Donald Hugh LAFONE was born on 26 September 1937 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 7 December 2010 at the age of 73 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, North Carolina. He was buried in St. Luke's Lutheran Church Cemetery on Houston Mill Road, Catawba County, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Donald Hugh Lafone, 73, of Conover, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was born Sept. 26, 1937, in Catawba County, a son of the late George Lafone and Louella Baker Lafone. Donald began working as a heavy equipment operator at the age of 12, and continued that until he started Fran Trucking Company in 1974. He grew up in St. John's Lutheran Church, and was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He loved antiques and spending time at his beach house on Oak Island. Mr. Lafone is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances Bailey Lafone; daughters, Donna Whitson and husband, Wayne, of Hickory, Debbie Herman and husband, Donald, of Conover, Darlene Eckard and husband, Richard, of Conover; brothers, Ira Lafone and wife, Kathy, of Conover and Johnny Lafone, of Lincolnton; sister, Linda Powell and husband, Dickie, of Conover; grandchildren, Christopher Haas and wife, Tasha, Markeisha Haas, Kim Walker and husband, Shane, Lori Sipe and husband, Mark, Charlotte "Charley" Kerley and husband, Brian, Nicholas Herman and wife, Shannon, La Shae Herman, Tabitha Spencer, Samantha Sears, Jonathan Eckard, and Jennifer McLain and husband, Josh; and great-grandchildren, Emily and Abby Haas, Malachi and Makenzie Haas, Payne Walker, Elizabeth and Brandon Sipe, Ayden Kerley, and Jaxson McLain. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Conover, with the Rev. Jeff Lindsay officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with graveside Masonic rites conducted by Conover Masonic Lodge 709. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3916 Springs Road, Conover, N.C. 28613.
