2903. Vernon Eugene LAIL was born on 2 March 1924 in Catawba County, North Carolina. He died on 10 January 2013 at the age of 88 in Frye Regional Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, NC. His obituary appeared as follows: Vernon Eugene Lail Sr., age 88, of Conover, passed away on January 10, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born March 2, 1924 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Henry George Lail and Lula Idella Sipe Lail. Vernon was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. He was a veteran of World War II having served in both the Army and the Air Force. Vernon loved to spend time playing Rook, hunting, and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Sudie Ruth Pope Lail; son, Vernon Eugene Lail Jr.; brothers, Clarence Odell Lail and Troy Henry Lail; sisters, Eva Lail Propst and Beulah Lail Killian. Survivors include his sons, Joe David Lail and wife, Alice, of Conover and Jimmy Dale Lail of Conover; brother, Paul Luther Lail of Conover; sisters, Sadie Lail Arndt of Taylorsville and Eunice Lail Wray of Conover; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott Bollinger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers will be Todd Miller, Eric Miller, Darren Lail, Gene Setzer, David Lail, and Steve Killian; honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Lail and Leroy Lail.

Vernon Eugene LAIL and Sudie "Tine" POPE were married on 21 December 1947. Sudie "Tine" POPE, daughter of B. Leroy POPE and Rena Bell HOLLAR, was born on 11 October 1928 in Catawba County, North Carolina. She died on 8 September 2002 at the age of 73 in Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina. She was buried in Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Conover, North Carolina. Mrs. Sudie “Tine” Pope Lail, age 73, of Herman Sipe Road, Conover, NC, passed away Sunday, September 08, 2002, at the Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born October 11, 1928, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Rena Bell Hollar Pope. She was a homemaker and the former owner of Tiny’s Flower Shop in Conover, NC. She was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Vernon E. Lail, Jr., a brother, Kenneth Pope, and four sisters, Josie Franks, Edith Sigmon, Ester Pope, and Mary Brice Pope.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at 4:00 PM at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover, NC. The Revs. James Zimmerman, Kristine Hill, and Harold Drum will officiate and the burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the fellowship hall of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.
Pallbearers will be Charlie Abernathy, Jr., Jeremy Pope, Johnathan Pope, Perry Pope, Shane Pope, and Carl Pope
