5754. Aleck "Jack" BEARD was born on 16 June 1923 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 9 February 2009 at the age of 85 in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. He was buried in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Aleck "Jack" Beard, 85, of Conover, passed away Feb. 9, 2009, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health. Aleck was born June 16, 1923, in Catawba County to the late Lawrence and Florence Kanupp Beard. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Bowman; and three brothers, Ralph Beard, Winford Beard and Lawrence "June" Beard. He was a member of Highland United Methodist Church and was owner and operator of Beard Furniture. Surviving are his wife, Betty Lail Beard of the home; a daughter, Marcie B. Shoe and her special friend, Brady Hutchinson, of Conover; a brother, Maura L. "Moe" Beard and wife, Betty, of Hickory; and grandsons, Keaton Beard and Jackson Shoe, both of Conover. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Hickory Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Marc Reynolds officiating. Interment will be in Catawba Memorial Park. Aleck "Jack" BEARD and Betty Jean LAIL were married estimated 1949. Betty Jean LAIL was born on 23 June 1931 in Mississippi. She died on 20 July 2010 at the age of 79 in Pallative Care & Hospice of Catawba Valley, Newton, North Carolina. She was buried in Catawba Memorial Park, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. Her obituary appeared as follows: CONOVER - Betty Jean Lail Beard, 79, passed away July 20, 2010, at Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley. Betty was born June 23, 1931, in Mississippi to the late Loye Edgar and Rosa Ennis Lail. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Junior B. Martin; and second husband, Aleck "Jack" Beard; and two brothers. Surviving are daughters, Marcie Beard Huthinson and husband, Brady, of Conover and Pat Martin Tabor of Hickory; sons, Jimmy C. Martin and wife, Joy, Mark S. Martin and Todd A. Martin, all of Hickory; sister, Ruth Townsend of Taylorsville; and a brother, Jack Lail and wife, Evelyn, of Texas; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Services will be Friday, July 23, 2010, at 3 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest Richards officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park.
