Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Kate Bumgarner Miller, of Hickory, died Jan. 8, 2010, at Continuum Courtyard in Knoxville, Tenn. She was born at her home in Hickory on June 29, 1927, to Ella and Olen Bumgarner. A lifelong member of Miller's Lutheran Church in Hickory, she was a graduate of St. Stephens High School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College. She managed the North Carolina License Plate Agency in Newton for more than 20 years, and loved to work in her vegetable and flower gardens, as well as baking and helping other people. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dermott Eugene Miller Sr., and her brother, R.A. Bumgarner. She is survived by her son, Dermott Eugene "Gene" Miller Jr. and his wife, Jan, of Alma, Ark.; her daughters, Susan M. Dravecky and husband, Thomas, and Valerie Nicholson and husband, Edward, of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Josh Brooks, Katie Hemel, Lawrie Treakle, Maggie Nicholson, Elizabeth Miller and Dermott Eugene "D.E." Miller III; great-grandchildren, Zachry Brooks, Addison Brooks and Emory Brooks of Knoxville, Tenn.; her brother, Dale Bumgarner and wife, Sarah Ann; her sister, Helen Moser and husband, Carl, of Hickory; as well as many nieces and nephews and loving friends. Many thanks to the people of Continuum Courtyard for their loving care the past three years. A service will be held at Miller's Lutheran Church in Hickory at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010. Receiving of friends will be at the church following the service. The service will be officiated by the Revs. Paul Kanupp and Bob Alle.
