelly Springs, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY Melvin T. Huffman, 92, passed away Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Carolina Rehab. Melvin was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Catawba County to the late Noah and Artie Hildebrand Huffman. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Olivia Spencer Huffman, a brother, DA Huffman, and grandson, Tony Lee Huffman. Melvin was co-owner of Debbie Knitters Hosiery Mill, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was also a member of Penelope Baptist Church. He is survived by three sons, Earl Huffman and wife Gail of Hickory, Danny Huffman and wife Judy of Hickory, Carroll Huffman and wife Jane of Belews Creek. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family and friends. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Grinnell officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday at Hickory Funeral Home from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by The American Legion Post #48.
