3582. Edna AUSTIN was born on 4 June 1921 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 4 May 2009 at the age of 87 in Lutheran Home West, Hickory, North Carolina. She was buried in Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hickory, North Carolina. Her obituary appeared as follows: HICKORY - Edna Austin Smith, 87, of Hickory, passed away Monday, May 4, 2009, at Lutheran Home-West in Hickory. Mrs. Smith was born June 4, 1921, in Catawba County and was a daughter of the late Clyde D. and Errol Poovey Austin. She was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church, the Women of the Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She retired from Sears. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, A. Russell Smith, and a brother, Herman Austin. Mrs. Smith is survived by her son, Gary Dean Smith and wife, Patricia, of Conover; a daughter, Gloria S. Preslar and husband, Larry, of Columbia, S.C.; a granddaughter, Amy Preslar Seif; a grandson, Todd D. Smith and his wife, Susan S. Smith; a great-granddaughter, Carly Paige Seif; and sisters, Joyce A. Steele and husband, Charles, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Evelyn A. Huffman of Hickory. A service of remembrance will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, with the Rev. David Keck officiating and assisted by Vicar Ingrid Chenoweth. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory. The Smith family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1 to 2:45 p.m., in the church fellowship hall at the church. Pallbearers honoring Mrs. Smith will be Allen Huffman Jr., Phil Barton, Ronnie Barton, Richard Barger, Todd Smith and David Steele. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2780 N. Center St., Hickory, N.C. 28601 or Palliative CareCenter & Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658. Edna AUSTIN and Albert Russell SMITH were married estimated 1938. Albert Russell SMITH, son of Thomas Pinkney SMITH and Claudia Ethel DAVIDSON, was born on 5 August 1918. He died on 14 November 1985 at the age of 67.
