Richard Howell HERMAN was born on 23 April 1929 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 20 January 2009 at the age of 79 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. He was buried in Conover City Cemetery, Conover, Catawba, North Carolina. His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Richard Howell Herman, 79, of Conover, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Mr. Herman was born April 23, 1929, in Catawba County to the late Earl R. Herman and Edith Herman Smith. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover and retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of service. Mr. Herman later worked for 18 years at Siecor Corp., developing fiber optic cable. He is survived by his daughter, Frances Victoria "Vickie" Brown (Dennis) of Moncks Corner, S.C.; grandchildren, Emily Denise Brown and Patrick McGregor Brown; cousin, Jack Abernathy and wife, Nellie, of Conover; special friends, Lynn Dagenhart and wife, Trish, and Scarlet Harrington, all of Hiddenite; close neighbors, Darla Abernethy and Scott Hilton of Conover; and his friends at the Conover Police Department. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Concordia Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Michael Kane officiating. Burial will follow in Conover City Cemetery, with Masonic burial rites provided by Conover Masonic Lodge 709. Full military honors will follow by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Drum Funeral Home in Conover and from 1 to 1:45 p.m., prior to the service Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Concordia Christian Day School, 215 Fifth Ave., SE, Conover, N.C. 28613 or Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 28605.
